A Chinese company is equipping its bus fleet with emergency bricks so passengers can make good their escape should an accident befall them.
The emergency bricks are painted yellow and marked “Emergency”, in case that is not obvious enough.
The bus company claims it had to take this expedient due to the fact that customers kept stealing its safety hammers; they are hopeful nobody will want to steal a brick, although this being China it is hard to be sure…

A brick works too sure, the hammers are relatively expensive, however they the hammers designed for use when a vehicle hits the water and being able to escape drowning. I'm not sure how effective the brick would be in a situation like that.

In my country, Mexico, a third world coutry, Buses and Subway wagons have an emergency lever on the windows, they usually unlock the whole frame to remove the glass...
And then I see this, shame on China.
It's imported from the US. Here in Canada, we got the same thing.
That's the point, even my country can afford that mechanism, and of course, no need to have a "spare hammer" on the wagons, unless they begin to steal the levers and/or the frames.

I've seen people steal those tiny metal mallet things on Arriva buses here in UK. Admittedly I was one of them when I was younger. All the rage back in school. Amazing little things, could break an entire glass pane at a phone booth with just a slight tap.

Actually, this is related to the recent bus on fire news. Since there was a bus that was caught on fire, and many people were killed (there are full videos of it as someone typed on their cell phones), so people needed a way to break open the windows. This is more of a joke related to that incident than an actual thing. If you knew the details to the incident, you would actually get the full joke.

Here in Russia you, also, wont find a single emergency hammer in the bus, they were also all stolen. However, to the contrary of China, we dont even have bricks, so in case of emergency everyone in the bus is screwed uless someone happen to have somthing heavy. That's pretty normal for us.
