I wouldn't call them gross, per se, but anime characters are not representations of (what most would perceive to be) the ideal human figure. I do anime art, and anime proportions tend to be different from human ones. There are many different styles, some which have extremely long limbs and others which have extra short ones (chibi). For the most part, though, the limbs are a lot longer or shorter than a normal humans. Though in the art anime proportions look good, I'm pretty sure that if I were to see someone with an anime character's proportions I probably wouldn't be disgusted, but I probably wouldn't find it very attractive.
