The latest weekly Anime DVD Sales rankings have been released by Oricon, highlighting the many mecha fans that are purchasing the flood of Gundam 30th Anniversary re-releases of classic Gundam titles, and of course the immense popularity of anything directed by Miyazaki.

Notes

  • Oricon lists this as their 2009/08/17 Weekly Ranking.
  • “LE” or “SE” signify Limited or Special Editions.

20 ルパン三世 VS 名探偵コナン / Lupin VS Detective Conan

Clearly, Miyazaki’s latest film Ponyo continued its massive sales run, bolstered by the huge numbers of mainstream commoners who adore Studi Ghibli’s films.

The next spot goes to an otaku-only title, Vol. 2 of the Pizza Hut-loving Warring States action series Sengoku Basara, which pulled in a respectable 7,642 units in its first week on sale.

The DVD boxset of Tekkaman Blade (a classic 1992 TV series) managed to climb to the #3 spot, despite costing around $300, certainly an impressive feat.

The most obvious observation to be made from the rest of the list is the popularity of the various re-released Gundam movies, all as part of the classic mecha series’ 30th Anniversary celebrations, heralded by the giant 1/1 scale Gundam statue.

Fan-favorite Char’s Counterattack, regarded by some to be among the, if not the, best mecha films of all time, being the most popular amongst these is obvious, although the ranking of the 3 First Gundam compilation movies might be odd…

The extraordinarily sharp falloff of anime DVD sales after the first week or so of sales is well displayed by the placements of the popular Haruhi-chan DVD 3 (released 07/31) coming in at #14 and the best selling all-time TV anime release K-ON! Vol. 1 (released 07/29) at the #20 spot.

any theories on why tekkaman blade made such a huge comeback all of a sudden?

    Comment by FSF
    13:23 13/08/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Much the same reason why many titles on DVD ranking charts do: they appeal to the masses. Tekkaman is a classic Tatsunoko franchise with more weight to throw around in Japan than most anywhere else. Granted dropping $300 doesn't constitute a general consumer purchase, I think it appears for the same reason Totoro or Char's Counterattack do. It's a popular, vintage title that's recently been brushed off.

I'd also like to point out the elephant in the room with Madagascar 2. Please, Japanese families, stop.

In regarding Tekkaman Blade, I think with joined Super Robot War game series actually help introduce the series to the younger generation otaku.

The hugely edited and dubbed English (or should I say Americanised?) version "Technoman" or whatever it was called sucked...it just failed to deliver what the original has the offer. Tekkaman Blade was epic as Blade/D-boy was one of very few true "tragic hero" that's ever been seen on anime who basically lost almost EVERYTHING he cherished to the alien invaders.

Seriously if anyone watch the crappy English version and got put off by it, go find the Japanese version with sub to watch.

It's worth it to buy Tekkaman Blade on DVD. Media Blasters did a great job on it and you can probably get it all for $60 (49 episodes plus those three short five minute OVAs they did).

The Oricon charts are as objective as they come. Based strictly on sales figures (gathered in their own unique way) and the general definition of animation. This allows American animtion like Ratatouille to occupy the charts. Simply put, Oricon details animation sold in Japan. Not just Japanese animation.
