In most of the Gundam series they where either battery powered or nuclear powered. And we have the technology for both.
In a few rare cases they were diesel powered as well, which may be more economical for all real world application purposes...

I never followed the Gundam series, but I'm guessing, what, they didn't have decent security on the thing, that even a kid could steal it?
