To set the record straight, the qipao is actually Manchurian in origin, with a short history of 300 years. It evolved into the tight fitting shape during the 1920s in Shanghai, but now has a slutty image with anime depictions.
The genuine 'china' dress is called the Hanfu, which is more elegant and classical.

i agree with you there Jade... wit the cheongsam it really depends on what the character is wearing it or for whomever is wearing it on slight mistake can turn the dress from a great and sexy dress to something revolting and especially on some ages it can be alluring on some

cheongsam is definitely the best and most sexiest dress in the world...
and its perfectly okay to wear it without have to extensively expose your panty or boobs to make it look sexy (unlike miniskirt, tanktop, etc)

its alluring, and every body curve can be seen clearly
(different that Yukata/Kimono..which i feel, it require certain extend of body pose to make those skin visible under such garments, anything else...your double D boobs will turn into B-C range, which clearly reduce its charms)

downside: slight body fat will turn your custom-made cheongsam into something unwearable, Kimono and Yukata doesnt have those kind of problem though XD

The yukata makes a fair enough run at equalling the China dress.

But I don't think the question of which is better really needs determining. Both can obviously be enjoyed in tandem, which is clearly the best way to go about it.

I think the allure for China dresses is first, how well they accentuate even slight curves (no doubt advantageous for the native wearers of the fashion), and at least in anime-manga media, how it emphasizes the leg and thighs, without necessarily going to panty-shot immodesty (though that happens a lot).

With kimonos and yukatas in particular, I think the allure is more how it's simultaneously modest and immodest. *Most* of them are fairly modest, in so far that they don't accentuate or emphasis curvature (unless the person is so "curvy" that it can no longer be helped), while at the same time they are obviously very easy to take apart, lacking very much that's solid keeping it together.

There is however, a similar emphasis on the legs, but usually not as much one as the china dress.
