When confronted about its mockery of the remaining Haruhi fanbase with the four disc Endless Eight DVD release, even Kadokawa itself can only say “it would be nice if they sell.”

Their animation department responds to enquiries thus:

“Even in the company hardly anyone knows why it took eight repeated episodes spread across 4 DVDs with two episodes each in order to unravel the mystery thoroughly. We are aware of the fan reaction, but…”

When asked directly about whether they think these tactics will result in sales at the level of the first season, even Kadokawa is less than enthusiastic:

“Well… All that can be said is that it would be nice if they sell, wouldn’t it?”

this too, is a troll. they're trying to make otaku feel sorry for them, pitifully saying "It would be nice if they'd sell". the question is, who's dumb enough to fall for it?

positive or negative, publicity is publicity. how many of you "watched" all 8 episodes. i'm not talking about from second 1 to second n, i'm talking about skipping, fast forwarding(que?), or whatever you do with anime episodes. people talk about it, peole talk to people who talk about it(includes all means of communication). how many people you know actually quit watching haruhi s2 after endlesslesslesslessless88888888 and never come back? it "is" a ballsy move, haruhi now is also known as the anime with exactly(or not really) same episodes in addition to what other reputation it has. in the future if any other anime series tries to do the same thing(showing same story/episode multiple times) people will say haruhi/kyoto animation has done it.

    tldr version: it is working

What I'm afraid of is, that they are not making many new episodes in se2. Season 1 hat just 13 episodes. We are now at ep 13, I hope they will at least make 20 episodes to compensate damn endless 8, to have at least 13 new episodes.

According to my Mediafire download statistics, the Endless Eight episodes are much more popular than Sighs.

    Take that as you will.

    21:32 09/09/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

    There are quite a lot of reasons for that;

    1. People were just curious to watch them.
    2. Just download/collecting episodes..
    3. Die hard fans.
    4. Haruhists.
    5. Sighs have just started 2-3 weeks ago while EE..
    6. Sure they're not counting the whole 8 eps of EE as one?
    7. People already lost faith on the show after EE.
    8. 8x3 alternate Swimsuits.

By the comments from Kadokawa, it sounds as if the whole "Endless Eight" thing was due to internal politics, and that at least _some_ people in the companies were clueful, yet powerless (or chose not to put their careers on the line over the issue).

Sure EE is a ripoff but if you scrap 5 of the 8 epsiodes it's still a pretty good arc.

It's funny in an odd way, but I watched each Endless Eight episode, and I wasn't all that bothered by the repetition. I am fully aware and agree with everyone else that this arc didn't need to be even half as long as it was, but I just can't view it as the complete fiasco so many others see it as. In my mind, Endless Eight wasn't much different from watching Groundhog Day, or any movie multiple times, or playing a JRPG and level grinding, or playing an endless video game where you aim for a high score because there is no end except running out of extra men. At least the animation was different throughout, and you can't tell me that watching Asahina get a ball kicked in her face at more than 6 different angles isn't entertaining.

Now the DVD release IS a fiasco. An anime DVD should NEVER have fewer than 4 episodes. There should be no less than 2 hours of data on a disc. The only anime I have ever bought and do not regret buying with only 2 episodes per disc was FLCL, and it was pushing its luck with that tactic, despite how godly FLCL is and was.

    +1

if all people think like you then Kadokawa will never success with this plan. No mater Endless Eight got 4-8 episodes peoples will still complain or support it.

I self think the sales will be not lesser then the previous volume because if they already starting buy it most of them will still going for completing of it.

The Japanese market of Anime sell will not change the system of 2-4 episodes each volume the niche market is not big enough for the hug profits.

I myself don't really care that they made it 8 episodes.
What really bothered me was that this "new season" is only 13 episodes or so long, and EE cut into that whole amount of the season which could have been new content.
Heck. If this new season was 25-30 episodes long, I'd say bring on Endless Eight. At least it's not like.. only 5 new episodes.

There are at least 500 diehard Haruhi fans who buy two each, 500 diehard fans who buy one each and 500 idiots who buy one each, so it'll reach about 1,5k per episode, with about 2,5k for the first and last.

So 1250 for the first and last and 500 for the rest?

The DVD sales problem could have been solved easily by not labeling the disks or the cover inserts so you would buy a pair of episodes at random. That way the whole thing would have been turned into a trading card game. The other, less manly, way of solving it would be to put all 8 episodes on a single DVD, and every time you play it, the DVD player randomly selects one of the episodes.

DVDs cost about $60-$80 in Japan, right? Over $250 for basicly one fukkin episode. The Japanese really get shafted in the value department.

Throw all eight episodes on one DVD would cut production cost and might actually sell some.

Personally, I think the anime industry needs a major downsizing - a culling or purge, if you will. With a more selective, discerning audience and budget/sponsorship levels that are more of an ultimatum for you to "not fuck up" and produce some quality instead of delving into the latest moe blob trend, Kadokawa wouldn't be able to pull off shit like this.

The DVDs will probably sell. Anime fanatics are godless, philistine spendthrifts who are also obsessive/compulsive completists, and our numbers are legion.

    Comment by Anonymous
    13:33 09/09/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

but what the above anon is referring to is that doesn't get rid of "delving into the latest moe blob trend".
in the sense of tastes may change, but replace "moe blob" with any other subject and the trend behavior will still exist.
and the problem with your idea is culling the herd usually results in the opposite. It doesn't spur range and innovation, instead it tends to spur digging of heels and product focus on what is commercially viable. thus further, even more focused, delving into the latest [insert] trend

    Comment by Anonymous
    09:33 09/09/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Actually, that would make things go even more towards trends. Trend-exploiting equals sales a lot more often than not doing it does. Trends are trends for a reason. You might ask for people to be more "discerning" but at the core of things the lowest common denominator likes things that are very base. Same reason that everything else that goes towards the interests of the common folk works better and sells better than that aimed toward a boutique crowd.

I don't know. They churn out anime these days like Nintendo shovelware. I'm really talking about just annihilating half of every animation studio which in may effect a change in an audience's tastes. We've seen instances where changing what is provided to a group can affect its preferences (see westernization and the history of television broadcasting). You know, supply-side theory. It may not work well in economics, but it has its applications.

    Comment by nocturne
    04:04 10/09/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Hardly. A larger pool means that competitors will focus on the latest trends in a sort of moe race to gain more profits than the next guy. An environment without too much promise for wealth, but respected as a form of expression may get better quality. Let's say anime was viewed with as much mysticism and respect as oil painting. You won't get nearly as many anime out as we have now, but I'm pretty sure you'd get better percentage of thoughtfully crafted shows. Animators are making slave wages right now, so it won't be any big deal for them if they want to continue in the business. The fat cats in places like Kadokawa are what's stifling creativity in the industry. Get the cutthroat moneymaking potential out of the market and you may see more Shinkai Makotos in a small-scale environment than a few Sunrises.

We're both discussing in theories, so we can't be certain which is better. But the scenario you're describing is the one going on right now, with K-On! making record sales and TV anime riding the censorship line. The term "tsundere" didn't exist when the industry was smaller. Twintails weren't a staple that plagued half of every female character. Vanguard Princess would not have existed just ten years ago. I firmly believe in a golden age of anime, and it happened prior to this millennium.
