Rising actress Jang Ja-yeon, who was currently starring in the Korean drama adaptation of  Hana Yori Dango (Boys over Flowers), was recently found to have committed suicide at her home in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province.

Jang’s death marks the third celebrity suicide to hit the Korean entertainment industry in the past 6 months.

Police said that the 27-year-old actress apparently hanged herself from a stairway railing and was discovered by her sister.

The Korean entertainment business is known to be tough on its stars.

Internet-based personal attacks have been particularly nasty. Rabid Korean netizens figured prominently in fueling the suicide of actress Choi Jin-sil last October.

jangjayeon03.jpg

Jang had been suffering from depression and had undergone medical treatment for it during the past year. Jang was also known to have had trouble with her current management agency. The actress had complained about the overwhelming stress to her sister during a phone call earlier that afternoon.

Jang’s suicide is a tragic end to her rising stardom. After her public debut in 2006 in a TV commercial, Jang rose to stardom playing Sunny, one of the three mean girls in Boys over Flowers. With two upcoming movies this year, Jang was poised for a breakthrough year.

It's not just the internet. In Korea, this shit spills into real life- fans of one person will actually attack other celebrities if they think there's been some insult, or if they feel betrayed (eg a male singer getting a girlfriend causes all the female fans to go nuts and attack them).

There are some cases where japanese people committed suicide bcoz they felt guilty for causing death of many people (like flight 123).

i would consider that as different reason to kill yourself. you owe apologies to hundred of lives, and if you feel that by killing yourself will show a sincere apology...so be it, you are entitle for your own opinion
(but i still prefer to live carry your sins for the rest of your life)

As somebody who is very familiar with the internet/entertainment industry/real life thing in Korea let me say this:

Though it sounds pretty dumb to be affected by stuff that fans/anti-fans write up online, you need to have in consideration the size of Korea. Korea (223,170 km2) is smaller than California (423,970 km2), basically said, it is a lot smaller than USA. Online is not the problem in itself, it is the people who flame online and then take it offline and, next thing you know, your neighbor is talking crap about you.

It is like, a person in Pusan (330 km away form Seoul) says that he read XXX thing online about this actress and tells his best friend about. Of course, his best friend believes him (come on, they are friends) then he proceeds to tell his wife about it. Then the wife tell her brother. Then the brother... etc. In no time you will see the rumor spread around in most places in Korea. Does somebody care to check if it is true or not?

Don't we all love to elaborate our own version of whatever rumor we hear and, sometimes, we make it even bigger? (before you deny this, think about the rumors of Haruhi season 2 or XXX series XXX season).

Anyway, I find it hard to type out everything I know about this, can't find the proper way to explain it. Hopefully the above helps a little, if not and you wish to know more about this, find me online. I don't hide nor I run, plus, I am pretty easy to find ^_^v

My problem with this is that haters are everywhere. When someone becomes successful, haters become inevitable and will spread bad rumors around.

This actually happened to me recently, from MIT to 100000 hits. But I learned that haters are only telling you that you're on the right track to success, or they wouldn't be there spreading mean rumors about you.

So it's like, bring on the haters. >:D

She had a good future, but she had lack of foresight.

I don't think the internet was to blame. It has to be something else that drove her to insanity. I blame her family for being unssuportive enough or her friends who never took her seriously.

But she has herself to blame for hanging herself; causing so much grief and pain just to prove a point or to please others. She lived a life to please others, and that is what actors are supposed to do, no matter how unfortunate that sounds.

"Jang had been suffering from depression and had undergone medical treatment for it during the past year."

Maybe some of you want to try out the depression thing first and then see how you feel, before posting comments.

Depression is a perception changing disorder that alters your values, your self-worth, and your enjoyment of every day things to the point that for some people life isn't worth it. No amount of 'pull yourself together', 'it's all in your mind', or any other dismissive comments, will make any difference and it's up to supportive counselling therapies, and/or medication and rest to help. It's probable this poor girl only got the meds and maybe some therapy, but she didn't get the rest....

This, my friends so why psychology is crucial. Like it or not, what's in our heads and emotions (EQ) tend to make what we are today and tomorrow. Moreso, since the artists tend to be very sensitive people. The very same gift they have that enables them to act emphatically with their character also can be weapon of their own destruction.

    RIP.
