Otaku Demand Right to Wed 2D Characters - SOS-dan Brides Nagato, Haruhi and Mikuru

Otaku have petitioned the government for the right to marry 2D characters.

The online petition in question:

“We’ve no interest in the 3D. If we could, we’d like to live in a 2D world. However, with current technology, this is not possible. So at the very least, can we have marriage to 2D characters legally recognised? If this were to come to pass, I intend to marry Asahina Mikuru.”

The most interesting comment we see in response is this:

“I’ve been married to Arcueid of Tsukihime for five years now. I’ve no doubt that I want to spend the rest of my life with her. As someone who lives in two dimensions, I’d very much like to support this measure!”

Via Gigazine.

Currently the measure has 530 supporters, with a million seemingly being the target for it to be presented to the diet, should they tear themselves away from trying to ban 2D characters for long enough to hear it.

No marriage unless Mikuru actually signs the license and says "I do," of her own free will, not some Adobe Premiere splicing.

You ppl really need to get out of your little fantasy's your living in an get out of your computer's and meet WOMEN!!!!! Alex: Saying get a life should be reserved for those who aren't anime fans. Frankly, if you have the time to be writing get a life to use, you yourself should get a life. Also, as a brat/retard, learn how to write, so that you don't have to publicly embarrass yourself. I mean, the comment feature even incorporates spell check for you, you have to be a real retard to ignore it.

Now, claiming her to be her wife might violate the copyright and other stuffs. Not to mention that there are tons of otakus that want to marry her :D

I don't think you can marry 2d (read: Fictional) characters because they aren't legally real people and therefore they cannot have their name a marriage license nor can they actually sign it or agree or disagree to the whole thing...

On the other hand, I'd love to see an Otaku wedding where the groom waits patiently at the altar while his only other friend carries a body-pillow with a picture of his 'bride' on it.

I'd like to disagree on your first statement. Let's say the copyright holder is her father, and he has all rights to her opinions (which he can), then it's possible for him to give the okay and maybe sign the agreement in her place.

A very specific situation, but still, you can't technically marry what does not exist. Identities and copyrights are very different. A Copyright does not imply that the protected material is considered a legal entity (one that has rights and such) it just simply means that the copyright holder is the person who owns that intellectual property.

These guys are pleading to marry ideas, essentially and even though there would be no benefit to doing so, there's no way it could work.

Surely this is more like a form of 2D Enslavement to fufill their lustful desires. They just want to be able to brag about it on forums and fellow otakus, that they're married to INSERT NAME HERE. it's really retarded really, to want marry 2D chara

i myself fall in love with 2D chara and not really interested with real girl but i have not the slightest intention to claim or marry 2D chara
saying so and even thinking so would be very well defying everything i believe in

those type of retard that want to marry 2D would only could reach level of an nijikon, one who love 2D girl and want them as their girlfriend and wife
to put it simply their love is like a man to a woman

i myself even more retarded than them, i don't want to have a 2D chara girlfriend or wanna have girlfriend like them
the only thing i wish is seeing them(2D chara) happy, and the happiest thing a girl could have is be with the one they love, not me, not them but the chara they fall in love with in the story
wanting them to be mine, even if that possible won't bring them their biggest happiness
so doing so would be really contradicting myself
my love is a greater love that transcend gender relationship and dimension
to put it simply my love for them is like a father to their child
i demand nothing back from them, i only want to see them smile and happy with the one they love

so as is said, wanna marry 2D girl is retarded
but my wish is even more retarded :D

I'll hunt them down if they marry my favourite characters. Like others said this does give anime enjoyers a bad name, but hey there's nutjobs everywhere. A few times there were men marrying dolls because they either believed their deceased wife was reincarnated in her, or that their future/past-life wives were in there. Figurine marriage is already possible it seems, but how does one pull this off to begin with?

Being an otaku isnt exclusive to anime either. If you read a lot of books, you can be considered a book otaku, so calling otakus "retards" is pretty much calling everyone who has a hobby a retard.

And what about someone who CAN meet real girls, but just prefers anime girls? I see that more like a personal preference than a creepy obsession.

This wouldn't work unless the copyright holder agreed to create an avatar/character for the husband, and even then, it would have to be something that the wife character would be interested in romantically... or, they could make the character exactly like the real life person, and then the copyright holder can create a story, deciding what happens. But I don't believe in inter-dimensional relationships. The real life person doesn't exist in the character's universe, and vice versa. Hm, that gives me another idea. The copyright holder could choose an actor to cosplay the character, and act exactly like it at all times, and the copyright holder can declare this person the official 3d representation of the character, but this is less feasible than the first idea. But most likely, the copyright holder would not agree to either of the 2 options in the first place.

Well...gotta say, this is a surprise.

If I were to speak positively on the matter, I'dsay that for one thing, it frees Mikuru from the torment she regularly gets from Haruhi. Secondly, I'd probably pick Kula Diamond or Big Boss if I was homosexual.

But I'm not exactly fully supportive of this. For one thing, his mental health is in question. He's gonna die alone, and his wife will do nothing to help. A sad thing, eh?

Course, this isn't the first time Japanhas taken anime seriously. Remember that big funeral they had for Raoh from Fist of the North Star?

Surely the only way for it to be consensual would be for the author of the manga to actually write him into the story - I presume there'd be teary eyes and tender confessions all round. The guy would probably have to be consulted so he could be accurately depicted in the manga (but is that a good idea?). Then he could dictate to the author about the sweet life he wants to share with his new wife. I imagine the author would charge a premium for this service...
It opens up a pretty disturbing idea - authors creating manga about yourself on demand, and a fantasy life created just for you :)

By the same logic it should be possible to marry 2d characters, not that either idea makes any sense without AIs to replicate their personalities. You know, I would support this except one thing keeps bothering me. The character has no say in the matter, and as much as we love to fantasize, they'd have no idea they were married to you. Plus, even if this were to pass, how many people would try to marry the same toon?

Therefore, the obvious solution is a televised mega death match between all otaku for the hand of the maiden. I'd watch a bunch of geeks fight to the death. That sounds like good tv. They get what they want, and i get a few days of dead people per anime character.

Make it legal but, seeing as marriage requires the consent of 2 agreeing peoples, argue that although legal, a 2d character cannot talk for itself, or act out an answer, and so cannot consent to the marriage.
