Supposedly, Onan was commanded by God to have a child by his dead brother's wife (aka, his sister-in-law). During the act, Onan pulled out at the last second and as bob put it 'spilled his seed' out on the ground. And God killed Onan for disobeying HIm.

How Onanism became synonymous for masturbation is beyond me. Onanism should imply the act of pulling out, NOT beating your meat (or Punching The Clown's Nose for the ladies).
