Mongolian yokozuna Asashoryu recently debuted as a fashion model, and a cosplayer to boot, waddling down the catwalk in support of Fanta sales.
In the event, called Shibuya Girls Collection, and held at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Asashoryu modeled a typical Prussian cadet uniform, the standard for Japanese boys, much to the delight of the 20,000 crowd, most of them female teenagers.
Dancing on stage with the other models, his task of modeling a school uniform is a marketing move for Fanta, as this sort of material features in their Japanese line of TV commercials. He appears as “Fantaro (13)”:
Asashoryu was clearly excited with the attention, stating “this tension is kind of new to me”.
But whilst he is happy with his new role, some sports newspapers are clearly not, lambasting him after he skipped training for the upcoming Spring Grand Sumo tournament.Taking large amounts of money to promote soft drinks is of course ok.
The Fanta commercials themselves have always been associated with school; this one parodies the old Japanese drama series, Sannen B-gumi Kinpachi-sensei:

Ahh Fanta, you kookie bastards.
gotta love those fanta CMs
Old fanta is so funny, I wish they would play that funny ad in my country.
I also miss fanta with different fruit tastes too. I can only get 1 standard fanta taste over here.
yeah, in Malaysia last time we got strawberry, grape, fruit. No peach, tropical fruits or sweaty flavour.
What did the principle said about the lost time at the last old fanta ad?
I think he said the students have to kick 1 billion goals to make up for the lost time so all the students fainted or something.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Pretty cool commercials for Nazi pop. But don't the backgrounds in those commercials look kinda weird? They remind me of watching Battle Royale though, lol
Mmmmmmmm..... Fanta. *drools*
Ahaha~ Who said fatty can't be a model? He is cool~
>.<
all of those spots are clearly full of almighty win
The DJ one was hilarious. Wonder who the girl is though.
*nods*
When he tells the girl she gave the wrong answer.. hilarious.
yeah, i too want to know who is the girl with the dj considering she will be like in her 40s by now
I dont even know what this article is about, but the fanta commercials are uber rofl XD
"Taking large amounts of money to promote soft drinks is of course ok."
Do I sense some sarcasm here? Correct me if I'm wrong, but has not it always been acceptable to do such in Japan? In fact, if memory serves many American Actors/Actresses make the trans-pacific trip to do advertisements in Japan.
They even said so on TV

Wow, that's on TV AND the internet, it must be like...double true.
wanna fanta? mmm hmm.
Fuck yes.
That old Fanta commercial at the bottom has always cracked me up. It probably helps if you're a jidaigeki/sengoku/edo era fan though.
Always loved these commercials.
Here's a subbed version of the bottom compilation, for any of you curious as to what they're saying who don't happen to speak Japanese (such as myself): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2hQGOOR5g0& [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2hQGOOR5g0&]
I've always loved it too, it's too funny

THAT GUY IS AWESOME.
This guy's perfect for a live action Air Gear. xD

I like how I read the title as "Shrimp Asashoryu".
