There are a plethora of malicious genes which are heterozygous recessive in normal individuals. However, these genes are passed down from generations to generations. During conception, and the egg combines with the sperm, genes from the mother and the father are put together. Thus, the baby would have a 25% chance of having whatever problem comes out of that gene, if both the mother and father are heterozygous recessive for it.

Since throughout a specific lineage, the malicious genes are pretty much the same, the closer the relatives, the higher the rate at which these genes would be expressed.
