Pope to Africa: “Don’t Use Condoms!”

The Pope has told Africans not to bother with condoms, as they can’t help against Aids or HIV, and just make things worse. Instead he recommends abstinence and “spiritual awakening.”
He claimed in a recently commenced visit to Africa that distributing condoms can’t help control the spread of Aids, and even goes so far as to claim that “they can even increase the problem”.
Instead of worldly latex, the Pope advocates “spiritual and human awakening” to combat the spread of the disease. He did not cite any clinical trials to support this method. The elderly German also urges sexual abstinence.
Tens of millions of Africans are already infected with HIV, so it is fortunate his flock have his wise words to guide them.
This visit comes in the context of increasing numbers of Papists on the continent, having in thirty years apparently increased 5%, to 17% of the African population.
Assuming his followers breed faster than they die from the disease, and that Muslims do not multiply even faster, his advice will doubtless ensure Catholicism’s market share increases in the coming years.
He will also be haranguing regional leaders over their corrupt and ineffective governance, and urging the continent to unite (under Christ, presumably), though he saw fit to start his visit with the weighty matter of condom usage.

It's people like the pope who give religion such a bad reputation...not every Christian is completely retarded, although since those kind of people are the loudest, you'd almost think so.
The Pope is the POPE, though. So at the very least, he is speaking for the opinions of the entire Roman Catholicism. At some point, you have to stop claiming this to be the work of the minority, and accept the fact that the comment from the Pope is the popular opinion of his people.

Obviously the pope is saying that condoms only encourage more sex, which constitutes more risk. He also states that the correct way to solve the problem is not with money (buying condoms for these people), but with "Spiritual and Human Awakening", that is basically teaching the people the benefits of abstinence.
I dislike religion as much as the next atheist, but that is no reason to twist words to this extent.

The pope is _against_ condoms - this is a fact. The Catholic Church is against the use of contraceptives in general. They would prefer total abstinence unless you're having sex with your lawfully wed partner to make babies. What they don't want to realize is that people don't work this way, have never worked this way, and no amount of "spiritual and human awakening" is going to change that.
I kinda disagree with this, I know many many people both athiests and religious that don't want to have sex before marriage. Of course this doesn't work for everyone.
Im sure you'll agree that no sex is the best way to stop the spread of HIV, with using condoms coming a close second. If you ignore for a second for the fact that Catholics are against condoms and pre-marital sex, and just weigh up the pros and cons, obviously less sex would be good for Africa right now. But if you can't stop them having sex, then of course, give them condoms.

But I still stand by that this is written sensationalized and inaccurate because the BBC article never said anything about the pope saying that using condoms was bad. He said distribution (like throwing condoms of trucks) is bad (one can only assume he means that it contributes to moral decay).
While it does not explicitly say that the pope said that condoms are good or bad (just the distribution), it does say that distribution is not the best way to prevent aids. So I think a better title would be "Pope tells Africa abstinence is better than condoms". And in that sense, even the BBC article is slightly sensationalized.

I have mix feelings about this.
I seriously believe that the Pope is wrong to say that condoms won't help decrease the number of AIDS/HIV victims. I mean, it's already been proven that condoms helps in preventing AIDS during sex.
But I also believe that condoms alone won't stop HIV from spreading and I guess this is what the Pope really meant. Africans should learn how to restrain themselves from sexual acts if possible. "Religious guidance", proper education, government programs (that is, if the country has a government): these should teach people how to restrain themselves.
If they just rely on the condom, then nothing will change. AIDS will still spread.

What would be the point in distributing condoms if the people aren't educated? They'll just keep fucking each other, not knowing how to restrain themselves whenever they get horny. They'll put all their trust on the condom and when it isn't available, they'll risk having sex without protection. We are talking about Africa here. Most, if not all, of the continent is poor and I doubt they'll prioritize condoms first before food and water.

Yes, education is important but it doesn't eliminate the need for condoms. Education is a long-term process. It takes time. At the moment distributing condoms is pretty much the only short-term solution the problem.
I'm not saying that Africans should stop having sex until we find a cure for AIDS. What I'm saying is that condoms alone won't stop the spread of AIDS if the people are not educated properly. Yes, distributing condoms would be a short-term solution but they should also start educating the people too.

Condoms are never useless, and Africans will still need them. But there's also a reason why they have a higher rate of HIV/AIDs than other countries, and that's the problem that requires a solution.
Adults who spend most of their year away from their spouse, because one of them is working in a city to earn money so that they won't starve, are likely to be 100% celibate that time? Unlikely. Some use prostitutes, some have a second wife, but humans like having sex too much. Better to be safe than preach abstinence only. Condoms are efficient, even if not a cure nor 100% safe. It's better to rely on condoms as a temporary crutch and work on other things in the meanwhile, than to not and work on other things in the meanwhile.

A lot of people here are displaying ignorance to the Catholic faith. This story makes a lot more sense if you know the background to these people.
Basically the Catholic church views copulation as a 'sacrament' that is: a sacred ceremony with procreation, making babies, being the only point to it. So by using any form of contraception you are defiling the ceremony and committing a mortal sin which means you automatically go to hell forever. Since not going to hell is obviously more important than dying it's better to risk catching AIDS than risk tarnishing your immortal soul, so long as you're married and doing it solely for the purposes of procreation.
I make no apologies for this incredibly fucked up logic.
