Newly released doujin fighting game “Vanguard Princess” has attracted much attention and a rapidly increasing fandom thanks to its fine gameplay, appealing graphics, oppai, and perhaps most of all the fact that it is free.

vanguard-princess-06.png

The game itself is a straightforward 2 on 2 moe style fighting game with plenty of pantsu.

Vanguard Princess spent three years in development under the direction of a supposed former Capcom employee, and its quality certainly seems to attest to professional involvement.

Many players are praising the quality of the game, even more so considering its free distribution; it can be downloaded here.

More stills and video of gameplay are available below:

Microscopic analysis has also revealed the game has some apparent nopan extras:

The game has already encountered some operational issues on non-Japanese computers; as English support is unlikely to be forthcoming, you may wish to report any problems and solutions below.

    No all girl games?

Well there's ARCANA HEART which came before this game and just had a third installment announced, but i think im liking this game a lot better already, for a lot of reasons, the best being LUNA :3

And before all this there was Variable Geo, which had nudity in it and good gameplay for the time. I'd say that still had a better cast than any other all female fighter even today (YUKA TAKEUCHI! and most of the girls were above 5 feet too). Ofcourse at VG's time, the only other all girl fighting games were from Sailor Moon I guess.

    "Based on?" ...

You do realize that Arcana Heart wasn't the first to do "all girl fights, oppai, and pantsu", right? And that many others will do that same little concept without Arcana Heart really involving anything? This has nothing to do with that game. This is a niche. My friend calls them "panty fighters".

Frankly, this game looks better than Arcana Heart, too. I like the characters more.

    Probably because Kung-fu and Hakkyokuken are one of the most overused fighting style ever in games/movies... With Luna, I can even draw parallels to Lei & Xiaoyu from Tekken 3 ^^;;

Although Luna's Gun-fu is something else entirely. If you can manage her stances right, she is a bit broken in terms of damage.

You should try Haruka. All of her moves are designed around ranged combat. Coupled with a shoryuken, any Ryu lover would find her style easy to pick up. The only drawback is that her supper is impossible to combo off and most intelligent opponents will block it.

Don't even need to do that. Change the folder name to something with roman characters. then change the .exe and .kgt files to something with roman characters, but they have to be the same thing. Like, if you change the EXE to vanpri.exe, change the .kgt to vanpri.kgt. Then run the program using applocale.

    Comment by Anonymous
    05:32 09/07/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Nevermind, I've found the solution to this problem. What you need to do to run this game is you need to rename the "ヴァンガードプリンセス.exe" and "ヴァンガードプリンセス.kgt" files in the "ヴァンガードプリンセス" game directory using a name made up of western characters. You need to rename both files with the exact same name, and be sure to add the ".kgt" suffix when you rename the kgt file.

    Comment by SquishyJohnny
    05:57 09/07/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Yup that's probably everyones problem I already posted the same exact solution I just forgot the KGT file name

"Install microsoft app locale change the exe file name to something english and the KTP? KGP? file as well and then run it thru locale on japanese settings."

If you run it through app locale without changing the KGT and the EXE file name to english then you'll still get that black box>exit which is basically everyones problem.

You need to install Applocale from Microsoft's website. Additionally, you have to have have East-Asian languages installed (Control Panel>>Regional & Language Options>>Language tab), and then you need to set the non-unicode language option to "Japanese" (In the "advanced" panel of Regional & Language Options).

Afterwards, once you downloaded the game, you need to rename the “ヴァンガードプリンセス.exe” and “ヴァンガードプリンセス.kgt” files in the “ヴァンガードプリンセス” folder using a non-Japanese name. The names have to be the same and you have to put a “.kgt” suffix when you rename the kgt file.

For the Linux peeps, this works on Wine according to two testers on the AppDB, with one saying it works perfectly and the others saying the only problem being that it won't return to windowed mode after going fullscreen. I haven't tested it myself though.

I don't understand why people would rather flame eachother than actually just help those not as used to getting things like this to work. Human nature I guess. Anyhow, here goes my attempt at being helpful:

For those getting the "a black screen pops up for a second then disappears, and the game doesn't start" problem:
-after extracting the game folders from the z7 SFX file, look in the main folder (called "vanpri" by default after initial extraction), the top folder inside it(called "ヴァンガードプリンセス", translation: VANGADOPURINSESU) has a launcher in it (appears as a red & blue icon).
-Use the launcher in that folder instead of the "ヴァンガードプリンセス.exe へのショートカット (translation: VANGADOPURINSESU.Exe shortcut to)" file in the main folder (which looks the same as the actual launcher.. the shortcut seems to not work as well as the actual launcher for some people)
-Make sure to set your system locale to Japanese for non-Unicode programs FIRST before running the launcher, by going to: control panel > regional and language options > administrative > change system locale ... and set it to "Japanese (Japan)"
-You'll need to restart your PC/laptop/OS before the locale change is effective.

I suck at typing up instructions, but I still kept it simple. I didn't have to rename anything to english for the game to work, but you CAN anyway if it makes finding things quicker, the game will still run. Hope this actually helps someone. ^-^

Changing the kgt and the exe to english, example vanpri is pretty much the easiest way. Nice instructions/attempt on instructions none the less. Hongfire has been covering this game since it was released so all the information is already posted on those forums which is where I got my info.

Ok. Just to point out. The game is created using the Tsukuru Engine by Enterbrain, the company behind the RPG Maker series (which probably explains why this game is free). Since Applocale doesn't work, you can try renaming the files to engish and run it that way. And if that doesn't work, there's a program called "NT Locale Emulator Advance 0.86 Beta" that lets you run the game well even in Japanese (which I use).

As about operational issues, the only thing you have to do is changing the language into japanese at regional and language options at control panel. Just like you have to do with some japanese visual novels. ;)

    I downloaded the game, extracted it using 7zip . . .

and I clicked on something inside one of the folders that looked like it was supposed to star the game, and it just showed a window and then disappeared!

How do youguys been able to play the game?

I suck at arcade fighting games.

The visual/audial and economical attractiveness of this particular game helped to significantly ease the pain of that realization.

Works fine for me, on Windows 7 x64 (Japanese edition with English MUI pack instead of the other way around...) No file changing needed 4 me at all xD This is one of the reasons I usually prefer to install Japanese versions of Windows when possible, but too bad for me in XP you can only use MUI`s in the English base install...

Just got the damn thing working! Had a hell of a time since I'm running Vista! And it's actually really good! It's so fun I don't want to turn it off. The controls are odd and there doesn't seem to be a way to restart or return to the main screen once a game has strted but it's nothing too bad.

I don't remember the name of the blonde haired loli with the ball spikes, but she's awesome.
