Mio-Maniacal Otaku’s $5,000 Spending Spree

mio-akiyama-oppai-headphones.jpg

The propensity of K-ON! obsessed maniacs to gleefully buy every single product innocuously appearing in the show has been clear for some time, but the latest otaku Mio-maniac takes things to new levels: he apparently bought 6 sets of AKG K701 headphones, used by Mio in a few scenes.

These high end headphones cost some $800 each…

mio-headphones.jpg

Theories range from him genuinely having bought the cans to him having just printed out the covers to the boxes, which would perhaps be even more incredible than just buying them outright.

Whatever the case, noone doubts the terrible nature of Mio-mania at this stage…

Don't know if anyone knew this, but to actually get the 'quality' out of the AKG K701, one not only need a good audio source (MP3 definitely out of question) but a good headphones amplifier as well... So Mio's way of plugging it straight into her laptop/portable CD player won't make it shine (they simply don't pack enough punch to drive the AKGs)... And finally, these phones need to be 'break-in' for several hundred hours of usage before reaching their optimal performance... sort of like a long warm-up session once out of the box... Too much of a trouble for common folks like me...

    10:12 28/07/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

    That's a bit exaggerated.

My source is a MOTU ultralite mk3, hooked into a little dot mk3 amp. So - source, amp, all covered.

Now, mp3s. MP3s are fine. Give it over 200ish kbps and you're all set.

Breakin is about 100 hours. A lot but not as much as you said.

having akgs for portable use is completely overkill; you can get basically the same sound with a good pair of technics

studio recording/hifi equipment is another story, however

pffft you audiophile types make me laugh.
double blind tests show above 256k mp3s are indistinguishable from lossless on headphones (big systems where subbass/infrabass and ~20khz+ reproduction is important are different). granted laptops do not make great sources generally because of issues with power supply etc noise.

a lot of devices wont power big cans like you say but power is power when it comes to solid state amps. any amp, unless it is incredibly badly made or having too much power drawn from it, will sound exactly the same as any other when the volume levels are matched.

speaker/headphone drivers are 'broken in', i.e. the physical properties of the materials and structure no longer change (excluding things like rubber perishing, paper getting damp/decomposing and corrosion of metals) and therefore the sound will not change as it is determined by physical characteristics, within seconds of a signal being played through them.

blah just saw this is from '09, oh well.

The Headphones costs around 220€(300USD) in Germany and Austria. If they are imported, 1800USD(+shipping and duty) are not a big deal if you assume that he will only shoot a photo and sell five of them for a higher price in Japan.

... unless Kyo Animation is getting "product placement fees", in which case Kyo Ani is getting money beyond just sales of the anime.

It's common for movie companies in the U.S. to sell "product placements" to Pepsi, Coca-Cola, clothing manufacturers, etc.

I believe they never have competing products (i.e., Coke AND Pepsi, Nike AND Addidas, etc.) in the same movie, and that the placement fees depend on how strongly a product is placed, and how many other products are placed.

Fender no longer makes keyboard instruments, so Kyo Ani can sell placements to both Fender and Korg.
