Do they have pillows like that with boobs sticking out of them and other body textures? That'd be alot more satisfying wouldn't you think?

I like how some people say this guy has never gotten laid/has no life... even though he has a girlfriend and a respectable job in the finance industry (which is how he has been able to obtain all this shit).

Who wouldn't be? I am by far no psychologist, but we usually grow up being taught that deviance and success are mutually incompatible. This is the same here in the West as in Japan, where otaku are considered social rejects after all.

A lot of us are rather introverted by nature, thus lonely. The belief goes that only those with nothing/nobody else - social life, significant others... - holding them back can indulge in otakuism to its most hardcore degree.

More or less consciously, we often think that real-life happiness and otakudom are antagonistic concepts. Remember Densha Otoko "graduating" from otakudom to join the "paradise of couples"? That's exactly what I mean.

Thus, since Melon-pan exhibits a disturbing degree of deviance, he has to be some no-life hikikomori, right? Well, no. He indeed holds a respectable and apparently well-paying job, which enables him to import otaku goods from Japan by the crate. He seems to have at least some friends. It is probable that he says the truth about finding a girlfriend, considering he's been posting how he longed for one every now and then (being a fellow confederate, I can confirm it is no small feat. Switzerland has a ... "cramped" dating scene).

The guy seems rather happy with his life while garnering the reputation of a disturbingly hardcore ota. The sheer dissonance between this and our taught principles is enough to make us feel bad.

Add to this the fact that he has the potential to make people jealous. Not only for his collection, not only because of rather daring feats (2x score multiplier for doing so in stuck-up Switzerland), but simply because he appears to have the best of both worlds - living in some kind of otaku's wild dream of having a roomful of figurines, video games and paraphernalia *and* in the real world, as a productive and thus hopefully-respected member of society. The otakuness without too much of the roneriness, how's that sound?

Denial is a good reaction against the very idea somebody like Melon-pan exists. We probably all have heard of otaku somehow managing well in real life (Danny Choo, anybody?), but think deep down that this means they had to compromise on their otakuism to do so. Our swiss guy here somehow manages to impress, maybe even surpass most of us in both otaku and IRL matters. This is irritating.

On the flip side, I do not believe everything is as nice in this guy's life as some might think. For one, he probably wasn't always in such a, huh, "graceful" state. He mentioned at least once that he used to be a hikikomori and I would fully believe that, both because this would explain his hardcore otakuism and because the conformist society of switzerland can indeed produce people resembling hikikomoris. Somebody in my family was one for several years.

Melon-pan looks like one of those that somehow decided to snap out of it. At least partially. This could explain his apparent shameless/carelessness with his antics - as the one ex-hiki I know puts it, when you've shut yourself out of society for years and somehow still decide to get out in the end, you learn not to care so much about what the others think of you.

I only say "partially" snapped out of it in the case of MP because he still seems to live in a world remote from reality. Most of the time. This shows in the rather weird manner he writes his blog posts. How much of this is a role he plays, though, is unclear.

Overall, that's an interesting specimen we've got ourselves here...

    Good read.

Though somewhat antithetical to your narrative's theme, I would like to add that it's not unreasonable to label some brands of social isolation as generally positive.

Such as isolating one's self in order to focus on learning a field, or researching/working on a particularly involving project.

People who can balance it all are hard to visualize, but must exist.

    Good on them I suppose.

Alright, this is beyond my comprehension.

Dakimakura is fucking awesome, but to a certain degree. Melonpan just goes a bit overboard.

I own Dakimakura myself, in fact i bought a recent issue of G's Festival today with an all new Feena Fam Earthlight Dakimakura included, but there is no way in hell i'll buy the pillows, stuff them into my Dakimakura, toss them on my bed and make out with them.

I either keep mine in mint condition or hang them on my walls. That way the guests won't be as creeped out as they should be.

    Sorry, that's my 2 cents.

Aren't posters for the 'hanging on wall' part? Always thought of Dakimakura as a Lovepillow. A pillow you can make love to. Did I get the wrong idea?

Good timing. I was thinking of getting a dakimakura and I wanted some advice/opinions.

    Here's the one I'm gonna get: http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/catalogmgr/=cMlgVKysRkYxC7JFi/browse/item/80601/4/153/100

It's a little smaller but I think it'll be sufficient. Oh and also thanks to Michio's recommendation, I also found a Shana dakimakura on Ebay for $14.95, but sadly I won't be getting that since I'm already spending all my money on other stuff at rightstuf.

I wanna say how creepy Melonpan is, but I'd probably do that too(except maybe not quite so extreme). It looks....enjoyable.

    I see a botan plushie.

    Yeah d00d.

That's not a Dakimakura at all.

Dakimakura is not licensed in the states. And there sure as hell isn't a Dakimakura for Haruhi Suzumiya No Yutsuu.

Plus you misunderstood. Dakimakura only consist of the sheet itself. The pillow is sold seperately.

eBay is your best choice but even eBay has bootleg products and such.

Try to locate a Japanese bookstore near you and see if they stock limited edition magazines that come with Dakimakura.

Or go to your closest biggest Anime convention.

    Wow....just....wow.
That's not even an actual dakimakura; just an image from a poster in megami magazine plastered onto a pillow case.

tl;dr That's honestly pretty shitty (even for the price).

Most sellers on ebay can actually make a custom dakimakura for cheap as long as you provide an image that's high resolution enough. And considering how expensive "official" dakimakuras are that might be the way to go.

Yes DEFINITELY go for the Shana one if you're looking to buy a dakimakura now.

Unless the shipping is absolutely outrageous, you're right it's too good of a deal to pass up.

I'd recommend the Shana ones though. Even though they are cheap on Ebay, they are official merchandise regardless.

Well I used to know a few but they've closed down by now.

Any seller selling a "hugging pillow case",etc for $30 and under is fair game. Just message them and ask if they can make custom dakimakuras (which is what most of their merchandise is, if they're selling cheap). More than likely they'll be able to.

    @Bastille
The Shana one I found ($14.95) does indeed look like official merchandise but for the price that's hard to believe.

So you think the guy selling shana would be alright? He's got 100% feedback and I noticed he also has a fate dakimakura for $20. I might just get the fate one. The price makes me suspicious but i don't know, seems too good to pass up.

What makes me suspicious to them being official is that they suddenly appeared on Ebay out of the blue back when I was in a massive Shana buying phase. I still own them regardless, but the chances of them being 100% authentic is unlikely. Can't really complain though. They are made well enough, and look the exact same. There is a chance they suddenly found a massive supply of them, or produced a bunch more, but eh. Regardless, they get the job done for someone who sadly was without credit card, or the knowledge of how to order things from Japan back when they were actually being made.

If you're looking for entry level dakimakura though, they are a good choice. Another reason they are cheap as well is because they are single sided. Compared to say the $200 I'm paying for http://www.w-canvas.com/special/clock_hearts/index.html though that's also because the CAD exchange rate is a pain in the ass atm.
