I think the main issue with Alto is that he might have been pretty but he was absolutely weak sauce. I wouldn't call it wimpiness but more so that he couldn't commit, wasn't straightforward, was wishy washy, etc... He knew who he like but he went against his own feelings just because of some manipulative girl pulled his heart strings because of her sickness. No matter how much a girl values kindness in a guy, in matters of the heart, pretty much every girl respects a guy who knows that sometimes it is important to be cruel to be kind. Who would find a guy who behaved in that way to be attractive?
Whereas all the male cast of Gintama are much more attractive than Alto will ever be. Gintoki is lazy as hell but he is one hell of a decent guy... same for Hijikata, Sougo (a little masochistic but from what you can garner from his sister arc and the way he treats gorilla, he is really nice to his love ones), etc.
The arguments against Alto could also be leveled against the majority of this list, however, ESPECIALLY the Gintama cast.

I havne't actually watch/read Prince of Tennis. I mean the name itself kind of kills it for me. I hate guys/girls who are called prince/princess. I just checked out the actual article in Mainichi and some things worth noting (included in the article) to accompany the ranking.
-Hibari won second year in the running.
-6 of the characters in the ranking this year were in the ranking last year too.
-both male and female rankings were results from an online questionnaire.
-a lot of the female characters that ranked are characters from new popular series, whereas characters from long running series ranked highly on the male charts.
So I guess this answers some of the questions ^^. Too bad actual numbers surveyed wasn't included.
Goes to show girls actually think with their heads while the guys think with their lower bodies. And guys just "move on" when new anime come out. Heh, otaku...

Nodame= too little worthy male characters. Only Chiaki and Kuroki are all right.

I am indifferent about Bleach. Ichigo is all right I guess but I don't actually care about Hitsugaya. I can see why some people might find him attractive but he does nothing for me.
p.s. the people who keeps calling Hitsugaya a shota. gintama is a comedy parody anime. gintoki is a samurai who does things half-assed and does anything to earn some cash. and he makes good points about the cliches of anime and in real life.
And he has like, the best voice evar.

It's hard to release hentai for a series like that. It makes sense that fujoshi will have an easier time finding yaoi as well.

BULLSHIT. I've seen the most unlikely characters get so much freaky love from fujoshi just because of the interactions or personality they show within canon. Fujoshi care more about the feelings and anything potentially slashable in the story than the looks.
And men always go for the 2D girls with the best personalities (sarcasm). There are lots of whiny brats, complete bitches or are just in the background who get loved because they look hot and nothing else.

If you haven't noticed, the characters on this list are up there because of their personalities not their looks(OK, maybe except Sebastian). A guy with a God complex isn't exactly on the top of my list. Not to mention he treated Misa pretty terribly(infact, any girls, even his own sister). The only things that are going on for him is his look and intellect. Even L is a better husband than him. And that's saying a lot.

I never got the opportunity to try Hitman Reborn (and it looks like a mammoth task to watch it now), Bleach is meh (used to be so damn good) and Gintama's humor never got into me.
