Microsoft’s chair throwing overlord Steve Ballmer has stated in an interview that the company plans a Blu-ray drive as an accessory.
When asked whether the Xbox would be getting Blu-ray, he stated it would be available as an extra:
“Well, I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there — you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.”
This presumably refers to an external optical drive unit connected to the console, an arrangement a number of previous consoles have experimented with, generally with limited success.
Lesser Microsoft flacks refused to confirm the statement, but would not deny it either:
“Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we’re not ready to comment.”
Via GameSpark.
Update:
Microsoft specifically denies the BD drive as a misunderstanding:
“Steve was referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC.
As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts this fall when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies.
With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.”
Reassuring news indeed for all those American households with 100mbps Internet connections…

if they go blu-ray, they need to make their systems more reliable.
Cut the movies talk crap, Gamers. Games are getting bigger and DVD's aren't cutting it no more. Period! Some of the hot titles for next year for both X360/PS3 are bigger them just 1 DVD. FFXIII! One of FFXIII main problems is that is has to be broken down for the X360. Japan release is Dec on PS3 on 1 Blueray. Rage a new game for 2010/11. The makers said they can on use Bluray just so they get all the details for the game. This it only for beginning.
X360 may have started the Next Gen race but it looks like they really falling behind.
x360 $299 + Bluray add-on $100(maybe) = $399
PS3 $299 with Bluray =$299
You do the math with your wallet...
Its worthless as an accessory since games wont come out in blue ray anyway. So no extra content, just a funky add on for watching movies =(
As if the bluray drive would fix the RROD... losers.
They may consider a Blu-ray Disc movie player add-on. Xbox 360 games won't ship in the format, there's no advantage in it whatsoever.
I'm not sure if they should consider the format for the console's successor, maybe they should go with another one that's not essentially owned by Sony, like HVD's or something. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc
Well, this is just futile resistance to the fact that their next console will have to have blu-ray. They won't have the type of success steam has with their consoles.
how predictable
cock goes where?
lol going to try and increase sales by getting something sony made? this makes me LOL!!
Nice info....
wow...so lemme get this straight...they're gonna take the BOGGEST current media format, and throw it in as an afterthought, and it's only gonna be for the pc? further proof that MS are retards. that and who really gives a flying fat crap about instant on streaming? they need to fix the rrod first. then maybe the console would sell to other ppl than americans. and the only reason that most ppl buy it now is brand loyalty and patriotism.i'd switch in a heartbeat if a console was better then the one that i had. it just makes sense to do it that way.
Editor: "Damn, we forgot to whipe this PS3 logo off! Quickly re-assemble the merchandise before it leaks out!"
*cough* xD
Damn! the Blu-ray accesories can solve the problem of Huge games like final fantasy XIII and have the option to give moar life to this console, but the damned chairmans have little vision ! Holy crap!
America, fuck yeah!
Sega CD
Yay, more hardware to buy!
As if the $100 wireless adapter, the Xbox live subscription, the hard drive (I own an old Xbox 360) and Project Natal coming up were not enough.
Honestly Microsoft, instead of releasing all these upgrades, release a new system already!
I wish Sony owned the rights to "Blu-ray"...
Then maybe we could do something like... agreeing to give them rights as long as we don't get a shitty version of Bayonetta.
Maybe after 10 years, James will do some comments about it.
Microfuckers have hated blu-ray ever since they found out it was on the PS3. Now they'll love it and pretend they felt that way all along. Fucking asswipes all of them.
adding something to shit still leaves you with shit.
False alarm, it was a misunderstanding. The guy was talking about PCs.
http://gizmodo.com/5388075/microsoft-says-no-xbox-blu+ray-drives-period-says-ballmer-was-talking-about-pcs [http://gizmodo.com/5388075/microsoft-says-no-xbox-blu ray-drives-period-says-ballmer-was-talking-about-pcs]
Ballmer must be getting popular amongst Microsoft's PR department...
Author you fail, MS officialy denied that there is NO FUCKING Drive for the Failbox, get your facts fucking right.
They denied it sometime after his statement was initially circulated, obnoxious anon.
This much is true
To anon 23-10-2009 12:41:
Have fun downloading a 50GB PS3 game.
Zune Video as an answer to HD. OMG this man is FUNNY!
MegaCD flashbacks...
i know its a big alteration and quite costly, but they should of stopped production on the current model of the 360 roughly a yr or 2 ago when the format war ended with blu-ray being the winner. And started to implement blu-ray into the console and finished the production and be ready to sell them right about now... which is a good counter to the ps3 slim and their price cut.
+1
Back when Sony was the only producer of BR drives and disks ?
Stupid idea if you want to make more money than Sony on the console market.
BR is not a console market .
Hurr durr cannot reed
next version of Xbox Using Blu Ray rather than HD-DVD?
