Manga in America = Naruto

tsunade-oppai-bikini.jpg

A recent comic and manga best seller list for the USA, compiled by the New York Times, has revealed the embarrassing truth: manga is Naruto.

Of the recent top ten (for early March), only three non-Naruto titles feature, and the top ranks are entirely dominated by the title:

1. Naruto, Vol. 40, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

2. Naruto, Vol. 41, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

3. Naruto, Vol. 38, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

4. Naruto, Vol. 39, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

5. Bleach, Vol. 26, by Tite Kubo. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

6. Naruto, Vol. 37, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

7. Naruto, Vol. 35, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

8. Gentlemen’s Alliance, Vol. 9, by Arina Tanemura.. (VIZ Media, $8.99.)

9. Black Cat, Vol. 19, by Kentaro Yabuki. (VIZ Media, $7.99.)

10. Naruto, Vol. 36, by Masashi Kishimoto. (VIZ Media, $7.95.)

Typical Japanese manga sales for comparison purposes.

The 2ch response is interesting to hear:

“Americans love ninja, don’t they?”

“It’s like the Japanese Harry Potter…”

“Number 1 – Believe it!”

“Japanese fantasy is indeed strong…”

“America’s love of ninja is abnormal.”

“Naruto is vastly overrated overseas…”

“The reason he has blonde hair and blue eyes is for overseas sales.”

“So let’s have a Hollywood live action version then guys…”

“What about One Piece?”

“Wow, amazing. I love Naruto so I’m delighted it’s so popular overseas.”

“No To Love-ru?”

“The love of ninja is the same reason Japanese people love wizards – it’s curiousity towards a different culture.”

“Ninja.
Ninjutsu.
Action.
Simple story.
Protagonist is blonde.
Oppai.”

    Naruto>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>One Piece

One Piece is a neverending "adventure" with shitty character desighns, plot etc.

When is Luffy going to find the legendary "One Piece"? Maybe after another 25 years and 20-30 islands later lol. Hilarious when they find said treasure and hey there is nothing there and Luffy smiling like an idiot saying "ah well it was for the adventure after all". Oda would have trolled so many One Piecetards and fans lol. Seriously Shonen Jump knows a cash cow when it sees one.

wow, i just read all the comments....gah, theres a lotta people w/diff opinions out there. but, i guess ill add a little to the table. yea, i agree w/some of you that naruto was kinda ruined by the ridiculous fans and their hideously huge #'s, but i also think that naruto is disliked on the net not 'cause its mainstream, but cause its obvious that there are so many more anime/manga that are way better that people could kno about. of course, theres also what some people said 'bout the whole eight or so releases in a few months, which happened twice already. the little ten year old naruto fanboys and the emo fangirls who dont read online are probly just so obsessed they need to buy all the manga (courtesy of their ignorance of the fact that the internet has pretty much everything, including better manga and anime ;o) tho, i hafta say the reason im not into naruto as much as i used to be is cause its so friggin' long it gets tiresome and boring seein' the blonde kid say "i fight for my friends! blablabla! friendship = power!" and more crap like that. but, either way, sales show, little american boys want some ninjas right now.

p.s.: dont judge me cause im tryin to sound smart...cause im not ;D

I guess it goes to show how different markets work for both countries. Japan's five fan favorite shounen's didn't include Naruto. Japan's top selling manga series also includes Naruto (bottom of the fifth) but one series that fulfills both criteria as mentioned was the series SLAM DUNK. Even if Slam Dunk did have a 10 year head start (started in 1990), its still amazing considering that it only ran for 6 years and 31 volumes and the anime still gets aired in Asian countries. It filed the gap on the huge basketball fever that hit Asia in the 90's or so. America has always been engrossed on ninjas, more so with the media attempts of it in the 80's and 90's such as American Ninja, Surf Ninjas, TMNT, etc.

In all I can care less since I've gone tired of reading Kishimoto's horrible writing. So I actually do what most wouldn't: just read other shounens and titles in general as opposed to just TALKING about it.

I actually figured this out a really long fucking time ago. Americans don't know shit about manga OR anime. I hear the same three titles (Naruto, Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist) and now, unfortunately, Bleach, being thrown around like their the only Japanese animation on TV. and poor Code Geass just lurks in the background, waiting for some limelight. Anime sucks here.

