Microsoft: “We Expect the PS3 to Outsell Us”

xbox360-arima-senne-by-kashiwamochi-yomogi.jpg

Microsoft has admitted the PS3 looks set to outsell the Xbox 360 even in its US stronghold, but defiantly maintains that the Xbox’s annual sales will still exceed those of the PS3, and that the Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3 “for this entire generation.”

Microsoft’s top flack Aaron Greenberg holds forth yet again on why Sony is doomed:

“I can tell you to that when NPD releases September sales… we fully expect PlayStation 3 will come in as the console with the most units sold for the month.

This is frankly not a real surprise to us or the analysts that follow this industry, as it is typical to see a short term bump following the introduction of new hardware and pricing into the marketplace.

What I can tell you is we remain confident that Xbox 360 will not only outsell PS3 for the full calendar year, but for this entire generation.

It is similar to a game of baseball, it is not about just winning one inning, but instead being able to win the game by consistently delivering across all nine innings.”

Its amazing how many people still think that the 360 has a 54% failure rate. The 54% rate was based on a skewed survey of readers of ONE website. While the original 360 admittedly has a ridulously high failure rate, its undergone 2 chipset revisions since then. The current jasper chip used in the 360 has a 4% failure rate. Which is comparable to the current PS3s 10% failure rate.

    tl;dr
The current 360 with the jasper chipset actually has a lower(4%) failure rate than the PS3(10%)

Many (not all) of my electronics are Sony and they don't fail. Same goes for friends and family that own Sony products. Microsoft comps on the other hand have failed me time and time again.

All the 360 is; is a slim desktop tower. Any game that comes out on the PC shows up on the 360 and visa averse.

    Comment by Anonymous
    20:43 19/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Whoever posted this article did so in A VERY MISLEADING way and, obviously is biased towards the PS3(as are most articles reagarding the 360/PS3 on this site. The 360 will outsell the PS3 this generation(especially when the (Project Natal equipped 360's and 360 ad-ons are released next year/it's already an industry consensus). Not to take away from Sony or the PS3 which imo single handedly turned their situation around 360 degrees(no pun)when they designed and released the slim. The original PS3 was an ugly/clunky dust/fingerprint magnet...not so anymore, and that's part of the reason why PS3 sales have increased so much.

MS' Project Natal is going to turn the way we play games on it's ear, and bring true interactivity to gaming(without controlers!).Sony and Nintendo's similar projects are said to not even come close in comparison. We'll find out next year. For all we know if Sony and MS don't market/price their things the correct way, we could easily see Nintendo right back at #1.Tough doubtful, things could end up going that way.

I'm not sure this constitutes your article title, though it certainly grabs attention. It's fairly obvious that the Slim's surge in sales will bring the system a strong short-term boost, especially at a time when there's nothing overly exciting for the Xbox coming out. $300 blu-ray player is nothing to sneeze at!

PS3 is currently exulting from the love of Uncharted 2, Demon Souls, and the ever looming God of War 2, whereas Xbox has ODST. Everything else worth interest is a multi-platform title, so there's obvious quite a skew there.

Though now that I think of it, what exclusive titles is Xbox looking forward to these days? I can't seem to think of many, but I'm sure there's some?

Games are a selling point, which the 360 has shown numerous times, though not all the time, is the better version than the PS3. But then again, this is due to developers being lazy fucks, developing on the 360 first then throwing a shit port to the PS3.
The thing that has me wanting a PS3 is bluray, though not until I get a new HD TV, and Team ICO's new game. I'm gonna go ahead and blame developers for not getting me to buy a PS3 faster.

Wouldn't it be, perhaps, that 360 hardware sales numbers actually aren't that much affected by defective and refurbished consoles, and that PS3 hardware sales are actually artificially inflated by those who only buy it for playing movies, uh??

Give this "astounding" "revelation" some time to sink in...

