i still use it to buy used stuff locally and help house hunting. the For Sale / Housing area works as well as ever. the personals work quite well too, but they're only as safe as your discretion allows. wordfilters won't work (see raep, nonconsex, "do my wife without asking", etc) and the sheer glut of desperate personal ads makes moderating it rather impractical. the majority of flagged posts i see are fakes removed by angry guys tired of reading reposted spam from ad sites.

I find pretty intriguing how many people blame the events of this article (and the one about the gang rapists) to the fact that rape eroge was recently banned in Japan.