Around that time earlier in the year naruto manga were being released 3 volumes a month, with 41 (i think) being the last. So if you went to the store to buy one, why not buy all 3? or even all 6 or 9 if you were behind? i can say that i bought all 3 every month as did my friends that still buy manga. by now i bet the selling lists are back to normal.

Naruto is a solid shounen that doesn't deserve all the shit it's getting, but like someone said, most are just cranky cuz their favourite mangas ain't having the same success, but they tend to forget that Naruto is just the launching pad, after they're done with it they will go looking for something else to read.

Not necessarily. The kids around here will only pick up Naruto, Bleach, or Death Note. We don't have big sales of much of anything else, besides Vampire Knight, which seems popular with the girls around here right now (surprise surprise, it has VAMPIRE in the title... just like half of the Young Adult section). We can hardly keep any of the really great manga in the section because they end up getting sent back to the warehouse if I or any of the actual manga readers around here don't buy them (which are few and far between).

What i meant was that once a popular manga like Naruto gets this much attention there's bound to people who goes off looking other stuff after reading it, wether it be on the net or in stores.

I personally know people who's gone from reading Naruto as their first manga (i recommended it to them) to reading/buying Berserk (the best manga out there. Period.).

Like i said, this is just the usual bandwagon-faggotry where the most popular series get shit just because they're the most popular.

If Naruto would've been a less popular manga everyone here would've gone "Oh how nice" etc etc instead of aping around like morons.

The thing is you cannot equate Naruto's success as means to say that its a great work of art. Is it a mainstream media force? Well the figures are telling. JJBA quite honestly is superior to Naruto in story, evolving art and characters. But its not racking up sales in America so does that mean it sucks? It just means America isn't ready for FABULOUS as opposed to the main demographic who eats Naruto like hotcakes.

I'm not pissed that my other favorite titles like Gintama aren't getting any attention. I figured Gintama would be hard to get into being that its very japanese centric (poking on some japanese history with japanese humor) but get past that and its an awesome parody.

Just because its popular doesn't mean its in any form artistic worthy.

I can't help but feel that the sheer volume of comments in here is somewhat telling. Say what you will about the series, this article has roughly double the average number of responses (even after subtracting the first 30 or so, for obvious reasons).

Love it or bandwagon hate it, at least you're all paying attention to it, which I think suits Viz just fine.

I really can't see it as a negative that the series is enjoying such success. After all, as long as manga remains profitable, our shared hobby will in turn remain easily accessible.

Doesn't surprise me at all considering that the bookstore I work at gets about 40 copies of the new volumes of Naruto when they come out. At most, we only get ten volumes of other things (which would be stuff like Rosario Vampire and Vampire Knight, etc).

This isn't a large city like New York or Chicago, either, so it's pretty amazing that we get this many volumes of new manga, even if it is Naruto. They fly right off the shelves, sometimes before we can even get the cart to the section.

I have read every Naruto that's been in US SJ, but i can't remember the last TV episode i saw (started reading the manga b4 i had ever seen the show) and i have zero collected volumes (i have 2 death note volumes and 2 hikaru no go volumes). i have never had *real* ramen, i eat that cup of soup stuff maybe 2x a month and i've been doing that long b4 Naruto. No toys. No video games. No posters/wall scrolls. Is Naruto good? I think so. Is it the best anime/manga thing ever? No, not nearly. Does it deserve all the "OMG WHY DO YOU READ/WATCH SUCH CRAP"? Not surprising, Naruto has been dominating the charts for years now. Unlike most manga in the US, naruto had a widely broadcast ed TV show airing at reasonable hours on CN while the otaku anime is very few and shown too late on AS to gain any fan traction. Bleach also aired on AS and its much lower popularity ranking shows it.
I don't know much about Black Cat, but Gentlemen s' Alliance is a popular shoujo title(my sis reads it) and females are beginning to dominate the industry here, so its not surprising as well.

A big part of this is that, while older people who are into manga prefer a wider variety of genres, they also find it harder to justify spending money on large amounts of it when they have more pressing expenses. Couple that with the ever-crumbling economy, the embarrassment some feel about their hobby, and the sparse availability of many of the better seinen titles in English, and it all adds up to lower sales for all but the stereotypical shounen teen-punk-with-sword-battle-manga. I myself am not embarrassed by it, but I find very few titles worth spending on in the English manga market. Most of the titles I am fanatical about have yet to hit American shores, and for many of them it's unlikely they ever will. The market needs to diversify beyond juvenile fight-of-the-week-part-42, mindless-moe, and tentacle rape or what little spare cash I have is staying in the bank. Until then I'll stick to my scanlations where I can at least find some diversity and depth, handled with care by people who love it for people who love it.

