At least the decay probably mostly occurred at the tail end of the 5 years. Really, there's no way it wasn't eventually just screaming for somebody to help it near the end.

Maybe this is just because I've read too many... unusual... h-manga, but isn't the health and viability of a horse's horse-piece the sort of issue the daughter in the story would have been first to take notice of and complain about? (not because of anything immediately perverted, just out of a presumed female fascination for a horse's renowned size)

Is it really possible she was caring for the pony as a gift if she didn't even notice this and seek help? Caring for a horse is a fair amount of work. I grew up in the countryside, and several neighbors had them along with other farm animals... the droppings and the smell are usually what deflate a little girl's romantic notions of owning a pony.
