Japanese RPG fans quizzed about their favourite RPG titles have given a fair acquittal of their tastes, even if the list is predictably heavy on Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy at the expense of more original titles…

anyone who thought FFVIII was terrific has to have been a young kid when they played the game. any person with a shred of discernment or even borderline maturity recognized that game as totally broken, with slovenly storytelling, insufferable characters, and a nonsense plot.

I'd expect at least ONE 'Mother' game in there. And, come on, people, Phantasy Star didn't suck THAT much! Heck, one of the Online versions deserves a spot, at the very least.
i tend to question those who swear the SNES FFs had far superior storytelling. they must have been really young and/or lack any ability to judge writing if they think that the storytelling has gotten more slovenly, more insufferable, and more nonsensical.
though really it usually comes down to blind sakaguchi love and attempt to sound oldschool hardcore.
and before you even try, yes i am old enough to have played the older FFs, i'm old enough to have played a lot of RPGs that predated the FFs as contrary to popular younger gamer belief rpgs aren't japanese in origin and Sakaguchi didn't create jrpgs. i'm just old enough to not get sucked into blind nostalgia worship.
Persona 4 was most certainly awesome, but I didn't expect it to get fourth place. Kudos to Atlus.
Maybe Chrono Trigger could've been a bit higher on the list. While I'm at it, I will give Chrono Cross an honorable mention.

I've been with FF since the original on the NES, but 10? Really? Lame characters + lame plot + lame villain + the beginning of the end of Nobuo's involvement = success, apparently. There are much better entries in the FF series, let alone rpgs as a whole =/

I do hate you now. That game was crap. FF VIII should be on the list. Although I do understand why X is there. It's the second most selling FF game after 7 and has the best FF stort IMHO.
FFX gets no.1 because most of the voters are newfags to the rpg genre, there are many titles missing from the list; namely xenogears and legend of the dragoon. Many nubs compare graphics and sound with older games, when really you should only compare the story/gameplay.
i believe that ffviii was one of the most underrated games. i think it should be on the list within the top 5.

Of course, star ocean should be there as well. About the tales of saga...they are good, but not that good. And onitke...how can yo say you liked X-2 better than X, that game was an insult for the FF saga, it wasn't even made by square enix ¬¬
There will always be dispute in which one is the best Final Fantasy. in the end it's a matter of preference. You can't tell other people what they should think is the best.

FF as a series sucks. The ONLY games that were really above average in that series were VI (even that's pushing it) and IX. VII was mediocre at best, what with it's disjointed, poorly thought out story line that barely surpasses your typical fanfic in terms of depth, and X easily had the stupidest plot twist on this side of SOTET (LOL SIN IS MY DAD AND I'M NOT REAL!). If it wasn't for rabid fanboyism, the FF series would have been dead (like it should have been) a long time ago.

FF8 was an incredible piece of technology. Everything up until disk 4 was incredible and innovative for its time as far as I'm concerned. I've heard too many people whine about the draw system to believe they have anything worth saying about 8 without it being shallow and useless. I do not believe it should be #1, however it definitely deserves a place in the teens at the very least.
FF8 was beautifully put together, with the exception of the a-bit-too-convenient-wrap-up in disk 4 and horrendous final villain. Even that was cool in its own way, but a tad cheesy.

You didn't need fancy graphics and deep character customization back then... all you needed was quests, a decent group of characters with skills which complimented each other, and location, location, location.

True. It's also pretty nonsensical to say Game A is better than Game B. for example, I'd say Suikoden II has one of the best storylines in console RPGs ever, same with Xenogears, which at that time was really something different, but I enjoyed the gameplay say in FFX more (which HAS the best storytelling in all FF-games so far...and damn I almost cried in one scene, but I did that in FFVI too. So...hm...). So which game is better?

i only played 30 hours but,imho , ff8 has the most shallow characters (not to mention stupid), the most bland "hero" and the worst combat system ever (G-forces can do all the work by themselves without you taking risk or caring about). oh, I almost forgot the boooooring storyline.
The best part was the card game. it was rather good, and i know several people who explored most ff8 without really progressing in the "story" just to play it. In the end, it looks more like ff8 being a bonus game for the card game :)

This I can't understand... it really was an exceptional game. I mean... there really is nothing bad about it, and plenty that is quite great about it. I mean objectively it may not be the best, but I'd bet it was a contender for the list. The ones mentioned in these posts were all runners-up more than likely.
It was a 2006 Famitsu reader poll for top 100 games. You really won't expect western gamers to understand a JP ranking. There's a lot of JP games they've never played, and they'll end up whining with things like "Waah, where's my Halo?". A game called Machi(1998) was #5, and it got a TV series because of its reception. A related game to it released this generation is called 428, which got a perfect review in Famitsu. Type-Moon liked it enough to create Canaan.
That only proves that sometimes Japan fails incredibly hard.
Fallout 3 in the list is another proof of that.

