Black Wii & Classic Controller: Nintendo Rips Off PS2

black-wii.jpg

sony-ps2.jpg

Nintendo has delighted its fans by finally offering the Wii in the same colour as the dark of night and the raven’s wing, but between it and the “Classic Controller Pro”, certain similarities to Sony’s PS2 are noticeable:

ps-wii-controllers.jpg

wii-kuro.jpg

The “kuro” Wii gets its release in August.

Unkind observers might even jibe that the similarities hardly end with the casing, for the Wii has never impressed with its power… Of course, this flattering imitation evidently works both ways.

It's not just a rip-off of the Snes controller, Nintendo actually designed a pad identical to the Playstation one back when Nintendo and Sony were developing a console together. Was a CD add on to the Snes I think!

The PS2's Controller is a rip off of the SNES and the N64 controller and yet those Details was left out. At E3 Sony Copy's Nintendo with there motion controller and yet nothing was said. Sony has Failed this generation the haf to copy people and Microsoft has taken there exclusives stop trying to save Sony They suck and its to late for them to catch up! Good Day Sir.

If most of the gamers weren't so stupid to fall into the category of typical brainless fanboys of whichever company and/or console, they would read this and would think something alonge the lines of: "I hope that they did it right." or even "Does the Wii have any games that use all of those buttons or will it ever have them?". It doesn't matter if they used the same desing for a controller that another company has used or if it was even theirs from the beginning. The only thing that matters is that if it will be useful and if they make good games, regardless of which company it is.

The resemblence is uncanny, but to be fair, every contemporary console gamepad can trace its lineage back to the original NES controller. All Sony gamepads are a direct descendant of the SNES controller, and the Xbox gamepad is the result of highly convergent design, with the only major difference between it and the Dual Shock being the reversal of the D-pad and left stick positions.

Remember, every feature you see on a gamepad today was either invented or first utilized successfully by Nintendo.

And doesn't the classic controller resemble the SNES controller to you guys? Well, it's suppose to...

If only the classic controller had better than 6-bit analog controls. GC controller is much better than it.

Of course just about everything looks like the PS2 controller these days. Not sure why -- the D-pad is horrible and the left stick is awkwardly placed.

Also, from several multiconsole releases I'm going to have to go with the GC/Wii being more powerful than the PS2, or at least easier to work with. Just saying! :P

No, production costs for Wii games are generally lower than that for other consoles, making it appeal to developers, so we can still get sequels to games like Boom Blox even though they flopped a bit in sales.

Which is why you people are unlikely to get a Final Fantasy VII remake on the PS3, the amount of money and time it would take to bring it up to modern standards would be ridiculous.

Sony Playstation was originally to be SNES CD, until Nintendo found out they've been had with the licensing deal. Sony finished the product under their own label, with a minor modifications to the controller (YXBA replaced with geometric symbols)which was pretty much a standard SNES controller with grips added. Wii classic controller pro shape is much closer to original SNES controller than dualshock, following the standard modern controller layout.

Just who ripped who is an interesting question here. It's not as simple as it would seem.
