Tetsuwan Birdy Decode: 2 Supreme Quality Attained

tetsuwan-birdy-epic-fail-1.jpg

Sexy acrobatic oppai anime Tetsuwan Birdy Decode: 2 has astonished fans by reaching a new level of animation quality. The seventh episode looks set to enter legend as a supreme expression of production quality taken to extremes:

Some are wondering whether DVD revisions will alter this quality to less legendary levels; there is some doubt about whether they will bother…

At least we still have some delectable images of the characters? As well as visually pleasing cosplay

I suspect the same, quality normally is pretty damn good.. can only imagine this to be intended somehow.. like as said above, trying to recall a memory.

    If it isn't..

It is indeed a memory scene, so I actually think it was intended to look like that, and of course it looks better animated than in still images.

Sure, go ahead. It's your loss. And actually, this is one of the reasons many animation critics still attest anime artistic value instead of just deeming it over-glorified animated porn for pedophiles.

    Comment by Xavi
    23:46 21/02/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Sure you can call me shallow but the main reason for me to watch anime (because in the first place I don't know about the story) is the quality of drawing/animation of the title.

I must admit that I've fallen victim to many series that had wonderful art but crappy story. Ideally I would watch only anime titles with good artistic value and terrific scenarios, but we all know how rare this is.

In the meantime I can only "judge a book by its cover" as a mean to pick a series, because reviews and critics tend to vastly disagree with my opinion.

    00:09 22/02/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

As far as I can tell, the show also has plenty of great (and more "conventional") art apart from that. Maybe you should just give it a try. I know I will as soon as I catch up on other shows.

    Comment by Shuu
    00:25 22/02/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Just reread my first reply and realized that maybe I should have been a bit clearer.

Good art is as important to me as decent characters and a good story. I won't be able to fully enjoy an anime if the art sucks. What I was trying to say is that those screens don't really tell anything about the visual quality of the show. I don't know if you have watched the clip, but it doesn't look nearly as bad in motion. Quite the contrary IMO. But regardless of whether you like this particular animation style or not, look at a few screen caps of other scenes and you'll see it's not representative of the show's overall animation style. But those super-fluid sequences is what convinces western animation critics (note that I wrote animation critics), since usually they whine about static character stills with only the lips moving and such.

The history of this anime is pretty good, that is the only scene that has that kind of animation, in that scene birdy´s mind is lost and Tsutomu is triying to get in contact with her. I´ve seen the anime and only in some battles the animation goes this bad, all the rest of the history is pretty good.

    Comment by Shuu
    21:55 21/02/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Well, those scenes feature some impressively fluid animation, I'm 99% certain this was a deliberate artistic choice. Anyone who goes "OMG epic QUALITY lolz!!!!111" obviously hasn't watched the clip. Many anime use similar style in similar contexts. FLCL anyone? Aquarion ep19?, Macross Frontier ep10? I guess I could recall many more if I tried...

I enjoyed these scenes very much. I really want to watch Birdy Decode now.

LOL, you read my mind on the FLCL part. I was almost gonna say the same thing before I read this comment. Never watched this anime before, but the animation does look okay (as well as the storyline) so like few have said already, maybe it was done on purpose?

But still, its nowhere near as bad as Akikan right?

It's interesting that you mention Macross F 10 here. The scene featured in the video from 0:24 to 1:10, which most of the shots above are coming from, was animated by Niho Tomoyuki, who incidently was responsible for the end fight in said MacF episode.

As for the entry, true fail as expected from a site like sankakucomplex. Animation is lost on the average anime fan who wants stillframes of naked female 2d characters with voice-over by Tanaka or Kugimiya Rie.

I think it's not 'just because' it's a memory sequence, those are parts of memory that is the most fuzzy to little Birdy (she even tried to deny that).

However, despite knowing it, I did twitch my eye a bit while watching the anime. I do hope to see it in a more normal style, it's going to look awesome.

The "low quality" scene here, as well as the similar end fight in the series, feature what seem to be hand-drawn backgrounds. The camera moves *through* complicated scenes, which is challenging to animate. Most of the time in animation the camera is restricted to panning because then you can use a static background.

It seems clear that the "quality" was a deliberate choice: given a fixed budget, they chose to downres the image quality to allow themselves time to animate the backgrounds. Whether or not the result works for you or not is a matter of personal taste, but definitely watch the video (rather than just look at the still frames) before making a decision. (Honestly, the series' end fight works much better, imo.)
