Viewers of Valkyria Chronicles can’t help but notice certain curious similarities between the show’s heroine Alicia Melchiott and a certain Kana Minami, of Minami-ke… Mere coincidence?
Some curious reworking has also been going on: below you see the next episode preview image of “Alicia shock”, and after it the version actually featured.
Fans will doubtless be praying the similarities with Minami-ke end there…

Good I'm not the only one who noticed this.
i noticed the similarities between the two pretty much on the first episode of VC but in the end, i didn't mind much. anime alicia makes the show more funnier, for better or worse but at least it makes it a new experience for those who have played the game already.
The BOSS wins.

I've been playing the game and watching the anime and have noticed that anime Alicia is a lot more erratic. It doesn't bother me all that much though. Interesting to have a source for some of the weirder facial expressions though.At least she's not acting like Chiri-chan though.

I agree with you that Alicia looks better. Kana is cute and all, but Alicia just beats her in everything.
And that's coming from someone who uses her as their avatar...
Just because I use her as my avatar doesn't mean I think she is the best. I just like the look she has in that picture. If it bothers you that much, I can change it to Alicia.

Why do they make the close up shots so ugly in Minami-ke? The rework for VC up there looks a lot better.

I sort of thinking getting Kana's VA to voice Alicia was a mistake. I can't help but see Kana when I hear Alicia talk
well, you can tell how differ the game and animu versions if you're playing the game. animu version tends to make alicia being more funnier. even the manga version isn't that fun.

I love Alicia Melchiott. She's a sexy gal! I don't know if it's the character design or Hair & eyes - but she very watchable. Yet I don't like Kana compared to her.
I am actually downloading the episodes of Valkyria Chronicles right now just cause I like Alicia so much based on these pics.

You're a mistake.
Well they're not all that similar.
I guess when they were working on the anime, halfway through they forgot what they were doing, saw that Inoue Marina was voice acting, and assumed it was Minami-ke.
I would have preferred they mistook it for Zetsubou-sensei.

Haha, occasionally I have noticed Alicia's eyes going a little minami-ke in style. The similarity is something I've noticed for quite some time though, basically since the first images were released (could have sworn that I had said something. Perhaps I merely thought it to myself.
It's all very interesting, though -- I didn't know until today the two characters shared the same voice actress. Uncanny! (Alicia is a hell of a lot more awesome than Kana though.)
Actually, come to think of it, how similarly do they act? From what I've heard Alicia acts a bit differently between the game and this anime -- did they make her more like Kana?
As an aside, it's interesting how A-1 pictures seems to do this a bit -- Kannagi to me took quite several cues from KyoAni at the time, beyond what might be expected from just sharing a director. Think they did a better job of it though then as well.
Also, she isn't a goddamn tsundere.
Alicia is a helluva lot calmer in the game and much more motherly.
And that's what I like about her character in the game. She's a character that I can respect.
