These are the sales rankings for anime DVDs as compiled by Oricon for the week of Feb. 6 2009. In addition, the much longed for availability of BD sales rankings is slowly arriving, albeit still lacking exact sales numbers and being reported with a significant delay.
It has been some time since we last covered sales rankings of this sort, but as the latest weekly rankings chart is quite similar to those of recent weeks, it does succinctly demonstrate what sort of releases are popular and being purchased on the streets of Japan currently.
- Sales numbers are for the week ending on Feb. 6, 2009
- “LE” signifies Limited Edition
- Some especially long titles have been cropped in length

Clannad After Story continues its strong sales performance, gaining the 1# DVD sales spot by a huge margin with is third release.
Usavich is a title that likely next to none of our readers have heard of – it is a series of animated shorts aired on MTV Japan by studio Kanaban graphics, currently on its 3rd season. It falls outside the normal otaku sphere of influence, similar to how American animated movies often pop up on these lists.
As the top two titles take their respective spots by such significantly wide margins, congratulations to both should be in order, especially Clannad.
Some other points of interest are the Full Metal Alchemist Box Set, which sold nearly 14,000 copies in its first week of release as part of the roll-up to the upcoming new TV series reboot , and My Neighbor Totoro continues its eternal run on the anime sales charts.

Detailed BD sales information is slow in coming, so the positions of individual releases relative to each other in sales and weeks since release are the only numbers we have access to.
The poster child for successful BD releases in Japan, Macross F captures the #1 spot this week. Macross F Vol. 1 was actually the #1 selling BD in 2008 across all categories (not limited to anime), so its excellent performance this year was anything but unexpected.
The titles that keep appearing on the few BD release charts we do get to see tend to be either the big titles whose distributors have decided to give a BD release for (Macross, Code Geass, Gundam), or new BD remasters of older classics (like The Castle of Cagliostro).
The 3 big titles mentioned take up a full one-half of the list here, and currently represent a big chunk of anime’s presence on the BD sales charts, as the anime industry is still in a transitory state moving from DVD to BD as the format of choice.
To give an example, it would not have been at all surprising to see an anime of Index’s significant popularity to have not received a BD release, much like how the extremely popular Strike Witches series is DVD only.
