Observers of Kyoto Animation’s otaku exploitation anime classics Haruhi and K-ON! can’t help but notice that the new Haruhi episodes show character designs which seem to have veered sharply towards those of K-ON!

Haruhi first season copied character designs from K-On somehow. Probably some kind time travel thing, I think.

Yeah, I noticed this too and, honestly, was pretty peeved. I by far prefer the old style, especially when we look at screens such as first image, second from top and right most. Like, omfg why is Kyon's face so flat?!! It was never like that before! I really hated shots like that from K-On, and now they're doing it to Haruhi too. Then again, they already killed Haruhi for me a long, long time ago. I guess it's fine if they want to bury it deeper.

Pretty peeved? At what exactly? It's called progression: It is just like how Azuma Kiyohiko can't bring himself to just make small touch ups on the new "improved" Azumanga.
It's like complaining about Kanon's animation after watching Air. They made huge improvements, mostly in terms of animation, but it seems like people can't see past the K-on influence.
Now THIS is just nitpicking.
It could just be a result of experience, that their style changed due to their experience with k-on. Or they got the same key artist for k-on and that maybe the previous key artists from haruhi were unavailable for some reason.
Not surprised because essentially I already knew that from the first Haruhi series followed by Clannad and then K-On! and back to Haruhi has the same character designer.
Very first thing I noticed. If anyone else noticed(and I'm sure majority have), KyoAni's animations are usually influenced by their previous anime(bar maybe Lucky Star), and in a good way. The new Haruhi "season" takes the good from K-on! while still managing to retain the Haruhi, and it works very well thanks to Noizi Ito's original moe illustrations for the light novel.
The point is that this style actually works for Haruhi because the first season didn't necessarily try to emulate Noizi Ito's moe style. If anything, it's closer to its original form than before. So there should be nothing to complain about. Now, it's a different story if KyoAni decided to K-onify the new FMP(if they ever manage get to it).
To people claiming that the art style changed after Endless Eight, you guys are retarded. Watch Bamboo Rhapsody again as the style is consistent with all of the 2nd season episodes. The first thing you should take note from the first season 2 episode is that Haruhi actually has teeth. It's a subtle difference, but it's one of the "moe" elements that was present in K-on that they probably decided to keep(assuming Haruhi wasn't already being worked on before/during K-on).
So? The original design sucked. Everyone looked like they had a bad case of strabismus - it was weirding me out.
New one is a bit better, but still not enough.
I don't know about "sucked", but Kyon's design never sat all that well with me in the first season. Now he actually looks young enough to be in high school.

i really hate this new style. part of what made the first season of haruhi amazing was that every episode was nicely animated and the art was beautiful. k-on sucks and this new 'style' fails.

The worse it that the animation is all worse. It became less detailed, with fewer lights and colors. It looks to simple, while Haruhi's original style seemed awesome and much better than the average anime.

First haruhi season was different then most other animes out there, K-ON is different from other animes but quite similar to Haruhi, i'd go ahead and say the episode where haruhi sings is the father of the K-ON show.
They are both extremely good, Haruhi is the pioneer though and it's storyline is so unique i doubt i'll see any that's close to it.
Bad Haruhi is better than any other anime released in the past three years.

Endless Eight contained a couple of episodes with similarly K-On-esque art, so I assume it's just the different animators' different styles in evidence, as they work on episodes on rotation. The Art Director is meant to prevent that kind of thing from happening though.

It's a little jarring if you watch one of the previous episodes and then one of the new ones. The shading and coloring styles changed.

True, the designs in Haruhi (particularly Haruhi and Mikuru) seem a lot closer to K-On! now, particularly in the more prominent upper teeth that now sometimes show on Haruhi. The guys don't look too different.
I guess it's to be expected, with probably a lot of the K-On! animators working on Haruhi now. Eh, doesn't bother me all that much.

Not only the change is not that bat it is not even noticeable unless you get obsessive over the details.
That said, I think Haruhi's style was even more influenced by the Haruhi-chan short series and specially Haruhi's personality was more influenced by Izumi Konata than anything from K-On!.

This isn't really second season...it doesn't advance the story at all.Just filled in some blanks(that really weren't noticeable).It's just a lot of unnecessary extra back story :/ And them using the K-On art just implies that they produced this episode more recently then e8
I suffered through E8. It was horrible, every week wondering if this would be the episode that moves the story along. As for the art style thing, I am not suprised. Kosuke Fujishima went through a LOT of dramatic artwork changes in the Ah! My Goddess manga. At one point, he was drawing the goddess' as porcelain dolls.
