2. That's completely possible for him to have a really bad case of writer's block. From the nature, the series is coming close to a head, and that is obviously difficult to write without screwing it up. Or, he could just be taking a break. Writers are human. They need breaks.

Somebody explain to me why Haruhi was popular in the first place. Moe? Quality? What?

I can't claim to be able to explain why it was so popular, but I know why -I- liked it.
First, good characters:
Start with a male lead that I don't want to kill within 5 minutes of the opening sequence (neither the 1-brain-cell "I must be the best"/"never give up" Naruto type, nor the hapless loser about-to-get-a-harem type). Kyon has a sarcastic wit and a jaded view on life, with just a touch of humor and not-quite-dead hopefulness about the world at large that I -never- see in male leads in other shows.
Add the quiet, bookish girl. Not shy, nor embarrassed, nor clumsy, but in fact intelligent, competent and powerful. Doesn't have a lot to say simply because there isn't a need to. Personally, people who constantly talk just to hear themselves talk get on my nerves. Television being the medium it is, that tends to be the sort of person most often seen. You almost never see characters who have a 'presence' without being forced to constantly talk, and having such a person here strongly resonated with me.
Toss in the enthusiastic cheerful girl who can see the humor in life's little stupidities and isn't afraid to laugh at them. Not a cheerful 'genki' girl who's always trying to put up a positive front and make everyone else feel good (usually want to strangle those types), but just someone who is genuinely enjoying herself.
And for good measure, the smarmy, knows-too-much-for-his-own-good 'Yes'-man, who, despite having many traits that other shows would treat as character flaws, is actually a fairly likable guy.
Kyon, Yuki, Tsuruya and Itsuki are the reasons I fell in love with the show. Haruhi I don't so much like, as recognize as a strong central catalyst to keep the world from being boring. Mikuru is the only character I have a tendency to dislike, because she encompasses all those character traits from moe-blob shows that drive me nuts. Still, she's not bad as a sidekick character.
Second, good animation. Despite poor animation not correlating with a poor quality show, or vice versa, good animation still makes the show easier to watch and appreciate.
Third: The final moments of the last episode of the main arc (I'll assume that since you're reading this thread that spoilers are not an issue) where Kyon decides that it's time he told Haruhi about what was going on around her. Making the rational/logical decision there, not treating Haruhi as a child that had to be protected from the truth (despite warnings from the other club members), and just laying it out is so counter to the typical way anime stories handle that issue, it's refreshing. (Not that she believed him, but that's another issue entirely.)
And that's possibly the main thing. People behaving like real people (despite individual peculiarities), and not children or anime tropes. The "Haruhi as God" meme is fun to go along with, but is really only peripheral to the actual enjoyment of the show.

You forgot to say something about K-on... it seems to be standard here if you want to troll naysayers, it works really well.
To be honest, I don't think it was Haruhi people have been naysaying, but rather Kadokawa. Wouldn't know myself since I'm new to the fandom, but that makes the most sense to me.

So... basically KyoAni can only do 1 anime series at a time so they do Haruhi in this fashion... kinda like when they do Munto when Clannad AS still airing....

Too bad Shana sucks and the FMA remake has no atmosphere. Both have epic saving-grace OPs though. /personal opinion. *Trots off to fap to Winry, for I am undeserving of fapping to God-Haruhi as of yet.
Regarding FMA, I think that the lack of "atmosphere" is because they're trying to reach the point where the first series and the manga diverge as soon as possible.
The fast pace is affecting the interactions between the characters and diminishing the impact that some of the critical points of the story caused on the first series run.
I only hope that this changes with the upcoming episodes, because FMA deserves this remake =)

Ok, you asked for a fan-rant:
The reason why I love Haruhi that much, is because I thought it was a special anime.
It just had EVERYTHING.
They hit the right spot with every goddamn detail.
The opening really got me the first time I watched it, I still remember the day I first heard the opening, it got stuck in my head for the whole day (not to mention Hare Hare Yukai).
Then there's this special protagonist, she's the ultimate tsundere character out there. And Kyon is the perfect match. The way Kyoto anime depicted her, is like she's unable to conquer, yet they show tiny lovey-dovey scenes, which makes you urge for more.
Another reason why I love Haruhi is the way how much effort they put into the animation. Just rewatch Live Alive, you won't be seeing such a good animation in another B-anime. This is straight A stuff. Did I also mention the eye for detail, like really designing and giving a name and a seat to EVERY single character in Haruhi's class?
The concept is original too. I love the way how Nagaru Tanigawa applies real scientifical and philosophical theories in his story. I really enjoyed the philosophical touch he applied into Koizumi's character.
A good anime needs the following factors:
A good story, good graphics (style / animation) and it needs to be entertaining.
This anime has it ALL, and you really need to admit that.

- In terms of char. development = shit
- Animation was good, gotta admit
- Plot = stinks (I haven't read the novels yet, but so far I am hating it already)
- Voices, everyone has ok EXCEPT for Aya Hirano. (I feel like I want to shove something down her throat everytime she speaks and Haruhi, as a char, sucks, not my fav. type AT ALL.
- Fav. char was Nagato.
Not that I have much against Kyoto Animation as I liked their Key adaptations and FMP, but I am thinking they are getting overrated.
Conclusion: Haruhi should have stayed in 2006 and stayed dead.
