The Vipper responsible for the notorious cosplay event reports centred on Tsukicon and Connichi has one more report to share with us, whether we like it or not; this time the event in question is the 2008 AniMaCo, which is cryptically described as “Die Anime und Manga Convention in Berlin”:

Less Naruto, as well as more passable cosplay, and perhaps even some good cosplay too, tend to place this above the Finnish event. Not surprising given the larger population on offer, perhaps.

I will refrain from other comparisons out of repect for the participants, but it must be remembered that even in Japan or elsewhere, the majority of such cosplay is lacking in comparison to the sort of thing generally regarded as win, height not withstanding.

In case you were you victimised by this Vipper’s apparent insistence on using a five-year-old mobile phone to take his pictures, along with his near complete absence of photographic skill, you can have your revenge, or perhaps successfully hunt him, with this picture of himself he offers:

    Well I was honestly fooled by the first two images, to which I then began to shove my fingers down my throat.

    But then again, the white bikini clad monster killed me on the inside and has set a new level of ‘MY EYES, THEY BURN!!11!!!!1′.

    After the rant I gave to the Finnish fail, I’m pretty empty on the hate-filled bile I usually have for failed cosplay, so I’ll try to focus on the good points, as, after all, it’s better than Finland.

    The expressions of many of the cosplayers still need to be dragged from that “Hey look a camera!” set of wide eyes and fake, uncalled for smiles, but I’ve just about given up on that, as it seems only the cosplayers at Comiket seem to understand that the cameraman doesn’t want to see you, he wants to see the character you’re cosplaying, and they certainly wouldn’t smile like they haven’t had their picture taken already a billion times.

    It’s good to see more variety, but the quality of the costumes is dodgy, ranging from god awful, to cheap and gaudy, to pretty good, to pretty excellent, but nowhere near said Comiket cosplay Gods and Goddesses, although like the facial expressions, I’ve pretty much come to accept that too.

    Hm, I guess that’s really it, I still say people need to understand that certain people should not cosplay certain characters, but now I’m just being overly critical and nit-picky. However I do think everyone should try to put the most effort they can in trying to do the best cosplay possible, if everyone did that then cosplay could ascend into being an art form or in the eyes of the media in some countries, a respectable culture, instead of just a prolonged Halloween.

    Note that while I say everyone should put as much effort into making the cosplay look good, I still admire the man who can cosplay a female character, simply because of their love of the character.

    It’s a double-sided argument. I understand cosplay is a fun thing to do and people just want to enjoy themselves, and perhaps it’s just my extremist otaku insider voice that has all the bitching to do, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t completely understand where the Nagi-sama enthusiasts who got pissed off when they found out that she might be second-hand, were coming from when they voiced their outrage.

    I dunno, Germany does cosplay better than Finland, and I’m an extremily critical and ornery son-of-a-bitch.

    I don’t like the idea of cosplay. Why spend all that time and money to pretend you’re someone cool when you could be spending that time and money on actually being a cool person instead?

    Convention Cosplay is bad most times.
    Surfing on NicoNico i found really good “foreign” Cosplay which surprised me. Before I thought for excellent cosplay you need to be somewhat asian looking. But see for yourself (a little help if you cant type in japanese signs, 海外コスプレ)!

    The funny thing is, i read many comments from japanese users saying foreigners might even have better cosplayers while i thought japanese are better in Cosplay. I think its becuase you are more used to the faces and able to see small flaws, which someone with another ethnic background wouldnt notice.

    this guy needs to learn how to take pictures.

    and forgive Germany and Finland for not having a conveniently placed Cosplay Factory Shop within their country.

    on another note. Germans sure are tall and long faced. that is interesting.

    @Kageryu
    these few pictures do not represent cosplay for one country alone.

    people pick out Cosplay pictures done by models from Japan, and the automatic thought is “Japanese are good at cosplay kawaii!”
    while (like all over the world) there are many trial and errors when it comes to this hobby.

    @Shimu
    if that was the way of thinking for everyone, then people wouldn’t cosplay at all.

    And I thought the cosplays around here were so-so, but after seeing the two posts about the cosplays I’ve to say people here are very good compared.

    Also, the major difference is that in Asia most (I would say around 80~90%) are woman and they cos/crossplay without a problem. And every where else, guys usually cosplay guys and girls mainly cosplay girls.

    Such a cute troll! *gives a cookie*

    Now, regarding those cosplays (or attempts at cosplaying), some of the costumes look good, but their poses or expressions just don’t combine at all, but at least they look some what like the characters. As for the rest, I will just say that they could be even worse. Like a Portuguese guy that “cosplayed” as Larva (from Vampire Princess Miyu) with just a white sheet covering part of his body. He even gave the bullshit that he was cosplaying that character for the first time on the entire world. The Portuguese anime “community” never fails to amuse me.
