Manga in Japan appears synonymous with One Piece in much the same way that manga overseas is a shorthand for saying “Naruto“, if the latest manga sales figures are anything to go by.
The collected Oricon Top 50 figures for manga sales through the first half of 2009 (shown below) give a complete picture of what manga series are dominating Japan of late, with the usual blockbusters of Bleach, Naruto, and (of course) One Piece dominating much of the list.

Sales after May 17 are not included in the list, but including the figures we saw in the June 2009 Oricon charts would put the new One Piece 54 volume at the #4 spot, or possibly even into the top 3 if even more recent sales figures were available.
Another June release, Bleach 39 would also come into this list at around spot #23, making this yet another strong performance for Shonen Jump titles, which also includes One Piece and Naruto.
Gangan, Square-Enix’s own encyclopedia-thick manga magazine, comes in second to Jump with popular titles Full Metal Alchemist and Kuroshitsuji also earning respectable numbers.

Why is that 'good to see'?
Cuz if we were to go buy what animes get made, one would think that girl-laden manga would dominate. While these titles certainly don't shy away from girls, they're mostly titles by and for males. That's good because that's the strength of manga....no matter how good/weird/nice/innovative shoujo is, shounen is bigger and stronger....more boys read comics than girls. It's refreshing because it shows that manga doesn't have to chuck in service like anime does just to sell titles....the fact that there is a whole genre(s) of manga that DO give us that service is just awesome though! Thanx Japan!

One Piece is actually really good. Sadly when 4kids picked it up here, they screwed it up really badly.
This manga really made me cry at the Enies Lobby Arc. It sounds silly to cry for a boat, but Oda somehow, someway, made that arc go great that it had be crying.
Fuck yeah! One Piece! The Skypiea arc was really damn good as well. One Piece has such a great sense of adventure and there isn't a useless character.
The current Arc is MAD HYPE.
The only thing I didn't like about Skypiea is how dramatic it gets whenever someone supposedly dies but doesn't really die. No one dies after getting fatal wounds, yet they still show the little girl crying when someone "disappears".
Well makes sense. The girl, afterall, doesn't know that they didn't die...

Couldn't agree more about Enies Lobby. Merry's moment is still one of the saddest things I have ever read, manga or not.
Really had no idea Pluto was still going. Seemed like it was close to the end last time I had read it(Over a year ago, chapter 40ish). Would have rather seen it end early then drag out(since most of the interesting characters were already dead).

Wow,i didn't expect Nana and FMA is still strong but the sales are bit disappointing nowadays compare to the manga in the 80s and 90s that sells 2m and above.
FMA became popular again thanks to the recent anime.
What can you expect? One Piece still rocks my socks off like it used to, while Naruto is becoming more and more Bleach every day. Let's not even go into Bleach... Have they left Namek yet?

Too bad people miss out on this because of the dirrent animation style. But I recently got my friend hooked on the anime. He went from doubtful to 4/5 stars. The great thing is that the show both make you laugh your ass off and cry a flood of tears at some moment. One Piece is my Death Note...

After 4KIDS (FOX) showed One Piece, I was so freaking pissed at how they presented One Piece. Luckily at the time my Anime Club was showing 4 episodes of One Piece every Friday in the evening at College (and sometimes we even marathoned it for a full day (lol)). We even watched the movies too, which were good as well. America needs more One Piece and honestly everyone in the World need more One Piece!
Sure One Piece is a very long Shonen Show, I will admit. But if you read the manga, like we encouraged a club member, it took him 5 & 1/2 days to get to chapter 450. And guess what...he was the kind of person that thought One Piece was 'Stupid' and 'Freakin' Retarded' show for kids. Now, all he talks about is One Piece (He used to be a Narutard and now he's a OnePiecetard, LMFAO!)

I am not surprised One Piece deserves all the praise it gets. It truly is an original piece of work and unlike such things as bleach and naruto it has a good story working for it. The latest arc for example is simply amazing. The story seems to actually have characters grow (not just one or two but you can see how many of the characters including the villains grow over time through decent character development. The manga works. I think it deserves the praise it gets and although it sometimes gets repetitive (sort of anyways) it is still quite good. Seriously the series grows on you over time.
FMA, Negima!, and Soul Eater are all good manga that should be represented as well as having some of the better plots in manga. These are just my opinion mind you,
