Yes, Japan took Chinese writing and assimilated large portion of it's culture, but after taking the best that Chinese culture had to offer Japan built on it and surpassed China in every way possible. Who is to blame? China and its people. Instead of looking what the other side is doing and nagging endlessly about WWII atrocities(which were terrible and commited by Japan) you should look to yourselves and better your own country, and after that no westerner will think that Chinese culture and way of life is, in fact, Japanese. Stop living in the past and move forward. Japan did it and look where that brough them, second largest economy of the world. Actually I now a lot about Asia, far more than you do obviously. I've been to Beijing and Tokyo, and have to say that latter is far more advanced than the former. Super power you say? What kind of super power? I know some Chinese who emigrated to my country, and the way they are telling it, poverty is hitting large portion of Chinese population. Not to mention lack of freedom and such tinsie little things. Maybe China has nukes and a large army but history will tell that Chinese army suck big time. I'm drawing conclusion from what I've seen on the ground, and that is: Japan is far more developed and advanced country than China.

You're a liar. If you have been to Beijing and Tokyo within the past 5 years, you would know that neither of the vast cities are "far more advanced" than the other. The only credit I'll give is that people in Tokyo (and Japan by extension) are generally less likely to steal your shit, and the streets are cleaner.
As for poverty and freedom, talk to any Chinese citizen and they will tell you that over the past decade the government has significantly lightened their grip. While censorship still exists, particularly with regards to the internet, you never see fabricated news broadcasts anymore and foreign media is only prohibited with politically sensitive issues (i.e., Tibet) are the subject. Poverty is also relatively stable, as China isn't suffering from the recession as much as most other countries.

Actually I spoke to them in Kunming, the provincial capital of the poorest province even after Tibet: Yunnan.

If you have ever been to a modernized Chinese city, which I'm sure the majority of people here have not, then you would know that anti-Japanese sentiment is nearly non-existent.
In Shanghai, for example, there are tons of office buildings owned by Japanese companies, particularly automobile related ones like Yokohama, Suzuki, Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi. The streets are also lined with various Japanese massage parlors and restaurants, all of which appear quite successful.
Hell, there's even a large dedicated store that sells nothing but anime and video game apparel (half of which are bootlegged - but the employees and managers generally disclose the fact if you ask). On that note, the whole "anime is banned" thing is baseless and inaccurate, as the availability of anime goes well beyond what's on broadcast TV.
Similarly, several landmarks in China - particularly those with historic significance such as palaces and temples - gain a lot of traffic from Japanese tourists. Because believe it or not, most Japanese don't have the same disdain towards other ethnic groups as the people here, and they're generally humble enough to believe that they aren't the center of the universe.
In the end it's all political, and if you think that Imperial Japan didn't commit war crimes against the Japanese themselves, I pity your naivete. Perhaps a popular example is the suicide order controversy during the Battle of Okinawa, which the government has been fervently trying to paint over.

People who like China or Japan, that's their own opinion, like I'm a Chinese but not from China, and I don't like China, including the mainland Chinese, low level, often with strange act which gives bad name to "all" Chinese. I prefer to spend my holidays in a safe, clean(food/street/hospital), politic stable, technology advance country which is Japan. The Japanese had their wrong doings in WW2 and their government is still not educating their citizens about the truth. But that part doesn't affect me as a tourist or consumer, their service and products is trust worthy. Chinese goverment in a way is even worst than Japanese govt. The Japanese govt hides the history, but the Chinese govt using every possible way to stop Taiwan from being recognized, neglecting basic health care/education but rather spend $ on glamous stuff like spaceship and Olympics, try so hard to unify Taiwan, what for ? You can't even properly manage your own big piece of land ! Your food are unreliable, often has industrial material inside, that means citizen's right/wrong mentality is zero, govt has no system. When Disneyland was first opened in Hong Kong, long line up at the washroom, the mainland Chinese parents let their kids pee in the drinking fountain! Ha, I can't think of Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese would do something like that ! And what else ? Oh, rural village people go to big city to sell their blood or organ ? What's the govt doing ? You want people to respect you as big country, start from basic like education first, your citizens are spreading bad reputations around the world while you busy thinking of going to the moon or another Olympic !

China has surpassed Japan after the economic bubble in the 80's and are steadily increasing their hard and soft power and influence in the region. While Japan's economy stagnates and the demography cripples, China expieriences its gigantic boom.
China's economic reforms has brought the country from total destruction and feudalism in only 30 years (without the help of anyone in contrast to Japan) to a nuclear armed world power that even the mighty US fears.
And because all this is a heavy blow to Japanese sense of superiority towards the Chinese, they are starting to post 'news' of China to prove that China is a shithole and that they will remain always the leading nation of Asia. Which is a big pile of bullshit, since their economy and their corruption-ridden politics are no match to the deadly efficiency of Chinese authoritarism.
Furthermore the fact that the newly elected DPJ want to become closer to China and distances itself from the US, also speaks a clear message: Japan acknowledges that their time is finally over and succumbs to their new Chinese Overlords as a mere province.
