Twitter Kills

koutaro-bathing-girl.jpg

Vapid social networking site Twitter claimed the life of another hapless victim with more finality than usual recently when the girl in question accidentally electrocuted herself whilst trying to keep up with her tweets.

The 17-year-old girl in question, a resident of Romania, was using the web-based social networking application in the bath; it seems her Twittering session extended for such a long period of time that the battery of her laptop died.

Rather than interrupt either her bathing or her Twittering, she instead attempted to plug in her laptop to the adapter, but unfortunately did so with wet hands.

It seems it was either the shock from the mains or from subsequently dropping her laptop into the bath which killed her, for she was found by her parents lying lifeless with her laptop by her side.

Via the Austrian Times.

We do not hear what her last Tweet was…

Darwin Award lulz etc, whatever, a 17 year old girl died.
Is it her fault? Obviously. Should she have known better then to do something like that? Obviously.

But how is a teenage girls death, no matter the circumstance, actually hilarious to some of you?

Not complaining about article at all, but 90% of these comments are pretty terrible.

I don't think they are laughing at the girl dying, they are laughing at the way in which she died which involved the twitter program.

Obviously if your going to take the context out of things its not funny. Besides why are you even on this site if it disgusts you to see morals fly out the window?

A 17 year old should know not to use electronics while in the bath tub. This girl was stupid enough to plug her laptop in to an electrical socket with wet hands because she couldn't be bothered to stop using her precious twitter for a few minutes. This girl deserves her darwin award and hopefully this convinces some people not to be so obsessive about these websites (CNN I'm looking at you).

If this type of stuff offends you then I recommend that you stop using the internet because these types of comments are everywhere. You shouldn't expect a bunch of anonymous people to show compassion for every idiot that kills themselves in these utterly ridiculous ways because, as heartless as it sounds, there are a lot of people that believe the world would be a better place without those idiots.

That's why is always better to take something like a portable console or a small -unplugged- laptop in the bath (IF you actually decide to soak with an electric device against all common sense)

Some people... I wonder why she couldn't just relax and wait to finish her bath to use twitter. Gosh, is not like the site is going to run away.

I'm guessing their bathroom didn't have a ground fault interruptor (as I think they're called) It's a device that's mandated in bathrooms in the USA (not sure for Europe). It pretty much keeps you from being grounded while in the bathroom.

The way to die from electrocution is if a high enough amperage flows through your heart, meaning that you've either got one hand on each prong of the plug, or you're grounded and touching a socket.

This is why if you touch live household wires with just one hand, while not grounded, you'll just feel a shock, instead of having your heart stop.

Doesnt RCD disconnect circuit whenever it detects that current is "leaking" somewhere? (If we are even talking about same device)

Don´t know about rest of europe, but here in Finland RCD is mandated in new installations since 1.1.2008

Maybe she was in the bathtub?

If so, then she wouldn't be grounded. Unless the bathtub had water trickling down towards the floor continuously when the charger brick fell into the water.

RCDs are supposed to disconnect, when it detects a ground leakage. Yet, in this case, she probably got shocked from the raw AC voltage of the charger brick.

For two reasons. One is CYA. The other is because making people think about the consequences of their actions, even for minute intervals of time before acting, makes them more aware of them. It isn't that you don't understand the idea already, but that immediate consideration of the consequences of actions will, on average, result in more thoughtful behavior across an aggregate of people than would otherwise.
