Korean Host Slammed for Pre-Show Plastic Surgery

solbi-surgical-idol.jpg

Solbi (솔비), host of the popular Korean show Music Core, has been roundly criticized by fans for having the audacity to show up too soon after plastic surgery.

In the latest airing of Music Core, Solbi appeared with a face that was clearly swollen; MBC message boards were flooded with negative messages, with many “fans” comparing her to a steamed dumpling that had swollen in size.

solbi02.jpg

Fans soon deduced that the puffiness was the result of plastic surgery, forcing the host/singer to own up to having undergone a surgical procedure.

Solbi admitted to having had surgery on her eyes some days prior to the show; her procedure aimed to make her eyes look wider by making incisions in the inner corners of her eyes.

Apparently, Solbi felt that the surgery did not change her looks enough to be noticed, and so opted to go ahead with the show.

She evidently miscalculated, as sharp-eyed Korean fans complained that “the modification you should have had is for face swelling” or “you are disappointingly plastic.”

Such Internet rhetoric is common in Korea, with such scathing vitriol at times responsible for everything from hunger strikes, to suicides and early retirements from show business.

And whilst getting plastic surgery is relatively common among Korean females, and endemic amongst celebrities, candidly admitting to having appearance enhancing surgery is still taboo…

Via Allkpop.

One wonders why Solbi ever considered plastic surgery in the first place given that even prior to the surgery, she was not unattractive…

If you call that kind of korean netizen comment vitriolic, you should see the Starcraft fans. When KeSPA disqualified an old-school player twice in the same match, the internet was literally ablaze.

Why do people automatically think, that just because an Asian wants eyelid surgery, that they are trying to achieve Western features?

Some Asians are born with a double lidded, so what do you call them?

its the western arrogance, are you new to the world? some white people think everything is about them.

Actually no, it is the Asian lack of self-esteem (or I guess just Vietnamese).

Ok, this post will sound like a troll post but it is factual. Basically, I am average looking for an Asian male, can get girls just fine, made nearly 6 figures before quitting to do a Ph.D., know 4 languages, not exactly lithe but quite strong (can bench press 250lbs), etc etc.

And my parents absolutely want me to marry a white girl even if I have to pay her. Now, I have absolutely nothing against white girls, as my closest friend on Earth is a Caucasian guy, but wtf, that comment turned me off from the whole idea of dating white girls...

So no, I believe that the idea of "wanting to be white" did not start from arrogant white people, but rather from people of the old Asian generations.

I dunno, I think she's (still) cute with a chubby face. If I have to embark on a quest to save her from suicide-driving Internet comments, and if said quest involves bedding her at the end, it's a chance I'm willing to take.

Of which can you really say that the anime characters hardly ever really look "Japanese"? Best example of someone that looks Japanese in anime is Kanuka Clancy from Patlabor...and she's supposed to be half Japanese...

I don't understand why so many people are against plastic surgeries. If the outcome is better and (mostly) undetectable(unfortunately on many occasions it's worse), I don't see a reason to bitch.

I would agree, if I'd ever seen a surgically altered face that looked better than a natural one. The line between beautiful and plastic is a fine one, and I've yet to see surgery fall on the former side of it. Rampant photoshopping does little to help clear things up.

And it is very strange to hear that on an anime related site. All anime characters are FAKE.

I've known girls who use no make up and are 100% likely to have had no plastic surgery, and they're still very quite attractive.

Unfortunately, they're also very boyish and I question their sexuality.

Good luck finding a professional model ANYWHERE that isn't a straight-up liar.

Also, good luck finding, dating and sleeping with any woman that doesn't have a pound of MAKEUP on at any given time.

Make-up, surgery, hair gel, contacts....HUMAN BEINGS NEED THIS.

Because humanity is a technological species. We're genetically dependant on our tools and our ART.
Some of that art we just happen to WEAR.

i do recommend to you, xavi, to take another look at her before the operation.

it's not like we're comparing a fake beauty to a ugly pig, we're talking about a real beauty (or at least, with just make up), going for surgery FOR WHAT ? that i cannot understand.
she could have asked me, i could have banged her before. with a smile, even.

Because many humans look for whatever avenue they can exploit to place themselves higher in a social hierarchy, and requiring or cosmetic surgery can be seen as a form of weakness.

It's also common in China and, presumably, Japan. Not just celebs, but among the affluent middle-class as well.

Western-style "big eyes" are believed to be cute in popular perception.
