To Love-Ru Officially Canned

Issue 39 of Shounen Jump magazine has confirmed that Yabuki Kentarou’s tentacle laced alien harem manga To Love-Ru will end next month ending all speculations.
The last chapter will be featured in the August 31st issue of Jump.
While the magazine has said that the decision to end the series was planned by the creators, it is rumoured that the real reason was the lack of fresh storyline, in turn leading to plummeting ratings.
Shueisha has not censored the manga in the Tankouban version, but even the ero-manga upgrades the series is famed for have failed to lift the manga back to its initial success, which has seen TV and OVA anime adaptations.

True, but I wonder what could be done to regain the success it used to have?
to love ru faces 2 big problems. 1, lack of story developement. ok, tentacle rape scene is ok but seriously, we would much rather have some story movement.
and 2, the echiness of it is just too forced. in many chapters, its just randomly thrown in there. when something like that has to be forced, its just sad.
how the series could of been better.
take out about 50 chapters and had them replaced with moving the relationships on. have a few sister chapters where she meets a boy or something. and have lala be more intimate with the lead guy, not in a sexual way, but in a “i love you” way...

I wonder if this would happen to Queen's blade, oh wait! it never did have a real story to start w/ after all! it's all about tits and bewbs! tits and bewbs! This should be a lesson for ero-anime series, if you want to show some hentai stuff w/ your series, you better not put any story at all! just go all hentai all the way baby! "fap mode" fans is what makes this kind of series sky rocket for ratings.
Queen's Blade didn't try to be anything else but an Anime based on an P&P RPG series with Ero illustrations. It succeeded and fans were happy. ToLoveRu tried to be Urusei Yatsura. It failed and fans got bored.
The TRUTH is:
- There is this person called Nakamura Ine who is quite famous on the Nico Nico website (a large Japanese online community somewhat like Youtube), who turned out to be a minor (last year in high school) and also insinuated that he has something going on with a Kashiwagi Shiho.
- Now this Shiho was the wife of Yabuki Kentaro, the author of To-Love-Ru. She met Yabuki when he was looking for assistants, seduced him and ended up becoming his wife and gave birth to a daughter.
- But she hardly did any house work, neglected her daughter, and spent most of her days in front of a computer spending time in Nico Nico etc.
- January 2009, when Yabuki was sick with flu and bedridden, she kidnapped her own daughter and disappeared, and it turned out that she left her daughter at her parents' place while she was doing this and that with Ine.
- February 2009, Yabuki 'begged' Shiho to return for the sake of their daughter, and Shiho did return to Tokyo, but few days later she dropped out once again with the girl, this time taking a notebook computer and Yabuki's credit cards. Yabuki later stopped the cards, but a large sum of money was already taken out.
- Yabuki looked for them everywhere, but to no avail. March 2009, Shiho demanded a divorce on the grounds of personality clash and a large chunk of Yabuki's assets, but when the evidence of her infidelity was discovered on her computer, she then changed her stance and demanded money in exchange for the custody right of the daughter.
- Realizing it would take over a year to settle things, Yabuki accepted her conditions and got the daughter back.
- Haruna Sairenji was based on Kashiwagi Shiho, and there is a reason why her role was reduced dramatically since volume 13, and Yui getting more prominent. And apparently Shiho has sued/demanded more money for the character of Haruna recently.
- A comment of Yabuki's while this was all happening:
[While I was working hard on a manga that was focused on taking young girls' panties off, another man was taking my wife's panties off.]
- I forgot to mention that following the dispute over Haruna's character right, Yabuki feared his daughter getting hurt by all the debacle, so he accepted Shiho's demand yet again and ended the series prematurely.
Oh, that's simple. Make Rito of a fucking tool for ero mishaps, and add a freaking purpose to the story. Sort of hard to care for the romance aspect of the plot (the only running plot it has) when NONE OF THE CHARACTERS get any real development since it flip flops from one character to the next.
There were also too many characters. He should've stopped at Yui...and I even throw her introduction into question. Was she really that necessary? She could've sufficed as a one-shot character
Well you should never just throw a character in for no reason, and it would suck to come up with a new character then never have a chance to use them; there's not much you can do either way.

Shame about to love ru though seriously, it was never story oritentated and whilst i normally hate a manga with lack a plot i never really minded to love ru, it was somewhat refreshing and relaxing, like why you might watch Aria, for me atleast. Good for fapping to, every now and then.

