An extremely skilled organ player, known only as Miko, has put forth her own rendition of Macross Frontier’s 2nd opening theme “Lion”.
Presently the video is enjoying moderate success, currently ranked at number 13 on the NicoNico Daily Rankings with over 80,000 views.

What extraordinary skill.

If you'll notice, she's not actually playing most of the sounds you're hearing. A lot of it is triggered. Her skill lies not in playing three keyboards (which is relatively easy, not to mention she doesn't play anything complex on them anyway) but in setting up the timing in software to switch instruments and add rhythms, etc.
Still sounds good nonetheless.
I somewhat disagree. Indeed it is obvious that she is not playing all of the sounds we hear (e.g percussion) but that doesn't mean it was an easy task (though it depends on what you consider easy).
Playing on 3 claviers is not easy even if you are playing simple melodies. Most people can't even handle two and inexperienced pianists lack completely the ability to use a third clavier with their feet.
The real work though is put on the arrangement. Programming the order of sounds is just merely a nuisance, the hard part is writing it all down and deciding the proper orchestration.
Agreed @ last paragraph. That's also the part at which I still suck. I can accurately reproduce almost everything but I usually lack the creativity to do an original adaption. That's why I have the utmost respect for her (and generally all those who upload MADs of all kinds to Nico, more often than not featuring impressive rearrangements) even if she *occasionally* decided to use different chords...
Unless one also have trained as an organist, I don't think it's fair to judge this as easy/hard/relatively easy or hard. What if it is hard for even skilled pianists, but relatively easy for most organ students?
I'd say enjoy it if you can. Some musicians know too much to enjoy certain things amateurs find great joy in. A big shame that is.
Those peddles down there actually do something you know. The only thing that has its own cue seems to be the drums. the background strings are being played with her feet.
Learn how to spell "pedals" before you try to say obvious things, please.
Homofag.
it did reach a high rank which mean that what she's doing is no ordinary feat or else this should have been brushed off by the viewers
Playing a musical instrument competently is not an ordinary feat.
listen GUY... once u put out a video with u playing "Three Keyboards" better then her i would recommend u to STFU this instance!
Listen here GUY, until u can post a video of u playing "three Keyboards" better then her i insist that u STFU right now, u dumb son of a bitch
wow...the first 5seconds and it was blown off my chair. awesome!
I*
....amazing.MF was my favorite series + nice fig
hooly crap thats good
Wow she is actually playing in 3 claviers (keyboards) a skill mastered by Church (Pipe) Organ players. Quite astonishing, I salute her dexterity.
On another note I am dying from moeness. Her charming legs with kneesocks are EPIC!
cute legs indeed... 絶対領域 FTW!!!!
I approve.
seconded. XD
thirded :-)
Fourthed
"Her charming legs with kneesocks are EPIC!"
Very true
And it takes my all to stop my urge to not ask her do some foot job for me...
slim leg sure is delicious
This is a comment to show my approval of her kneesocks.
She has ugly hands though. <_<
lol tall poppy syndrome. nah i kid ^^
The chords are wrong at 0:56 (Bm7b5, E7#9 should be Bm, Bb as at 0:22 in the real OP vid). Worse, at 1:25, she plays Bm, Em, C, D, B/D#, which kind of ruins the chorus IMO. It should be Bm, C, Am, D, B/D#, as you can hear in the real OP vid starting at 0:47 or so.
WHO CARES... It's good in my ear..
That's why they call it "a transcription" you know... there isn't only one possible/right way to harmonize a melody.
Actually, a "transcription" is supposed to be accurate. Maybe you mean a "rendition" or "cover". But the chords she used are more standard and boring than the ones in the original song, so I wouldn't call it an improvement.
Of course I meant the "arrangement" part of transcription, as in "transcription for organ" (synonym to "arrangement for organ"). I am not a native English speaker and maybe I lack correct English terminology but I don't think the context, which I used the word "transcription" is wrong. Maybe I should have used arrangement to be exact but "rendition" is a word that I am not accustomed to.
