Do not ... underestimate ... the power of moe... Haruhi ain't filler man, I was just speculating the other day how well this episode was written. My second fav ep so far. 2nd season is gonna rocks.
It's not moe that compels me to love this show to the point of mania. It's the escapism in contrast to the logical realism that we established through our lives and the absurdity of a "religion" based around a crazy, fun individual.
The tsundere nature of a goddess is quite compelling...
