Mass media trend watching site Nikkei BP Trendy recently engaged in a spot of schoolgirl thigh and skirt photography, sure to put even the hardened voyeurs of 2ch to shame, and the data gathered may be of interest.
Ostensibly the report examines the purported trend towards longer skirts, as it has been said that very short skirts have come to be seen as “crude”, using some fieldwork in Shibuya to gather data.
Most of this extensive data was in fact photographic in character (see below).
The research’s findings were strung out into 11 pages, so the condensed version may be more appropriate:
Hemlines are not lowering, though seasonal variations are apparent. Nobody questioned had even heard of girls opting for more modest lengths.
The uniform skirts are generally fairly long, so they must be adjusted; the chief method seems to be “rotation”, or rolling up the skirt with a belt, which is all concealed under the top, and offers the convenience of being able to pass any uniform inspections, or be able to be adjusted to and from school.
Another method is simply to adjust the skirt’s length by cutting. The young lady in the first picture used this method in conjuction with two rolls.
We also hear that none of those questioned (some 20 girls) wore mini-skirts when given free choice out of school, instead opting for shorts and trousers.
Also, only a few still wore loose socks, which by now are entirely out of fashion.
Another finding is that many short skirt wearers are entirely unafraid of peeking, as they wear “konpan”, that is, kon (navy blue) coloured pantsu, actually short spatsu (leggings).
It should be noted that the researcher responsible for this outstanding journalism was a lady, which may explain the brazen nature of the shots and her having the temerity to approach her research subjects, even being granted access to their very thighs.
Were she a male, doutless she would be gracing the pages of Itai News by now…
The research data itself is extensive:
You may wish to continue your research into this fascinating trend with some of our own schoolgirl research pieces conducted in conjunction with the Vippers and 2ch: the observation gallery, the thigh gallery, the tights gallery, and, of course, the skirt failure gallery.

Where are the conservatives? Or maybe this only true in Urban sides of Japan? I wish we have that here…
Loose socks out of fashion?!
BIG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I’ll help you with that.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
UHHH YESSSS loose socks have been out of fashion since late 90s there are some that still wear them but those are the type of girls that wear gaudy clothing and excessive makeup. But as far as school uniforms go navy blue or white knee socks are the norm
Aw, man! There goes the era of Great Teacher Onizuka schoolgirls!
Fascinating
Intriguing research. Seifuku = SRS BSNS, I suppose? :P
Rolling it up using a belt… brilliant!
it’s just that, isn’t they cold?
with their leg showing like that…
I think they wear them a little longer during cold weather and uniform inspections, plus heavy weight stockings also helps. what is not answered is why? why do they do this?
Because it’s cold?
One answered just this question posed by the interviewer; she said she had to keep the cold off her thighs so they did not become thick (not just look thick) – the school doctor seemingly told her this would happen in response to the cold….
Females have better natural defense against the cold, and/or fashion is more important to them than physical comfort (what else could explain womens’ continued use of high-heeled shoes?).
I went to grade school in America when mini-skirts were popular (the first time :). We were waiting at the bus stop on a icy winter morn, I was wearing jeans, shivering, and looking in amazement at the mini-skirted girls, who were _not_ shivering.
I asked, “Aren’t you cold?”, and the universal reply was, “No.”
They probably were wearing nylon stockings, but still….
Oh, I roll up my pleated skirts all the time to shorten them (they’re too long and drabby to start with anyways)… Kudos to the girls. I wear cotton tights and a petticoat (and sometimes even a pair of cotton/wool thigh-high socks on top of the tights) under the skirt to combat the coming cold seasons. It works wonders for temperatures to about freezing.
This is a very interesting research indeed and kudos to those girls. Rolling up the skirt and using a belt is brilliant!!!
and then they wonder why boys are so perverted. They are making us became like this!
In Japan, when outside of school, many girls wear their skirts high to show off their legs. Even if it’s snowing. In school they wear their skirts as normal, usually covering the knees.
Many also prefer to wear their more comfortable “jerseys” rather than their school uniforms outside of school.
Damn Japs girls are ugly!!! I mean, ANY girl in my neighborhood looks prettier than those gals. No wonder why Japs dudes want to marry 2D girls!
I agree in the context of pic 26, but what’s wrong with the other ones? Have you even seen one of the great (3D) galleries here?
In japan you’re also considered “rebelling” if you wear your skirt long.
Kinda sad being a fat girl in Japan. Cause whether you have nice legs or not, you gotta show them off.
Why all the pork dress in high school uniform?
Because it’s _mandatory_ uniform?
For males doing this kind of research there is all ways the old right angle lens trick.

i would like to help the research.
first off measurements should be measured from the inside of the leg up to the crotch so we will probably have to get correct measurements
The first girl knew what she was doing, but a lot of the other’s skirts just look silly. They can dress how they want to, but it doesn’t always look right to just roll up your skirt.
hahaha I saw Shrek!
The no.10 pic, the girl there is “BOW-LEGGED”
