The latest ranking for the most interesting anime of Spring 2009, brings with it some upsets, though obviously the number one title is a given…

The results come by way of Dengeki Online, web portal of the massive ASCII Media Works publishing company, including the likes of Dengeki Daioh, Dengeki Moeoh and Dengeki Bunko among its otaku-oriented magazine lineup, where it held a poll for the “Most Interesting” anime of the recently concluded 2009 Spring season.

The results are none too surprising, with the #1 spot easily being taken by what was unquestionably the choice series of the season by otaku:

  • The results are from an online poll at Dengeki Online taken from June 19 to July 1 that asked which newly aired 2009 Spring Anime was most おもしろかった, which translates to “most interesting /amusing”.

#1 K-ON!
#2 Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden)
#3 Saki
#4 FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST
#5 Sengoku Basara
#6 Dragonball Kai
#7 Valkyria Chronicles
#8 Basquash!
#9 Asura Crying
#10 Cross Game

K-ON! taking the throne should not be a surprise to anyone, given the KyoAni show’s great popularity and with the quality of the later episodes still fresh in people’s minds.

Saki or the Fullmetal Alchemist remake might have seemed a more likely candidate for the next two spots, making Eden of the East’s position the closest thing to a surprise on the rankings. Certainly, Eden’s higher than average production quality, among other things, must have aided.

Fullmetal Alchemist’s spot may be lower than expected by some, but given that the show is currently covering subject matter that was handled by the original series’s 30 initial episodes in around half that amount, fans are likely awaiting divergence of the new series from the old.

In any case, rankings for this year’s Spring season will probably come out to be harder fought than this Summer season, given the relative slow pace of the new season, yielding only the new Haruhi season, Spice and Wolf II and Zan Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei as obvious candidates for popular late-night anime.

Saki is a good anime actually. It just gives impossible abilities to characters like Prince of Tennis, and that is why some people hate it. Also, people who have no clue about mahjong and hate yuri would not like Saki either.

    @Char

No, it's the other way around, people who understand mahjong laugh at it's shit improbabilities and people who don't know anything about it just look at the pretty effects and go ''oooh :o'' at the moves while enjoying the yuri.

I'm part of the latter for one.

A giant robot basketball show is usually something I wouldn't even look at, but I was completely drawn in and it's my unexpected favourite show this season, followed by Natsu no Arashi. Then Mazinger and Hayate S2 - Hinagiku arc Yay!

K-on was of course very enjoyable but had most of the funniest parts in the first four eps and, for a show about a band, hardly any music. They always cut to just the last few notes of practice. Lots of still shots too. I still listen to the songs though.

Watching haruhi repeat itself -over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over&over again- might be nostalgic for you.

Actually, I'm not surprised Eden of the East scored this high, it's story, characters, background, voice acting, they all seem to press the right buttons.

The first "season" of FMA Brotherhood is basically what most have seen, so perhaps that contributed to it being knocked out of the top three. Now that FMA:B is completely following the manga, it'll hopefully pick up in rankings from now on.

K-ON is the shittiest moeblob anime of the year, Basara is one of the worst game adaptations I've ever watched, and even Nike-advertisement Shitsquash and DBKai made it to the list? Seriously, Dragon Ball Kai?!

Eden was pretty enjoyable, I meant it as in I won't say it's good 'till it's complete. The movie can go wrong in so many ways.

I haven't watched shangri-la for the past few episodes, but it's beginning was amazing. What's the matter not moe or GAR enough for you? The plot is too complicated? Don't like Murata's designs?

I didn't even watch Asura Cryin', saw it was shit from the premise and the raw. Only Chihiro subbed it too, so I guess I was right.

No, Shangri-la was essentially boring and absolutely ridiculous. Gonzo should stick to churning out fanservice (like with Saki) instead of trying to produce "lol deep" plot oriented shows. They tried it with Dragonaut and Blassreiter too. Look how those turned out.
Basically they haven't released anything good with an engaging plot since Welcome to the NHK.

