The DVD version of Code Geass R2 episode 18 (volume 7) has been roundly hailed by fans as an exemplary case of a DVD release being done right – the episode brings the animation quality up to a uniformly high level, where previously some doubts were in evidence amongst fans as to the quality.
The comparison above, courtesy of 2ch, shows the changes in excruciating detail.
These have been selected such as to highlight the changes in the most problematic scenes – clearly it is not wholly representative. These are all from episode 18; apparently 17 had no such severe revisions. Mecha designs were apparently all unchanged.
Close examination will reveal all manner of subtle changes.
Some characters even received a complete face-lift:
There were certainly plenty of problematic scenes in the original episodes, though it was hardly a disaster.
All that fans have been deprived of in the Geass DVD releases are the previously anticipated ecchi service scenes…

Those are some revisions!
I wonder what exactly prompted the change, that required a lot of reanimating many of scenes, more than simple computer touchups.
Rather, I wonder why they animated it in a lesser quality style initially?
To be honest I would not have noticed until the comparison photos were made.
Overall, the animation of Code Geass impressed me anyway, it was refreshing and a bit unusual, definitely smelling of CLAMP.
But I guess there was room for improvement yet.
The lower quality means they can meet broadcast deadlines with a show that is good enough for people to watch and be interested in. Then when they release it on DVD, as an incentive to purchase something that many people have probably already downloaded, they give the quality a boost, thus gaining sales. It's an excellent way to keep up in the face of peer to peer sharing.
oh come on japan! It's not codegeass without the funny faces!
Argh, I hate spoilers! *facepalm.jpg*
Currently trying to catch up on Code Geass, and I don't know shit about R2 yet. To me the DVD version looks a lot better than the TV version.
*waits for fansubs of the DVD version*
can't say there was anything wrong with the way it was.
They look less asian
Well, some of them aren't even supposed to be Asian.
quite the contrary; the white guy with blonde hair gained chinky eyes with this revision. massive fail imho, and i'm a chink :(
Now with slightly less FABULOUS and 60% sharper CHIN
CLAMP un-clamped.
I dun like the ones on the right, they lose the style almost completely.
Can they revise the whole damn show in its entirety. That ending sucked balls.
QUALITY in my Code Geass. Lies.
Arg - someone just upload and sub the DVDs
So which one is the new one? I can't really tell.
Just look for the fatter faces
the one with more hair detail, more facial shadows, and overall thicker lines.
lol @ 3rd from the bottom on the right
Either is acceptable.
but now we have 2 luluface.jpgs
luluface 2.0?
That's what we call.. MASSIVE Revision. Complete face-lift gino is lol. Also, need bigger version of Lelouch's Joker Face. brb ordering the DVDs.
Those are some pretty big improvements. Is it just this episode or all others have been revamped like this to? I might have to rewatch with the dvd vers of Geass if majority of the eps went up as much quality as this.
All the episodes have been revised. The broadcast version of any anime show is just a infomercial to sell the DVD.
When I visited Sunrise, I got to see revised scenes like in the article above but in paper form. Though it wasn't from R2, you can tell that some artist couldn't follow the model sheets.
if the left is the revised version then that means theyve either
a. reduced karins boobs or
b. made her a tighter suit thus packing it in nice n firm
Maybe just corrected perspective or corrected anatomy so that she doesn't have to be a mutant human.
wait did they make kallens boobs even bigger?
In the fifth photo down on the right, they actually look smaller.
very keen observation.I've seen that one too.See also 10th and 16th photo on your left.
What a bright way to attract sales...
you mean fabulous way to attract sales
So the ones on the left are the DVD versions right...?
It better be, since I like the left better, isn't it usually the 'better' version on the right though?
Whoever did the comparison fails anyways, so many examples.. yet not a single shot of C.C. :(
That's because C.C. is perfect, and you can't improve that.
It does look as if they lavished attention on her from the start. After all, she belongs to Pizza Hut.
Remember that in Japan you often "read" from right to left. Putting the better/newer version on the left side makes sense.
Only vertical text might be read right to left. Horizontal text is read left to right.
The right version (whatever they are) suck
yeah, but to be honest, some of it looks worst
then you need your eyes checked
????
dvd version on the left side, they all look better to me
unfortunately, some of the pictures on the left show people who don't even look like people anymore; the renderings go from appalling to 'BLURGH' .
Uh, no, i'd say most of those changes in the first picture is for the worse. Maybe its you who needs glasses.
WTF at Spinzaku at the right.
Is he doing his Shinji impression:
"I mustn't run away, I mustn't... I mean... I must live!"
Let the hunt for the rips begin!
Seriously though, I can tell that there is a TON of detail added. Sadly, haven't been seeing any rips of the R2 DVD version, unlike season 1. Where oh where can they be...
Idk I would have thought gg fansubs would have released it with the DVD quality but I rushed and saw the episodes before actually downloading them so I haven't seen if they are DVD or original. Anyone confirm?
Is it only me that doesn't like some of the changes?
ie,Lelouch's face was more evil, now it seems like he has suddenly gaind 20 pounds...
thats like, a good thing considering he was designed by CLAMP.
backwards
Glad I never watched this...But Iam so glad that they made the girls.
Watch Bandai fuck up and release the TV version and not the DVD version.
I'm actually suprised that someone can tell which version is supposed to be the better one...
All the hair is become not mess and the face is become younger and handsome especially the Schneizel El Britannia but some of the face is become quite funny
I love how 90% of the animation in this show is close up shots of the characters faces
oh sunrise...
Cool story, bro.
You never actually saw the show, did you.
>_>
But it looks like they altered the facial expressions a little bit.
Aren't they basically changing the character interaction when they do that?
Not that anyone here watches anime for those reasons....j/k.
No, actually I'm not kidding. Some people here are pretty fucking dense.
I don't know about you, but I watch anime for entertainment purposes. I have too much character interaction in real life to bother putting it up on some golden pedestal.
Also, how the hell is the character interaction going to change by them improving their animation?
I think the dense one here, Sir, is you.
In general, the characters seem more distressed and realistic in the DVD version.
Rolo is sadder
Kallen is more confident
Suzaku is more enraged
Lelouch is more distraught
Orange is more composed
And the Prince is obviously a man, instead of maybe a boy.
But the major changes in facial expression are simply because the timing is a few frames off, so character interaction should be the same. And since the general trend is toward more realism and darker color, the result is an overall improvement. Especially when you take the voice acting into account.
THAT's the kind of response I was looking for!
