akikan-fail-5.jpg

The second episode of Akikan has nearly created a new legend of anime failure, so dire has its quality become:

akikan-fail-3.jpg
akikan-fail-4.jpg
akikan-fail-6.jpg

akikan-fail-8.jpg

Observers can’t help but notice that the title is set to go on sale in its DVD version soon, apparently for the price of ¥9,000 for two episodes…

Certainly a contender for a special gallery on the subject. Having not even reached the third episode yet, might not worse be in store?

    • The finger on the left girl,
    • The forearm on the left girl,
    • The uniform detail on the stomach part on the left girl,
    • (I’m nitpicking here but…) the chopstick aren’t the same length,
    • (More nitpicking) the right girl’s neck and head position is a bit off.

    For the fifth one…
    • The boy’s hand’s a bit off… actually I think the shoulder, elbow, and wrist are bent wrongly and
    • The shadowing on the girl’s left breast indicates somewhat of a breast but if you look at the right breast’s outline… it’s flat.

A few frame doesn’t really make it unwatchable but overall the production quality of this anime is terribly terribly low… and they’re charging 9000en for two episode.

Um, what? It’s not as if all Japanese people make a ton of money, you know. A lot of people are average, and the prices are still considered expensive– but it’s pretty much the only price you can get things at, so it’s accepted as normal. There are no Best Buy prices in Japan. Japan is still expensive in terms of electronic goods. It just happens that America is also cheap in terms of electronic goods, in addition to that.

The overall price level in Japan, which in my opinion is usually grossly overstated (it’s a cheap place compared to many developed nations), is different to the price for niche goods.

Anime DVD prices and so forth are based on targeting a relatively small, but dedicated, market. In economic parlance we would say the otaku and anime fans exhibit relatively low “price elasticity” in their demand characteristics.

In short, you can gouge them easily.

    12-01-2009 05:18 # Report

They appear expensive to me as an American due to the episode count per disc and the price tag. Average DVD here for a 26 episode series is 4 episodes for 30 bucks(what is the dollar now 90 yen?). Whereas it’s about 60 bucks for only 2 episodes a disc for a series of that length in Japan. For a longer series like Gundam Wing, the discs were 5 episodes each so 5 bucks an episode. Less discs mean less space taken up on my shelf too. I can’t even fathom how much space my collection would take up if it were Japanese DVD’s.

We also tend to have condensed box sets these days with even fewer discs at lower prices. These come out sometime after all the individual discs get released. Amazon’s got some good deals on new stuff if you look around too. I got the first two seasons of Marimite for 60 bucks there.

But i think Akikan isn’t the only anime that suffered a terribly bad animation quality iirc so far.Not like its the worst in the anime history anyway…

Akikan in general is a good series, although some may say it as somewhat ridiculous or craps or stupid.People may probably appreciate the series more IF only a better studio takes the job to animate the series.Brain Base to me although not that bad (to me they’re actually doing good for series like Natsume Yuujinchou) but i think they’re not really that good for animating this kind of anime genre (supernatural high school harem).

Its kinda sad knowing the sky-earth differences between the animation style and the novel illustration style. Now with all this bad animation quality, the one that suffered will be the series title itself..not the studio that made it.

Oh well, watching for FukuJun. Even if the premise is dumb, the quality of the male lead thus far makes it still yet more enjoyable than the large majority of harem anime ever. Asu no Yoichi’s another case, where the male protagonist completely redeems the harem show, and makes it actually watchable.

Anyhow, 90 bucks for 2 episodes is standard market price in Japan. Just because a season of House or Heroes or whatever is shittier than the rest, doesn’t mean the MSRP’s lower or something (unless it hits bargain bin, which usually never happens for a decade or someshit), etc.

Animation is pretty poor. It’d be nice to get a DVD-TV airing comparison image. I mean, does anyone remember Musashi Gundou? The DVD version of that managed to sell a high number of copies….

    Additionally, lol recession.

Fact check regarding the price point for the first DVD: That’s only for the special Limited Edition of the first volume, which includes a jumbo cushion cover illustrated by Hiro Suzuhira. Those on their own tend to fetch a decent price, so the bundle price isn’t as extreme as it sounds. This is also reminiscent of the first DVD release of Kimiaru, also by Pony Canyon, which included a pillow cover.

    Akikan LE DVD 1:
    http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B001OD5PH0/

The rest of the DVDs (along with the regular edition of the first volume) will retail for the closer-to-market-average price of 4,935 Yen (tax included).