Kinda sad considering how much is actually out there on the shelves besides Naruto. I'm in the US and I've never so much as seen an entire episode or opened up a Naruto manga, and I'm quite content with that. I prefer to read xxxHolic and Welcome to the N.H.K. among many other manga, and watch a large variety of anime like probably most everyone here. Maybe it's deserving of some of it's success, but I think people need to sample other things and open their minds a bit more to diversity.

yes.. that is what the interwebs are for.... just a taste.. and then HOPEFULLY... it will become an anime and THEN funimation/tokyopop or some fagpublisher picks it up to translate in tankoubon form.

what i don't get is the prolific introduction on stupid shoujo/yaoi titles by viz and tokyopop... ( i confess though that Vampire doll is kinda nice.... as is Vampire knight etc etc .. oh shi-)

People in the US are so simple minded, this is just one of numerous proofs about it.

And it is the same reason why DBZ was so popular before Naruto.

Those people can't be bothered reading something that would make their brain work for more than simple perception.

    HELL,

Pity that people forgot about BioShock already... I do agree that many young Americans are morons (I highly agree with that, and not just the preteens, but even those in their early 30s [looks at web2.0 fanatics]), but come on. You gotta give the country a bigger break than that. Maybe after the Obama administration, the country will be so terrible that your claim will be nothing but justifiable.

After all, it's not like Naruto is popular in Japan or anything...

You broke my sarcasm meter again, Artefact... It can only be pegged so many times a day.

Hmmmm....I have a real life experienced to share.

I once befriended a girl at the orientation at my current college. We talk with each other always until one time I was listening to J-pop songs while doing my work.

She said, "Ewwww....You like Japanese things? You must be an otaku!"

Then we never talk as much as before. But one day I saw her watching Naruto on her laptop. So does that make her an otaku too?

Hypocrites, or so mainstream I'd say XD

lol...best off having her as only a friend...with such a hypocritically narrow view of things...she said "otaku"? Doesn't that make her worse? Though I guess the word otaku could be gaining prevalence amongst the boorish commoners. Although she could have been giving "something Japanese" a try...

You may want to mention the "best seller list for the USA" is in fact the New York Times Best Seller list, one of the most recognized by US publishers:

    http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/13/graphic-books-best-seller-lists/

I'm surprised to see so many USD$7.95 manga. They are rarely that cheap when I buy, even three to four dollars more, though I suppose it has something to do with titles that have extra long volumes.

I believe Fruit Basket also made it to top 100 on New York Times Best Seller list has it not?

They've started keeping track relatively recently I believe. Another service was tracking manga, comics, etc before this year.

Americans need to see the good stuff... I pity them. But I guess the good stuff doesn't make as much profit as Naruto. Sooner of later its gonna be like DBZ with characters that don't die, and endless, repetitive combat scenes - all with Naruto's melodrama in between.

Honestly, I think that's a lot better than DBZ or Pokemon being at the top, like they used to be. At least American kids are moving forward with the times. A little.

Let's not forget, too, that a ton of "reading" with kids is influenced by what they are "viewing". The most widely-accessible station for viewing anime in America is Cartoon Network, which is a huge Naruto and Bleach pimp. Same for One Piece, from time to time.

If Anime Network or something like it - that specializes in ONLY anime - became a part of the basic/standard cable in America (like Cartoon Network is), then you'd see American manga "reading" tastes start to rapidly change.

Well, that's quite a boring list. I really hope to see more titles of other mangas to make it there. I'm getting tired of all the Narutos. Where is Rosario+Vampire? Shana? Little Busters? Hayate the Combat Butler? Kurokami? Toradora?

    "Ninja.
    Ninjutsu.
    Action.
    Simple story.
    Protagonist is blonde.
    Oppai.”

Hmm yes, yes. To make it short we can just say they like blonde, and oppai.

I think people thinking his hair color is what make american interested in Naruto is totally stupid. Again, I believe people say anything sometime just to justify something they don't accept or understand.