Now about the selection of chords; At least in your given examples I don't find (your) original suggestions more complex, but rather just different. I have to note though that I didn't analyze the parts you mentioned (nor do I intend to), it just surprised me that you rushed to discredit the musician's effort because her chord selection, occasionally differs from the original. Again I must stress that it's not that her decision was harmonically wrong - that's the great thing about music.
I'm not trying to discredit the musician's effort. Unlike the rest of you, I don't have "nothing but admiration" for her playing - instead I have "admiration and a slight bit of disappointment". The comments page would be boring as fuck if everyone agreed, now wouldn't it?
My "suggestions" are (as closely as I can represent them) the original chords of the song. The reason I called her chords "more standard and boring" is that she follows a more straightforward descending fifths pattern than the original song, which had slightly more thirds and chromatic movement.
Reimagining the chords would be admirable, but it seems to me like she just didn't hear them properly, or got sloppy and assumed what certain parts would be (due to common usage) instead of listening to the song more carefully.
well if you can do better why dont you then... its already gd enough, also being put onto a website is gd enough too
it doesn't take a chef to know the soup's bad, but in the case of music, he does note some incongruities that do pop up. However, this is a rendition in her version, and I was amazed by her skill. Kudos to "Miko", the anonymous, knee-sock and high-school skirt wearing hero for ssuch a superb rendition!
and also not to mention "shes ranked at number 13 on the NicoNico Daily Rankings with over 80,000 views"
Besides dude, you're wrong yourself. The chords in the original starting from 0:47 are Bm7, Cmaj7, Am7, Dsus4, D#0... >_>
I like her interpretation very much. I'm especially impressed by the arrangement she apparently did all by herself. Also, Zettai Ryouiki = <3
Functionally, minor triads are usually interchangeable with minor sevenths, and major triads with major sevenths. If D#0 is supposed to mean diminished, that's perhaps functionally accurate, but conceptually it's a B7 (realized rootless). The sus4 you're hearing on the D is a passing tone.
Impressive ~_^
You're right, minor triads and minor sevenths are functionally the same, but since the anon (you?) stressed minor sevenths in the sentence before, I had to assume he (you?) would do the same in the next sentence as well (I'll accept that especially mentioning them for the kind of chords she played does make sense, though. Didn't think of it that way). The sus4 is a passing tone in the melody, but that doesn't mean the chord is not a Dsus4 (the strings accompaniment plays the F as well). Yeah, with D#0 I mean D#dim, that's a German/Europe only thing I guess. But since Bach used D#0, that's what I'm gonna use. Also, from what I've been taught (up to now), diminished chords are the only rootless chords there are, so what's the point in pretending it's a "rootlessly" realized B7?
* the strings accompaniment plays the G as well... I wish we had an edit button...
Notice that what I said in my first sentence was a half-diminished seventh (m7b5), not a minor seventh. Half-diminished sevenths are not equivalent to any major triad, and should be written out fully.
Anyway, I wrote down her chords as they are played, and the original's chords as they are conceived. There's a difference between what is played (or even written) and the underlying thread of the progression.
For example, Dsus4 may be the chord you would play on a guitar to accompany the melody, but D is the underlying harmonic structure. A chord is only suspended if it resolves, and this one doesn't (because it's a passing tone to a different chord, i.e. B7 played without the root). So I would refrain from calling it Dsus4.
Diminished sevenths (not triads) and augmented triads are in some sense "naturally rootless" since their inversions are also the root position of other diminished sevenths and augmented triads respectively. However, it's rare that a diminished seventh is used in the harmonic structure of a piece without a root assigned to it. Chromatic chord movement is similarly rare, i.e. D->D#. It makes more sense for the harmony to drop a third and then ascend a fourth, and in truth that's usually what chromatic ascension is - every other note is the third of some nonmanifest chord.
By the way, Bach didn't use D#0, he used D♯°, for what it's worth.
"Notice that what I said in my first sentence was a half-diminished seventh (m7b5), not a minor seventh. Half-diminished sevenths are not equivalent to any major triad, and should be written out fully.