Frankly it is near impossible for sony to catch up when comparing sales FOR THE ENTIRE GEN

360 had a year headstart and PS3 had a extremely slow start with inferior ports and good exclusives only coming in 2 years after release.

even with 2009 and 2010 in sonys hands the gap is simply too big for sony to catchup.

who cares about sales, like you said x360 have headstart. i admit m$ success in deceiving gamers and even up to make them a loyalist contracted extended to 3 years warranty. with that 54% failure rate, from half of it may have rebuy it again, and again, and again, and that what boosting x360 sales.

and also about pirated games. this what boosting x360 console sales. many people attracted by cheap pirated games.

what matter is quality. ps3 win that. most people don't need to buy it again and again like x360.

not if you actually do the math.
sony's at 25 mil sold to customers (which is what sony tracks).
the 360 is at 32 mill SHIPPED (which is what MS tracks). most analysts agree the 360 is more realistically only at a little over 30 mil actual sold through because obviously the 360 isn't sold out, so a chunk of that shipped number includes the units sitting on store shelves around the world.

that means the 360's lead worldwide sits at only about 5 mil at this point. meaning that the 360s vaunted 1 year head start, that you yourself point out, has already been shrunk from 10 mil units to half (the aforementioned 5 mil).
MS hasn't been sitting comfortably with its lead, its lead has consistently shrunk over the past 3 years.

if Sony were to outsell MS by ~3 mil each over the next 2 years. that 1 year head start has already gone poof and Sony takes the lead.

is outselling the 360 by ~3 mil each over the next 2 years easy? no its not.
i will grant you it would require 2 bad years for MS (which at this point, will probably rest on the reception of NATAL since MS has at this point abandoned their strategy of securing exclusives in the traditional sense and placed all their eggs in NATAL's invisible virtual basket, and hoping its success spurs more NATAL-based exclusives), and 2 good (though obviously this will vary depending on how poorly MS does) years for Sony.
hard yes, but it is impossible? even near impossible? not really. outselling one another by 3 mil is large but not THAT large of a margin, and like i pointed out, depending on how NATAL actually pans out for MS, it could even shift well into the plausible range.

Even though I love my 360 I honestly have to agree, since Microshaft are money whores and are going to do whatever they can to make more, even if it means leaving a defect in so they can charge for repairs, or even get another sale.

And even IF they removed the RROD or even improved the 360, it doesn't mean a new thing won't come along to effect the new batch. Just like the E74 error with the jasper models.

Microshaft is "FAR" too worried about sales and console install base than they are about actually fixing a problem that effects millions...

Its sad how they don't actually care about their consumers.

    Comment by ChaosAngelZero
    08:41 19/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Microsoft were worried to rush the 360's launch so as to not get steamrolled by the PS3's mindless hype machine (if you don't agree with this description of pre-E3' 06 expectatives towards the system, then you either are a Sony fanboy or you just don't care all that much about new systems coverage, if you are of the latter category then I somewhat envy you) and get a small advantage for the hard times to come if they wanted their system to actually move form the PlayStation brand's shadow.

And, after many court cases, they realized they'd actually lose money if they didn't "care about their consumers" (for once, at least), then the RRoD-specific three year warranty extension was announced.

Pure business logic, really. And a big fucking blunder that's already been solved, so it would be wise, not to mention mature, to just shut up about it since it's no longer relevant plzkthx.

They don't charge a thing for RROD repairs. Not even a cent for shipping.

It's TYPICAL how they (and many other companies) "don't actually care about their customers."

Hey dumbass, since when do companies care about their customers? They care about your money, that goes for all of them out there.

If we get proof of that, I might actually buy one.

That isn't true since I have one of the newer ones and my first one failed in less than a month. I have been afraid that this one is going to die also so have been limiting my time on it.

Oh of course, once Sony rolls out the non disk-based emulator for the PS3s without backwards compatibility, it's okay for them to charge us for games we already have, right?

And don't say "But you don't know!" If you honestly believe Sony won't jump at the chance you make you pay for a digital version of a game you already own, get your head examined.

$ony philosophy "If they already own it, let them buy it again."

What's sad is that They're not mentioning the fact that the 360 had the same price drop. Theoretically, the 360 should've done much better than it did last month.

BTW, that guy should think twice about taking on a Japanese company in a game of Baseball Metaphors.

What? That they expected ps3 to have a sales jump once the price was lowered?

Who cares about a sales jump then. What will matter is what the sustained performance of the ps3 is over multiple months/years. I'm sure M$ isn't planning to sit back and do nothing at all if ps3 continues to outsell them over an extended period (more than just a few months)

reason why PS3 did not sell is because it's not piratable.

    pirate rules XBOX.

dun forget X-Box 360 can play self-burned game, it might be the reason why X-Box 360 can keep on selling out while PS3 sale drop & stop, cuz people don't want to spend too much money on Real Blue Ray Disc Game for PS3...
I'm waiting for Mega Man X9, if it release for PS3 only then I'll buy PS3, otherwise X-Box 360 or Wii would be cheaper choices...
