Yes, because otherwise the "tattoos" would wash off. Well, srsly, is there any actual evidence that these aren't body painting? Irezumi as I understand it is incredibly painful because it's done with small chisels instead of needles, and some of the colors are quite toxic so the tattoo has do be done gradually.
today's inks are not toxic. however a tattoo is like an open wound and must be taken care of like an open wound. If the artist does too much at one time the one being tattooed can go into shock as if they had been skinned and it hurts. That is why they do it in stages.
You never heard of the rule that bans Irezumi'd people from onsens, did you?

Atleast she has a good body, unlike some girls with these kinds of tattoos I've seen.

Of course, she does. She can't even go to onsen anymore. I was thinking about a tatto yrs ago, but for the love of onsen/sentou, I gave up the idea. She is not pretty to begin with anyway, who needs a big tatto like that if she has the looks or body of a gravue idol ? I wonder maybe it is even tough for her to find a normal job too.

My tattoos are 28 years old and they are holding up fine. They still look like they did when they healed up 28 years ago.
