You don't need to know mahjong to enjoy this but it does help. The stuff that happens is actually even more preposterously clever than Akagi, so long as you understand it (the difference being that Akagi spent episodes explaining shit, Saki doesn't).

I actually started to play mahjong because of Saki.. Now the game is very fun (and complicated)..
The series has not much to do with the actual game in terms of realism, but it is still fun because of the fan service, the atmosphere and the yuri theme..
Anyway, guess most westerns don't have the spine to play the game for an extended period anyway. o_O

Akagi is shit because there's no bewbs.
I have watched both, and while Akagi has no women in it, the storyline in it is at least ten times as good. So while I do love the fanservice and cuteness in Saki, Akagi is the better anime by far.
