“Anime, Manga & Games are Killing Japan”

A BBC journalist opining on why Japan is a doomed nation has suggested that Japanese men who retreat from the real world into anime and game fantasies are the reason the nation faces a demographic death spiral.
His screed runs along these lines:
Imagine a country that knows it is shrinking. A country that knows it is ageing more rapidly than any other major industrialised nation on earth. Which has the highest proportion in the world of people over the age of 65, and the lowest ratio of under 15s. That country is Japan.
As I reported on Wednesday, on current trends, the population of Japan will have halved by the end of the century.
It is, literally, a country that is slowly dying.
According to one United Nations estimate, it’ll need to import 17 million foreign workers over the next 40 years, just to keep its economy afloat and provide enough carers to look after the elderly. (By 2050, there will be more than a million Japanese over the age of 100.)
I’m no social psychologist, so I wouldn’t dare to come up with an explanation for why Japanese couples aren’t having enough babies.
But one theory is that Japanese women are increasingly reluctant to marry, because they think Japanese men have shown themselves unable to adapt to the needs of a new, more flexible society – and have retreated into a fantasy world of comics, video games and animated pornography where they feel less threatened.
Of course, anyone capable of actually reading what the Japanese are saying and not merely what people are saying about the Japanese might come to very different conclusions about the causes of the schism between the sexes in Japan.
2ch’s commentary provides the usual scathing insights:

I think it's due to the women having unrealistic standards and not men preferring anime. Men are just forced to cope with the situation by relying on fantasy. Most men would gladly give up anime for a real woman.

A problem of true otaku and hikkikomori is the inability to function properly in society and in social networks. Thus, we get the anime indulged or the reclusive. For these people, the true otaku, or the highly fanatical few, are truly those unable to simply talk and associate freely with women. Due to asian (japanese culture especially), this is a growing trend, as more and more people join and enlarge this group of social misfits, who cannot adapt properly into society and thus thrive with a woman etc. etc.
Obviously, there are exceptions as there are many fans (not otaku), who delve once and awhile into the anime world, but often lead very normal lives and are able to associate well with the opposite sex. Japan's primary (as well as Korea and other asian states primarily), problem is that this group of "otaku and hikkokomori" is growing ever larger as reality becomes bleaker and bleaker for the average person. Life and society is becoming harder to live in, and for those who could barely interact in society as it was before, are giving up and entering further into reclusion and fanatic interests.
Yes, women's high expectations are a part of this, but its also many factors that all include, the dimishing importance of family (exemplified by the ages at which people marry now, [heavily getting higher for urban asian cities], which is now getting close to 30 and higher), the fact that the reclusive otaku and hikkokomori group is appealing as it is an escape from the reality of world problems, social life becoming harder to assimilate into, tougher job markets each year, limited 'prestigious' universities, growing sources of entertainment, and so many more factors. All anthropologists are studying these cases in the example of Japan's growing and coming crisis, but it is not a case limited to just Japan; Asia, especially Korea is also on the decline of social networkings, though it is far less severe than that of Japan.
These are the reasons and explanations that I currently view and take hold of. I am moving closer and closer to the reclusive life myself, though college keeps me going out to classes. To be a true "otaku", means to be very poor because everything I buy is anime/proto culture related.

Guys don't have high standards. Most would take anyone who isn't psychotic and isn't obese. When no one satisfies these extremely unselective criteria, there's no point in concerning oneself with real women anymore.
The women's standards are realistic in the sense that there are people meeting those standards. They are unrealistic in the sense that for all the women possessing a certain standard X, the number of men satisfying X is a tiny fraction of the women wanting X. So you end up with alpha males who can choose pretty much anyone and women taking their turns with them.
These men then turn away average looking women because they get all the pussy they can handle. Then women bitch that men's standards are too high because they can't get these alpha males. If someone has managed to find a partner, then his/her standard is realistic pretty much by definition.

It's pretty obvious why Japan has its demographics this way. It was first more or less forced to "Modernize" after the war. The Japanese male lived a life of pure work, but at least brought home the bacon while the woman watched the home and the kids studied like mad. This created a culture of "Socially Autistic" people, chiefly the males. It worked for the next generation, but the one after that faced economic problems and greater roles for women. It was no longer the "Study like mad, get into the best college you can, then you'll find a lifetime job and either chase a lady or have your parents choose one for you." It was "Study, study, study, but still have trouble finding a job, and have women ignore you for 'outlaw' types you were told to never be like and...."
They could turn this around very quickly. In their culture the "Rich Elite" are quite different from AmeriKKKa's. For the sake of their country's long-term future they WOULD work with the government to re-arrange their culture.
1. Make high paying jobs plentiful again along with lifetime commitment for loyal workers.
2. Give incentives for starting families.
3. Modify or introduce laws that give the "Man of the House" default power. As long as she's a good wife, in practice the woman will be still the master of the house while the guy works. However if she starts cheating or leaves, she leaves with the clothes on her back. The "Outlaw" types will have far less appeal, and vice versa, if she can't suck a man's labors and take his kids to use as blackmail.
4. Give people some time off. Nothing unreasonable, but they need time to socialize. They've got a "Culture of Nerds" far worse than even AmeriKKKa. All work and no play and all that.
I found this kinda reasonable. However, point number 3 will very easily rile up the feathers of women's rights activists, as well as put Japan in a bad position in a world advocating women's rights, no matter how flawed it might seem.
And point 1 is actually difficult to achieve seeing that the availability of jobs is dependent on infrastructure, resources and population. Japan is a small country and they will be starved for space to build yet another factory or office. And then there's the matter of resources. They will have the import more from the neighbouring countries and drive up expenses. And finally, there's the population issue. We all know just how overpopulated Japan is, and that will mean there is a need to produce hell alot more jobs, possibly more than can be supported by the local businesses.
It might actually do much better to send some of the more 'loyal' workers overseas to take positions of higher rank to make space for the local workforce to move in and fill in the gap. However, this ideal might be a little too simplistic.