X360 you sore loser XD
I fail to see how MS opting to offering a BD add-on equals them being a sore loser :/
If anything, refusing release a Blu-ray drive when it's in high demands due to them being butthurt would make them a sore loser. Fucking 12 year old anon, go back to bed.
and what are you, an 11 year old anon still suckling from your mothers teet? and blu-ray isn't in "high demand".
Xbox 360 + PS3. What will you get from this combination?
A fine console from Microsoft that has NO GAEMS!!!
PSbox?
More like PS360
Doesn't matter... It's pointless anyway... it probably will even cost more than a PS3...so smart people will juz say, 'fuck it... i ain't gonna get myself ripped off again, im getting a PS3.' As for xbox fanfucks or idiots they'll say hurray im sooooo getting this, see that u sony fanboys??? we have blu-ray too....except we don't have blu-ray games....'
Well, which 1 are ya?
TENGEN!!
TOPPA!!!
GURREN LAGANN!!!!
Giiiiiiiiggggaaaaaaaaaa Ddrrrrriiiiiiiiiiillllll BBbbbbbrreeeeaaaakkkk!
WIN
if this is coming out then xbox owners got screwed the 360 already cost more than ps3 with all the accessories added to it. (and yes i do mean both consoles with all accessories and not the crap like guitars and such)
Well you're stupid of you purchase accessories at the MSRP. Why pay $100 for the wireless adapter if you can get it for $60 someplace else? Shop around for Christs sake.
yeah why buying an wlan adapter for 100$ if you can have it build in. -PS3
why buying an external bluray drive if you can have it build in. -PS3
well see something?
microsoft always used their customers as beta tester so why should they change that now...
Hey that my idea damn T.T
Thanks Mr Bill Gates the legendary Master Thief.
how the fuck old are you to make a stupid joke like that
how the fuck old are you to understand this is a joke ? stupid anon 23-10-2009 02:32
More like Master Chief am i rite ?
I wouldn't know, as I've never seen him cook.
Get it?
Pwned... hard...
xD
Innovation cannot be owned, it becomes widely adopted/available (interpret loosely). Not to mention blurays dev was being carried by MULTIPLE companies.
Sony has no say in who can use the blu ray format. I laugh everytime I read a comment that even remotely suggests that they do or that some1 is "stealing" a format medium.
I doubt many people will bother to buy it, an external blue ray drive is no different to just buying a seperate blue ray player and I doubt MS will have the best or the fastest reading blue ray player (or best price for that matter). Either way it's not going to effect the games so it's just for HD movie lovers really who probably would just buy a PS3 since it has no games and lots of blue ray lol.
It's either stupidity or blindness that could cause you to think the PS3 has no games. That statement might have been somewhat true in 2006 and even early 2007 to be generous, but things have changed. It's annoying to see the same tired statement being repeated time and time again simply out of habit.
RRRRRAAAAGGGGEEEE my PS3 fanboy!!
Yeah yeah cos when PS3 got Uncharted (which I'm not into myself actually) and demons souls suddenly everything changed and it went from no games to millions.
I'm not actually a fanboy but I like to annoy the people on this site since they're mostly PS3 fanboys that insult the 360 anyway so why not insult there console back for fun?
troll? still dont get why they dont include ratchet and clank mgs4 and god of war3. and you why i only said 3 games cuz they are all different genres of games. ahem one game for the 360 halo. all are the same shooters
If it's like everything else Microsoft makes, expect it to break within 3 years.
Maybne in yours deformed hands ;]
my earz fell down wfrom your horriple speakings....
"just buy a PS3 since it has no games and lots of blue ray lol"
360 fanboy spotted.
Then it's possible that the xbox will have blu ray games made for it in the future.
Microsoft would probably come out with an entirely new console in order play Blu-ray games. But that may only happen once sales/popularity for the 360 really start to die with no chance of recovery.
No it's not. For the same reason Xbox Games were released on DVD and not HD-DVD while HD-DVD was still in the race.
Oh the irony...
The irony of the winning format of a format war being adopted? Yeaaaah. Not really ironic at all but it's ironic you think your pointing out irony when your really not.
Oh the tautology...
Board of Directors
The Blu-ray Disc Association website describes the role of the Board of Directors as follows:
Companies participating in the Board of Directors are active participants of the format creation and key BDA activities. They are selected from the Contributors by election. The board sets an overall strategy and approves key issues. A board member can participate in all activities and attend all meetings. The Blu-ray Disc Founder companies will make up the initial Board of Directors. Annual fee: $ 50,000
Please for that Annual fee you too can join the board. The board is they just to be on the "IN" tech. Like MP3's. None of the Music companies own the rights to it but they use it anyway as a online format. It's the "IN" tech.
Sony still gonna get paid from MS.
