Two boys, aged 17 and 18, face up to a 25 year sentence after being arrested for setting fire to a cat, which was severely burned and had to be euthanised.
The boys took a cat and broke into an empty apartment in Brooklyn, New York. There they doused the cat with barbeque fuel, and set it alight.
The cat was discovered the next day, alive, but veterinarians felt there was nothing that could be done for it, so it was destroyed.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals pursued an investigation into the case, and was apparently connected to the arrest of the duo.
The pair were charged with arson and animal cruelty, as well as other charges, with a potential maximum of 25 years, which would be more than many serious crimes involving human victims. It is not clear what sentence the prosecution will seek.

25 years is going easy. Even I could sit in a cell for 25 years, a monkey could too. Just treating them like zoo animals doesn't count as proper punishment. The 25 years won't be for the cat it will be for the arson charge. They set fire to the cat in an empty apartment, preumably some of the other apartments weren't empty. If you knowlingly set fire to something in a building, particulalrly an occupied one that is arson. If the fire had have caught and burned the building down they would have been up for murder ot attempted murder.

So I presume based on the comments everyone who be postin in here is a vegetarian like myself? I dunno -- just seems like society is incredibly hypocritical at times when it comes to things like this. On one hand we raise and slaughter some animals en-masse, on the other we tame some species then shit bricks should harm occur to them. So in a sense there is a completely artificial division: an animal is either a 'pet' or 'food' in the eyes of most humans. And there is often friction between cultures based on this classification, IE it may be OK to farm and eat animal X in country A, whilst eating X may call for criminal charges in country B.
TL;DR: the two-tier treatment of animals = lulz if you take a look at the big picture.
I'm extremely not a vegetarian and I see nothing wrong with treating some animals as having more rights than others. Really, it's impossible to not kill any living beings through the course of a day. It's just more convenient for humans to create tiers of animals as you put it. Dolphins are cute and intelligent and so we don't want to kill them, but tuna are ugly and stupid fish, and also delicious when done the right way.

There are no double standards here. It's more an "out of sight, out of mind" situation since you don't have to (actively) kill the animal in order to consume it as food. Right or wrong - this is how it works.
People tend to view certain animals as food and certain animals as non-food. It's similar to how we see vegetation - say a carrot, a rose and a pine tree. This remains consistent in the context of any single culture - some people eat dogs, some love them but the two groups are effectively separate and do not influence each other. I've never heard of a society that grows a certain animal for both food and vanity reasons. Unless you happen to have an alien crash in your garage.

I thought neutering was a rather safe operation nowadays :S (well at least in my country) didnt know it'll cost your kitty's life. But cats give birth to lots of kittens each time, and looking at the strays with 3 legs, cropped tails, skins and bones etc, i still think they should be neutered.