Lvrhina, lets face facts. The manga was forced. Rito had as much personality as a brick wall. You could REPLACE HIM with ANY GENERIC MALE LEAD that does diddly squat, and it wouldn't have affected the non-existent story (love triangle anyone?).
Despite being a protagonist, he was never given any real sort of personality, aside from the indecisive 'nice guy'.
The story could have better had the writing had it actually once tried to put a focus on the main character, or hell, even a side character, but instead, all we got was the same crap for over 160+ chapters. There are only so many different ways that you can force erotic mishap.
Maybe they were trying to please EVERYONE, who knows. But in doing so, I think they sort of forgot that pandering to fans has a fucking limit. Shit, even NARUTO and BLEACH fucking knows that, and still at least TRIES to have a semblance of a semi-existent plot. Here, we got a love suppose love triangle. Christ, I seriously wondered how people could even bother reading it week in, week out.

MANY male characters are often PURPOSELY bland, as they can serve as the shoe that anyone's feet can slip into. Thus it is a harem manga.
I agree with Anon. Action type manga/anime can get away with doing the Dragon Ball formula of stronger enemies and stronger heroes. There are always new abilities learned and new enemies to fight. Love stories don't have that. They can't really make up new things so they have to rely on storytelling, humor, ecchi, or (new) characters. I personally never found To Love-Ru funny or progressive. The only thing I thought it had going for it was the ecchi. Consider Love Hina which had a story and ecchi and it's pretty easy to see why To Love-Ru wasn't great.
The series was okay as long as people were only looking for ecchi, but as a whole it sucked. However, if I only cared about the ecchi I would just look for the doujins on it.

The manga was cancelled because it was boring and predictable soft-core porn. Sure, it's fun for the first 20 chapters or so but if you're still doing the same crap on Chapter 150 that you were doing in Chapter 30, eventually the audience is going to get bored of reading the same thing over and over.
Maybe if the mangaka had focused more on character development and less on crotch shots in every issue the manga might have survived a little longer.

Character development doesnt always have to concern the main character. SO um maybe when OTHER people change it effects the main character.. u must be one of those people that watch the anime but didnt read the manga
When the character changes over the course of the story. Rito is still the same character he was at the beginning of the story: Good when in a pinch, but still torn between Lala and Haruna and incapable of choosing between the two and/or moving forward in any significant way.

Ratings perhaps (as in the magazine popularity poll ratings), but the series just had 3 more OADs greenlit, presumably as a result of the sales success of the first three OAD volumes, and to coincide with the story's conclusion. I remember someone from the publisher being quoted as saying that it's a series that sells well, but no one wants to admit to liking (hence the polls). I think it's more likely that they just felt the time was right.
Different target market maybe. Jump is always targeted for the Shounen (young teenagers market) while the DVDs can be bought even by young kids

Canned? For me this is pretty unexpected, since it's pretty much like Doraemon (which got 45 volumes!), primarily because Lala's inventions but with a lot of ecchiness and pretty girls. Also I like the fact that the mangaka has added some cameo characters from "Black Cat".
I won't say there's no development at all in the manga; there's definitely development of the characters in the manga, but sure it's slow.
By the way, how poorly did the To Love-Ru manga sell?

It was "entertaining" for a while, shame it got canceled. I wonder if this means Kentaro Yabuki will go back to making a sequel to Black Cat.
I was waiting for it to end. I didn't mind the ecchi but it was in pretty much ALL the chapters. Just in having sex with the same girl for a long time, you get bored. Couple of plots here and there wouldn't hurt.
Like they've all mentioned in the comments, bleach and naruto are crap, shit, etc... but they always develop some new plots or characters.

Whoever wrote this article should actually KNOW what their talking about to avoid dishing out misinformation.
First of all, TLR volumes regularly sale over 200,000 copies in their first week on book shelves; that tops most of the series in SJ besides OP, Naruto, Bleach, and Reborn. The latest volume also sold over 200k; popularity is not why it ended abruptly. The reason why it appeared to rank low in the weekly ratings is because the japanese kids who were voting on the series were too embarrassed to rank TLR because of how ecchi it is.
I don't know where you got this "the rumor is that it was canceled due to declining popularity". Way to pull shit out of your ass. The real rumor was that it was, as SJ announced, the illustrator's choice to stop illustrating the manga because he could not draw for a weekly manga and take care of his 3 year old daughter at the same time, now that he has full custody over her.