Next, Fullmetal Alchemist.. gee, what's so appealing about thoose alchemist guys and this walking armor? I hate them.

Sengoku Basara. Man, what a piece of shit. A disgrace to any Sengoku Jidai anime.

Dragonball Kai. Good, worthy piece of.. ok, it's great anime, but I never been into dragon ball...

Overall = worst season this year

What other Sengoku Judai shows have you been watching? Outside of Koei, I've not stumbled across one.

And Dragonballs kaka? That kiddyfied pile of shit threw me for a- I stopped when Toei lost its balls and hollyweirded it.. for the Children! >sob<

K-on! and Eden's popularity in Japan aren't surprising to me at all.
Although Eden might prove to be even more popular in western nations.

Poor old unloved Basquash. Best animation of anything on that list, easily. Eden deserves a top spot regardless though.

'Basquash' with its lovable retard of a main character warms my heart and I've been watching it when I can. Perhaps because of it being a overt sell-out to nike might be the cause of disinterest for it?

Screw you mr/iss. anon flippant boytoy-girl! That anime is the first one to employ a little taste of '300' during one of the battle sequences. The third episode if you all are slightly interested.

The sword battle animation is bar none the best I've seen since the movie 'The Stranger'. It rarely has the typical still shots of characters screaming, striking whatever way, with action lines flying behind them and then cutting to the two fighter slamming into each other. 'Guin Saga' is a recent show to prove that, but I like that one too for other reasons. The animators actually gave a fuck and showed two individual dual without that crap!

Perhaps the stories a bit feather weight, but for this. I don't give a fuck. Ever since watching 'The Stranger', I thirsted for more fluid sword fights and 'Tears to Tiara' fills that bill.

Anyways, the situation involving that duke being condemned to possible death by the governing body of old farts is fascinating and the battles to come will be epic for it!

They tried some 'Zetsubo~' infusing that felt shallow and I did like the actual manga, so that show is a loss.

A lot of manga to anime fall into junk like this. 'Resurrection Princess' is a prime example of great read to absolute pile of Dung.

Eden of the East deserves some recognition, it’s really outstanding and Akira constantly flashing his ass is a plus.
FMA will rise higher now that the Xingese people are about to be introduced. Ling is what everyone has been waiting for.

For this summer season I'm looking forward to Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou. Very funny and a little ecchi from what I've seen in the episode 00.

That and the seiyuus are my favorite, Ai Nonaka and Haruka Tomatsu!

Seeing how the FMA manga series is coming to an end, I am guessing that the animation company won't be diverging too far from the original story. In fact I'm a bit jaded by the beginning, but I will have no doubt greater interest on how they handle much of what is happening now.

The new haruhi show has completely filled me with disgust now. FOUR episodes and possibly more surrounding an interesting idea that could of been done in TWO was enough to disgust a fan subtitler to drop it! You understand? A fan dropped this series for something else and that shows me that I'm not the only one who is sick of that shit.

kyo-twits dropped it Hard on this sequel after the wonderful show K-ON.

    HARD.

Can we say jaded? These are television shows, not lovers. You can't get mad when the getting isn't so good.

I just started watching K-On (as in I just watched the first episode) and it was funny, so I intend to watch the rest. I will not fill my diaper (after first actually getting a diaper so as not to be silly) with obviousfagtrollpoo if it's not that good. Seriously people. Seriousleh.

Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty good so far, even though it's been a retread. The new material should start showing up soon. Over all anything Fullmetal is awesome (unless it's on something called a "Pee-Ess-Too").

Dragon Ball Kai? If I were interested in Dragon Ball, I might actually care to watch it. But I don't, so meh. Besides, it got butchered. At least no more filler crap.

I haven't watched any of the other shows so I'm can't say anything about them. I eat trolls for breakfast.