An additional drive won't make that much of a difference. M$ has to release a new xBox with internal BluRay that can do FullHD.
If it's compatible with the old one that thing sure would sell. The PS3 would have serious problems with such a competitor...
The Blue-ray Association owns the Blu-ray standard and not only is Microsoft a member of this group they are Directors of the group (along with 19 other companies including sony)
Sony owns the bluray format so if Microsoft uses it they will have too pay royaltys to sony for it.
they should blu ray n64
OutStanding! Rock it ON!
We all can play GoldenEyes again in glorious 720p by putting that 2 Megabit game into a TWENTY-FIVE GIG disc!!!
Fuck! We can have the ENTIRE library on oONE disc!
Let go anon, the '64 is so '90s.
what's wrong with playing the entire console's library in a single disc, you won't have to stand up to change the disc.... harhar...
LULZ
If they are going to get Blue-Ray for 360, they will need moar Developers, Developers, Developers, Developers.
Replying here just so it can be seen..
http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/10/22/we-have-no-plans-for-blu-ray-on-xbox-360.aspx
I
LOVE
THIS
POST YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHH
they think adding crap onto failure would help sell? they need to focus on next gen with extensive testing to make sure theres no RROD. but i guess they want to strangle the cat until its finally dead.
nah, it's more like an alternative to those who already have an 360, but want to watch blue-ray. But I'll be laughing at microsoft's ass when they price it over 150 dollars, cause might as well buy a ps3 at that price, and also with just low end blue-ray players going at 100 dollars these days, they are most likely bound to fail. again.
No reason for you anymore. (Puts Anon :01 in trash can)
No reason for ps3 anymore. (Puts ps3 in trash can)
the reason i dun but ps3 cuz there's no fake game available yet... so this is not a good idea...
what's so funny? they did the same thing with HD DVD, that went down, makes good enough sense that they'd go to the new format
sure did take them a while though
its a sony?
It's a Microshit.
an example of people who sleep in class. doesn't know differences of micrometer and nanometer. i guess he doesn't even know picometer too
that must be really small sh!t, 1 nanometer?
I still mourn the HD-DVD which had a more open view on the whole media than Bluray.
BluRay is more than just movies, and all the extra features HDDVD had are now incorporated in bluray.
HD DVD had some shitty codec anyway, so why do you care?
Too bad the HDDVD vs. Bluray war was another form of the Beta vs. VHS war.
Nope.
Like the "lesser Microsoft flack" said, they'll continue to mainly advertise streaming video services.
HD-DVD had 30 GB (dual layer)while sony had Blu-Ray Disk had 50 GB (dual-layer)
Forget the past in this debate. As they both stand currently, Blu Ray is vastly superior. This kind of thing is part of Sony's 10-year life cycle.
Think about it. Sony got a few years of the Blu Ray fan base(however small it is) ahead of time while Microsoft was Jizzing itself over Halo releases. Now, Microsoft is going to advertise Blu Ray like total hypocrites.
HDDVD and Blu-Ray use the same codec, dumbass. They both use h.264. BluRay started out with the shitty VC-1 codec.
Actually, a lot of early blu-ray discs used MPEG-2, so it's no wonder they looked like shit. I don't know how much VC-1 is used, but i hope it isn't, to be honest.
hello children :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_high_definition_optical_disc_formats
with digital distribution, there are fewer overheads to consider eg: where to store thousands of discs post manufacture as compared to storage of a single file on a computer.
add to the equation the cost of producing said discs and the cost of employing all the people involved in their production compared to just the creator/s of the original file and you see that the latter doesn't have quite as high a production and storage cost, meaning the marketing of such material can be much cheaper, maybe as low as a third or possibly a quarter of what it costs for a film today.
with the cost of films being that low, the end consummer really has to look at the cost of pirating such material, what would be the point, if everyone could afford to download it in the first place...
In my estimation the BlueRay vs. HD-DVD format war was very insignificant. With Technology like High Speed internet connections and large amounts of digital Storage Space both widely available and cheap. The only reason Online Distribution hasn't taken off is because these companies want to sell me a Stupid piece of plastic that takes up space in my living room.
Yeah, Digital Distribution FTW. Then Piracy is gonna take off thanks to it.
VC-1 was the whore's ass in codecs that has only redeemed itself on the Blu-ray by companies willing to dump tons more data into the discs to equal the beauty of AVC.
Warners played both sides during the "war" and released all of its films thru VC-1 and I still think they've been fucking up every one they still release to this day now. The stand alone 'The Matrix' was nice to an extent.. but still.
Same shit with the battle between dolby digital and DTS of which dolby had to cook up another format called "dolby digital" to finally equal the basic DTS. I love DTS and some of the games I've played do also like Uncharted 1 & 2 and Ninja Gaiden (PS3).
Owned.
