Just on case you want to know, a bass usually has 4 strings, sometimes 5 (especially in Metal).

While its not exactly necessary to know the generall difference, its simply good for one's overall culture...
I will have to beague to differ with those of you who claim the main difference is the number of strings...To my knowlage, the simplest difference between guitar and bass guitar is the pitch range. Bass guitar plays notes an octave or so lower than a regular guitar.
The next, yet smaller and less signifficant difference is the role the instruments play in the band. Typically, bass guitar plays a seemingly supportive role.
As you learned from K-On!- Guitar is a bit more out front and in the spotlight. But, the bass is also critical, taking to account the overall sound and performance.

Bass guitar, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar their are all guitars. Basically almost anything with a fretboard, strings, and body is considered a guitar. So no wrong, just Anon making usual mistakes.

I'm definitely a Mugi man myself, but I can't help being lured to Mio's moe...
People who play southpaw generally annoy me, thank the buddha that she at least uses a lefty guitar as well. That said, I still think any chick who can play the guitar (bass or otherwise) is incredibly hot, thus she is forgiven for her unorthodox playing style. (^_^)
