The mention is slipped in with the industry announcement surrounding a Megami Tensei themed pachinko machine, so it seems unlikely to be an outright fabrication, though of course it could be genuinely mistaken, and it will almost certainly turn out to be “mistaken” and quietly excised.
Still, that the new Persona game will be initially released on the PS3 seems virtually a given considering the platform history of the Megami Tensei series, so this news is none too shocking, though certainly timely after the disappointing lack of a next generation Persona 4.

The Persona series has never been a real cash cow here in the states given it's mediocre(at best)sales of the PS2's various versions and it's likely to flop if released only on the PS3 here.If the producers want to make money, they'd make it for the other two systems and the DS and forget the PS3.

Knowing ATLUS, I highly doubt they'll use whatever hardware the PS3 has, and just make a game that looks like it should be on PS2. They don't exactly have the budget of namco or square.

As long as the cost of developing PS3 games remains prohibitively high(for some studios anyways), there will always be new games for PS2. Plus VN will be on PS2 for a very long time.

I'd rather they didn't do a PS2 version. It would limit the PS3 game to the PS2's capabilities. Cross-gen development is almost never good for the current gen versions.
No...It will be better if they are doing a PS2 version. Persona 4 has a great storyline, but its graphics sucks. How could they handle developing a PS3 game when they are not able to utilize the functions of PS2?
I hate to know what your standards for graphics are. Persona 4 had one of the most solid graphical outings on the PS2 I've ever seen. It may not be hyper-realistic, but it's level of detail was crisp and it ascribed to its own style and ran away with everyone's (fair) expectations.
Whether or not it's your cup of tea, P4's graphics were far from any usage of the word "suck". Bite your tongue.

That's nonsense. PS2 ports are usually dump-down versions of PS3 games(Dynasty Warriors 6, Gundam Musou 2, etc.). It has no bearing on PS3 versions of the games whatsoever.

The PS3 is the best choice for Japanese sales if they want it to be a console RPG. If they want it to be a portable RPG... then, for shame, Atlus. For shame.
Sales were basically half Japan half US for P4 (that was before the much later European release). That tends to point to having a dual release unless either Sony or MS steps up with incentives for development.
