PS3 3.0 Firmware Adds Xbox Beating Features

ps3-playing-pantsu-shoujo.jpg

Sony is clearly not content to rest on what is left of its laurels, for it is apparent the latest 3.0 PS3 firmware, which has supposedly been shown to increase speeds, adds several notable yet unannounced features sure to challenge the Xbox 360’s infamy.

Users report inexplicable freezes in several games, sound problems in others, and that the update actually breaks certain models of PS3 controller.

Many who have bought the newly released PS3 Slim only to have their controllers rendered inoperative have expressed grave dissatisfaction, though for now the problems do not seem hugely widespread.

If Microsoft’s record for introducing new unexpected features and improving the design of their console is anything to go by, Sony will still have its work cut out catching up…

Sony announcing that they will have 'Xbox-killer' features? Reminds me of that time when they announced that the PSX RPG Legend of Dragoon is to be a 'Final-Fantasy' killer but failed.

My 大PS3 80GB is running 3.0 just peachy.

Controller problem was because they were knock-offs and not official sony products, and last I read, this was due to the implementation used in the controller, less because of Sony intentionally killing it.

Everything else seems good and snappy

This is entirely over-stated. 3.0 is working gloriously on my machine. I wouldn't say it's changed much besides aesthetics, but it FEELS like there's less screen tearing when I watch a movie (more because of my relatively low-quality LCD HDTV). Will take further testing.

You know what I am going to buy the new PS3 only because its affordable and plus I can play Blue-ray movies on it.

I bought Halo 3 Theme Xbox version I didn't have any problems, when they release the first PS3 I remember going into the store and watching how well it proformed it turns out that the game demo kept frezzing up It convince me not to buy it.

The only thing that would convince Japanese to buy a Xbox 360 would if they made a Gundam theme Xbox Console that would maybe sell if the Japanese would consinder that idea.

In fact, just because you type with fullstops at each of your short phrases doesn't mean you end the story right there, nor could you claim yourself king in that way.

Sony fails yet again. Japanese gaming companies are losing their edge. they need to make new games that are fun gameplay versus reprinting old franchises. American gaming companies have been providing new features all the time, like project natal, netflix etc. look how succesful World of Warcraft is and modern warfare 1. come on Japan, step it up. we Americans want more from you. Sony ps3 is hella lame and blu ray discs will be obsolete in 10 years. lets go. and why does this website always try to make sony look like an awesome system when it has made less sales then nintendo and xbox?

Um the Ps3 out soled the Xbox 360 not the other way around. Also of the 4 things you mentioned as American achievements in gaming one of them is netflix which is a movie rental agency and the other is project natal which has yet to be released and was already pushed back because it wouldn't work on blacks, or Asians. Also a matter of point World of Warcraft main design staff are from the Europe not America. So yeah. Nuff said.

the problems mentioned here are only for third party controllers... especially the cheapo ones... so far my 3.0 firmware runs perfectly smooth on my 20gb 1st generation ps3....no problems whatsoever.. but when I tried using my friends "controller" from a third party manufacturer the ps3 would not respond to it... but after I plug the original ps3 controllers it works perfectly fine (I use the regular sixaxis one btw)and also tried the DS3 controller and no problems... xbox owners rejoice! prices of their consoles are now lower than that of wii where I live hahahahha

Look harder. Seriously. I could find good games on the XBox if I didn't treat the thing like a radioactive monster, and I have no interest in the majority of the genres it caters to.

While I'm a Nintendo Fangirl and will say it is superior in almost everything (without proof) I'm more than happy to admit that the other gaming companies have redeeming features, games, and other such nonsense. It annoys me to hear people who won't admit that the Wii has its own plus points, just because it doesn't cater to people who feel that 90% of a game's challenge should be learning how to use the fucking controller and call themselves hardcore.

In the enterprise realm of Cisco, Foundry, F5, etc, things have the shit tested out of them and even then some things can slip through. It sounds like entertainment software gets minimal to no testing. Haven't they ever heard of BVT, automation, and regression testing?

hardware compatibility tests in such wide hardware base are almost impossible. but apart from that one would think that os for consoles, which is updated much less frequently than os for pc, should get comparatively more testing. but no, it looks like they just made a few basic positive tests and thats all.
i would understand if they announced sth like "we have a new software update but its not throughly tested. we would like you to help us. load this update and give us feedback. you are updating on your ow risk. consider yourself warned." but crap like we have atm... sigh.

as i said before the race between m$ and s*ny to release updates first can result only in an incomplete products.

And I can pretend throwing my controller/handheld won't break the thing. Ah, the good old days when a system could fall four feet off a shelf when you yanked the controller for some reason and all you'd have to do was cut it off, pull the cartridge out, blow on it, and stick it back in to be guaranteed the thing would still play.

With the record shared in part by all 3 consoles, any tech savvy person who downloads the updates right away is a little dumb. console updates that do things like increase speeds or any other spec altering capabilities tend to screw with your system a little. It's better to wait for these things to be beta tested by the fanboys.
