Didn't realize there's beauty in the imperfection of teeth (and especially the Japanese people's take on it), but with a dentist in the family who comments quite regularly on the condition of teeth of people on TV, I have formed the habit of seeing beauty in the perfection of teeth.

I think women with larg bossoms are more attractive than the flat chest ones. Or healthy women are more attractive than obese women. Does that make me a racist, too? Just because somebody think a perfect set of teeth is more attractive than a crook set of teeth doesn't mean he's racist.

Though I do not agree with the first anon's lashing at Americans or the racist implications of the comments, I do kind of get why people tend to assume that comments about teeth comes from Americans.

The thing is, save America, pretty much anywhere else in the world have a less rigid view about what is called attractive. Sure there are lots of people who also get braces in those areas but usually it only goes for people with some serious orthodontic issues or people whose parents have bought into the whole as perfect as you can be thing.

If you travel around a bit to the rest of the other developed countries, even though they are financially capable to have braces done, they don't. It is perfectly natural or normal to have slightly crooked teeth. You don't really get the kind of disgust about crooked teeth. The completely straight, veneered, shaped teeth don't happen in nature and most people know that and can live with it. It is all about cultural norms like what basilio has said.

The thing is, orthodontics are kind of like plastic surgery. It can save lives but mostly it is done for the askew view of beauty. If you don't have straight teeth, get braces. If you have small tits, get implants. If you hate waiting for your hair to grow, get extensions. You want to be tanned like all those Hollywood actresses, you get sprayed like them. Are they necessarily bad? No, they are just choices regarding our superficial looks. People just have to understand it is just that, decisions about manufactured beauty. Not wrong, and you just have to keep your mind open and let people who have chosen otherwise to be.

So I don't like how people have put labels on this being a racist/American issue, I personally just don't like the rigid perfect beauty thing. It is perfectly fine to change what you don't like, it is also perfectly fine to let things remain. People should just have a wider view of things and beauty in general.

me too, i think she could have her teeth fixed, it will looks better, but it's not kind of racist. i can have my own aesthetic can't I? also, they can have their's. In japanese culture, they define "nature" as classic beautiful, that's why they rarely use perfume. it's the same here, they prefer to leave everything just what the god has created.

Having bad teeth is completely unhealthy, you don't know all the problems that it brings, starting from small things like headaches and bad smell, is like having flat feet or worst.

You sound like you are implying that having slightly crooked teeth is akin to having bad teeth and also deem it fact that slightly crooked teeth will definitely give you bad breath and headaches. I am no dentist, but I think those issues might actually come from bad hygiene and decaying teeth, not from having slightly crooked teeth.

I won't argue with you regarding what you find attractive because that is just a personal preference and it is subjective. If you stop at just "ewww, I hate crooked teeth" then whatever, but your implications are god-damn stupid.

Any orthodontist or dentist (regardless if they're trying to reel in more patients) will tell you that having a misaligned bite will hurt your mouth in the future with consequences ranging from worn teeth to them falling out entirely.
It's the sole reason my brace treatment has stretched out a year longer than it should have. The contract was paid off over a year ago so any further appointments are coming out of my orthodontist's time and pocket. He's spending a shitload of time on my bite even though my front teeth are already aligned.
Getting braces for straight teeth isn't just about superficial looks, it's for health benefits as well.

As for what anon said, any non anal dentist who seriously care about both you and your chequebook will tell you it depends on how bad your misalignment is. If it is serious, obviously you will benefit from having braces put in, but if it is just slightly crooked, your life will be no different from someone who has if you don't... Yes, it might be hard to believe, but both braces nazi and crooked teeth will have to brush their teeth, floss daily and visit their dentist twice a year for check ups... You won't get some free pass to exempt you from dental hygiene. Get ready for this breaking news, THEIR LIVES WILL PRETTY MUCH BE THE SAME!!! Except for the teeth nazi out there who wants to convince themselves more than anyone else that their money is well spent by ragging on random individuals to go spend money on braces as well.