I acknowledged that already... Also sorry for mixing up "minor seventh" as "some chord + minor seventh" instead of "minor triad + seventh". Made me sound like I thought what she played actually was a minor seventh chord (i.e. m7) when I only wanted to say that it's some chord (in this case a half diminished one) + minor seventh. I know, doesn't make much sense since per definition there is no half diminished chord without a minor seventh in it, but English is not the language I'm learning music in, so I sometimes am at a loss of words to express what I want to or I simply mix up terms... But as I already said, I now fully see the point in writing exactly what she plays even when writing just what's conceived for the "correction".
Regarding the sus4 issue, you're right, I forgot about that. It's the reason why it's called "suspended" after all...

Indeed, never noticed that before... I shall remember it and put this knowledge to good use.
Looks like I also have to give in on the B/D# issue, not because "true" chromatic chord movement could not make sense there (I still think it could), but simply because it isn't one (lacks A and C to clearly make the chord diminished). Looking at the accompaniment again (this time thoroughly), it's indeed B with bass moving through the third. Sounds better than D#dim also...
I'll admit I jumped to her defense too hastily and thus made mistakes, but nothing of this stops me from honestly enjoying her performance.
SUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
I almost feel like I'm in a orchestra concert...
Extremely fucking GREAT INCREDIBLE SKILL indeed...
So, is she also a guy?
Why must she be a guy... I'm going to just assume she's crazy hot and of course, female. It's so much easier since I'm never going to see the penis anyway, it's fine for me to just continue imaging/knowing she's a she.
Too hot to be a guy
therefore, a trap.
i couldnt have said it better myself. untill i see her vagina she is man.
man, you musta fell for a few really bad traps before to think like that.
Tissue-hime was pretty hot too. T_T
I'm disappointed by anonymous' one-track mind. :-/
Bad anonymous.
AWESOME...*wipes drool*
ZETTAI RYOUIKI <3
Fantastic. This would make an awesome BGM for... well, about anything with an epic enough scene to justify it.
Damn right. Just as long as nobody wastes it on an OP. Oh shi-
Hey now, let's be fair, I was referring to this version. I liked the OP.
Anyone wanna rip an mp3 version of this?
Already done, I started ripping as soon as I heard it.
Here you go: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OHCXOG96

This sounds great! I've never seen macross frontier but I'm loving this song.
Since Youko the goddess of music Kanno did the score, that's not too surprising ^^
thanks.

Nice legs...
And jesus!! 5min on a hard stepmania song wrecks my forearm, never mind what she's doing.
wow this is so amazing!
This is Awesome!!!
Amazing skills in not only playing 3 keyboards but also the timing
very nice
and from the neck down looks cute
the camera should focus more between her skirt though :D
last pic, has size problems on IE7

People on sankaku still uses IE!? Blasphemy!
IE? in -my- Sankaku?
it is moar likely than you think!
Hey! That's Sheryl Nome!! Look at her skirt! :D
Awesome rendition! Made my heart run like mad! DECULCHAAA!!!
I've never been this in love since Tissue Princess
Now do an article on the electric organ Night of Nights next.
Still, not a bad job, nice one : D
The beat is off, so it's more of a slower calmer version of the real song. Other than that a nice interpretation.
AWESOME i even jacked off to it
Allow me a moment to laugh at you, good sir.
Hahaha.
Please, continue on.
Betcha if she got another arm, she could play it even BETTER!!!
Weird, wouldn't play on here or Nico. Currently downloading. Video stats even show up as 0.
I'm in LOVE!!!
Please don't be a guy!!! LOL XD
I've been rewatching Nodame recently actually. The thought of her getting hit by Chiaki kept running through my mind. Gyabo.
Haha, really i thought the same thing.
She would get hit by Chiaki for sure, there's alot of rush and mistakes in the arrangment.
Awesome music, playing the electric organ requires a lot of skill. I think it is also called the electone, if you check touhou wiki you will find that ZUN composed his music with this instrument.
Go to her list and check out her Mononoke Hime one, it's absolutely amazing.
Indeed this is an amazing rendition. This is why pure mathematical scientists don't make good engineers (referring to anon whom feels the need to dissect her performance). I saw absolutely nothing wrong with the choices she made in how it should sound. Perhaps my lack of perfect pitch could attribute to my belief of it, but even so...as someone else mentioned, if you think it can be done better, then YOU do it better.
wow awesome! one of my favor songs
Finally, someone thats playing an awesome song and its not a guy. Kudos!!
Same song "Lion" however in violin. Originally from Nico someone reposted it at Youtube. Nico version sound alot better. Try tocheck it out.

Edit: this one HQ sound

I see your screamer mask and darth vader, and raise it one khakhi-panted classical piano version of the same song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zERwn-MaiCs&fmt=18
I grabbed my jaw from the floor, as I would translate a saying in Polish. I downloaded this video on my disk (about 30 MB). Never mind musicology and discussions about what lacks in this play. It is normally すごい!
Her body is a masterpiece. Bravo!
did anyone remember url like http://www.nicovideo.jp/xyz/sm-------- to download audio mp3 file from nico ?
yes it's http://nicosound.dip.jp/sound/smnumber
she has forgotten to sing ^.^
http://mediafire.com/?mylnmiztrny
Well, here's a little something out of boredom. Since the her pacing may not suit some people, I decided to speed it up to fairly match Lion's single. The video duration has become 5:04. Don't worry about "chipmunk" effects and etc regarding the audio.
Cheers.
Nice, thanks for the download Sleepy.
thanks
i was thinking about doing the same thing.
this was better since it also has the video
This is amazing!!! I'd like to have those skills too.
I bet she can multitask VERY well.
LOLI ORGAN PLAYER!!!! really hoping she's a loli!!!
Wow. Really great. Sounds like a BGM for a macross RPG or somethin like it.
need a picture of her
Playing On the Organ gives this song an epic touch. Combine it with some cutscene from Final Fantasy "War of th Lion" and u got a new AMV^^
