These films are a remake of the original with new material and different events, as well as a different ending, and considering there's a new main character too and from what we saw near the end of the first film thing should be pretty different from the original show.

tldr;They change the plot dramatically and just retain the basic elements of the original.

I've read an Interwiev with Sadomoto where he said that she was SUPPOSED to look out of place.
I've already seen the movie and I can tell you that she's a great, non-sterotypical character who is on par with Rei and Asuka with just the right mix of fitting and unfitting traits. She somohow filled a hole that I didn't notice before in the eva cast...

I think the Headband is a shout-out to another Mari from Gainax' earlier works who also wore such a headband.
Don't judge poor Mari before you have seen the movie. Once you know what her personality is like, everything will make Sense. The stripped swimsuit, the extravagant glasses, the unfittingly-colored headband, the ponitails...
It's all because she can't tell that these things look pretty overdone together. Because of her personality. She's a freak who sings in battle, talks a lot to herself and has no sense of Danger. And she can take care of herself perfectly. She spends half of her screentime fighting and she seems to enjoy it. Plus, she has an odd fixation on her sense of smell which could be percieved as either creepy or cool and unique. (I obviously support the lattter)

....And YES, Sadomoto *did* desighn her.

Either you hate moe or you watch too much of it, but either way you seem to see it in the wrong places (or, at least, wherever you want to see it).

To be completely honest, I think she's even with Asuka and Rei. You could leave the moe goggles on and see them as however moe as you want them to be, or leave them off and see them all as "normal people". Frankly, I've seen more girls that look similar to Mari than Asuka.

I honestly don't think she's out of place. It's sort of weird to even argue based on appearances and then talk about "normal people" when you have Rei Ayanami in the center. I think it's diehards just looking for excuses to edge her out.

They are even big enough to nearly suffocate Shinji when they first meet *extremely funny scene ahead*

...Mari is more of an ANTI-Moe, i.e., a very self-sufficient, bloodthirty young woman with her own, mysterious agenda who spends half of her screentime fighting.

We see a eyepatched asuka in the preview for 3.0 so she may be alive.
It is implied that Shinji manages to save Rei.
And you better start liking Mari because she gets a lot of screen time (much more than asuka).

I know, right? The minor characters have seriously gotten the shaft in the movies. (that's saying nothing of the ordeal with Touji (or lack there of) in 2.0.. :\)

Well, Anno said that Rebuild was to be Eva as "it was entended to be" and the he wanted to correct what the original had done wrong...

As a result, so much naked skin was added to Rebuild 2.0 that even the Otakus are creeped out^^
It also gives the wjole thing that "primal" atmosphere...

Poor Mari... She is as awesome as the other girls, but no one gives her a chance... At first, I was sceptical, too, but I just gave her a chance and watched the movie - and now she shares Rei's position as my second most favourite Character ( the #1 will always be Kaworu)