FF8 is a terrible game with plot holes you could ride a fucking tank through. Stupid game design, stupid tutorials, a magic system that could only be more retarded if you also had to collect items through it as well, and shot down what before hand had been a very good series of games to me. The spoony experiment has the rest of my thoughts on the retardation of FF8.
One last thing. There was a keycard, for a missle base, quarter way across the world, in a truck, at a prison. Need I comment any more on the retardation? Christ.

With mods I would agree but without mods Fallout 3 is superior to Oblivion. When Fallout 3 modding gets further along I may change my mind but that is how it stands now.

I guess RPG fans don't know good shit when the see it. Kingdom Hearts II is, easily, THE WORST RPG I HAVE EVER PLAYED. Nothing but completely barren worlds, completely redundant characters, and completely broken combat that makes everything but just spamming your regular attack redundant. All Kingdom Hearts II had going for it is pretty graphics and cameo fan-service - and I guess that's all an RPG needs if it can get the number 5 spot on the Top 10 RPGs.

I hope you all realise this is RPG and not MMORPG or any RPG with some sort of online function for that matter and also this list is from japan we all know each market has different tastes especially the pig headed americans who wouldn't know a games potential if it walked up to them and shot them in the groin.
If the people who took this poll knew a good game from complete tripe, then Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Skies of Arcadia, Breath of Fire II & III, Mother 2 and Final Fantasy IV would be up there.
But they aren't. Which shows that the people who took this poll are complete morons who are easily swayed by pretty graphics, familiar stories/characters, and lackluster gameplay.

The last real loli as far as I can recall in FF was Relm in FFVI back on the SNES, they never made it to 3D... Perhaps that's a good thing. Garnet in IX was 16, despite the graphics looking young. The lack of Disgaea is surprising. I love Nippon Ichi's games. As for FF games, X was beautiful, but a combination of Tidus, Blitzball, and the impossability of the ultimate weapon quests and overall crappiness of every single side mission killed the gaming experience for me. I never got into FFVII either. For me, VIII was my FF of choice. I loved pretty much every second of that game until the game had a complete meltdown in its final act, where the story ceased to exist. Though, the extra quests, everything having to do with Ragnarok (the ship), and the awesome card game Tripple Triad made this game a joy (outweighing the tediousness of the draw system to horde 100 of every single spell).
I'm really bummed out no one remembers Xenogears. That game was mindblowing (not to mention hard as @#$%!).
How on EARTH did Fallout 3 make this list? I mean seriously as far as Fallouts go Fallout 2 was MUUUCH better story wise and it was also a lot more mature...Fallout 3 was conservative in retrospect until the modders arrived.

I mostly agree with the list, despite the lack of Xeno...Disappointing to see FF7 in 3rd since it was a shitty game, with a cruddy cast; a tranny, prostitute, cool guy wannabe, who doesn't know who the hell he is (Cloud); a giant breasted girl (Tifa........WIN!), a cat on a doll, a talking dog (Scooby Doo Wtf?!), a black guy (Mr.T except more uneducated), and a cleric girl who's death wasn't even that major because anyone can heal (Aerith/Aeris). In fact, the only good thing about her, is the fact that there is a website dedicated to her consisting of H-images (is this why people like her?!). It was a shitty rpg, and Xenogears deserves it's place.

One thing would have made this list reputable: a "one game per franchise" rule. The five spots taken by Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest would have been reduced to two and the list could have contained three more games that deserve a spot in such a list, whatever they may be and wherever they would have ended up.

No FFTactics? It has a very epic plot. Nice graphics(at that time), though younger players won't understand the plot. The downside is Square made so many imbalances in the game like Orlandu, Calculator Job, Bewoulf, etc., which made the game a piece of cake.