Also the male lead is a typical male pervert, rather than a “OMFG I R A WUSS ROUND GIRLZ” sorta guy. Look at his reaction when the girl first showed up. He was feeling her up just to make sure she was “real”!

They need to pay Korean animators more than two bowls of rice.

Over 9000 bowls of rice and at least 100 bowls of meat.

I don’t get it. The head is turned slightly over 90 degrees (NOT 180 degrees as one commenter says), and most people can turn their heads about 90 degrees. But did anyone notice, the “girl” you’re talking about is actually a can of melon soda, and she’s in the process of materialising what looks like a plasma ball and which is actually magic carbonation power. Does anyone actually know how much a can’s head is supposed to turn in such circumstances?

It’s an anime! People have eyes as big as saucers! They get burned to a crisp and they’re fine just seconds later! They leap gracefully from tall building to tall building, and perch on the top of a giant soda can which flies through the air! When they get emotional they become deformed and are drawn in a simpler than usual, exaggerated style (as in exhibit 1). In extreme cases they can acquire giant heads and tiny bodies, and single giant sweatdrops and huge pulsing veins in their foreheads. These are not horrible flaws – they’re what makes it an anime.

There’s nothing missing from the tie. The guy’s just unbuttoned his shirt to show of his chest, and further loosened a tie that was already so loose it was dangling from his neck by threads so narrow as to be almost invisible. The odd bends in some of the arms are known as elbows. Most people have them, and if you check carefully you may even find that you have some yourself. I’ll admit one chopstick is shorter than the other for a frame or two, but that’s what happens when you use cheap disposable chopsticks that break easily. It’s the school canteen’s fault, not the animator’s :-).

For the rest, I just can’t see what people are talking about. The mention a melon. There’s a can of melon soda that features prominently in the plot, I can see that even though no-one else does, but where’s the melon?

I think you’re mistaking anime ‘breaches of reality’ with plain fail.

Also, her head is turned at least 120°, and her chin is fully on the other side of her shoulder. Necks do not work that way.

There’s tremendous variations in flexibility, so don’t judge what is possible just based on your own capabilities. An untrained person might be only able to twist his neck 28 degrees, whereas the very same person, after athletic training, can twist it ninety degrees – see http://www.somaxsports.com/Rigas.htm

If in addition to twisting your neck 90 degrees you also thrust a shoulder forwards (which you would do if you were about to throw something) your chin would certainly pass beyond your shoulder. Also, during a dynamic move the body can be more flexed than is possible in a static pose.

But, she’s a can, a point which you didn’t address. Last time I checked, cans couldn’t twist their necks at all. So, maybe you have something.

What’s up with the other pictures? The second one, for instance? I can see what people will imagine is the fault with it. An amorphous blob of a torso. Four arms instead of two. But anyone who has watched the episode will know that the girl has been given a second jacket because she’s trapped in a cold room, and unlike the other characters she feels the cold. Maybe there’s some flaw in the face, which I’m missing, but if so it could have been demonstrated using *any* other picture of the same girl. Why use that particular picture, unless the purpose is to mislead those who haven’t yet seen the video?

The highest budget films ever, things like Titanic and the original Star Wars, are wall to wall fail if you believe the lists of bloopers that are floating around. Cameras reflected in windows, late 20th century wristwatches on extras, star troopers shaking the scenery when they bang their heads on low doors, etc, etc, etc. Do you really expect an anime, one of many churned out on a conveyor belt for a relatively small audience, to surpass the production quality of the greatest ever worldwide blockbusters?

OK, some anime have great attention paid to detail, e.g. Kamichu has impressive scenery, but that is because the scenery is an important element in the success or failure of that anime. Akikan is all about innuendo and double entendre, or even single entendre. The sexual references don’t get any less steamy just because one chopstick is momentarily shorter than another.

    DON’T LISTEN TO THIS RETARD!
One time I was hanging out with some friends and I told this really funny joke, but no one laughed and one guy hit me because one of my chopsticks was shorter than the other. Then I twisted my body in an abnormal position for 1/10 of a second and there was much drama.

Just ’cause some people can’t put their chin over their shoulder, nobody can? Not even fictional characters? Hold on, let me try… HOLY CRAP I CAN!! Oh wait, I’m double-jointed, effectively making me an alien and defunct from voicing my opinion. Carry on.

No, see, the point is that the animators made just ONE mistake in an anime, the most sacred of all forms of reality-escaping entertainment. BLASPHEMY!!!1
