May be if people are rich enough, they can get a 1:1 scale doll of Yui or Mio (if they ever get released) and make even better use of those guitars for decorative purpose.

Anyways, this doesn't surprise me, Japan doing this - but if some store in North America or Europe did this, I would be kind of shocked.
As for effectiveness, I wouldn't be surprised if a few fans went out and bought a guitar because of the show, but I don't think it's worth an entire marketing campaign. Unless its the exact same instruments used in the show... that would draw more attention.

Can someone rewatch ep 1 of K-on! and watch near the end of the anime. What brand Yui brought? She brought a Epiphone Les Paul Standard, Not a Gibson/ Epiphone Guitar is own by Gibson, just Epiphone is cheaper but have some guitar that are the same style as a Gibson. Why do people still say it a Gibson..arghhhh!
Yui bought the guitar in the second episode, and it easily outprices even higher end Epiphone guitars. It matched the price of a Gibson LP Standard. The headstock also says Gibson.

If I got one of the instruments from the show I'd definitely play it rather than just put it on display. I've actually been considering it, too. I've been thinking about learning bass guitar for years (I've played tuba and baritone since I was 8), so even though it'd be a cheaper version, and probably right-handed, I'd try and get a bass that looks like Mio's. ^_^ That is, as long as the K-On boom hasn't affected American music store prices as well...

GIBSONS SUCK BALLS. Seriously their pieces of crap. Most of the japanese "copies" of gibson's guitars exceed them in playability, value and quality. Then again the Gibsons in Japan are usually made by the japanese branch.
Apart from the japanese stuff, US made Gibsons suck. They dont stay in tune, and they just have appaling quality.
